Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

Ah. Thank you kindly.

I guess that given the time of day and the limited options people will listen. No doubt it will 'bed in' but doesn't alter the fact that they've ruined a perfectly good show and replaced it with a mediocre (at best) one.

Agreed. It is still a significant and unnecessary downgrade on the old show, but it isn't THAT bad.

I really don't listen anymore but I don't know if that's registered anywhere.

It's a shame as I found the previous show really comfy listening.
I wonder if it was too unfashionable before to full of listeners like me? This way Jo brings some coolness, more promotion for new music/artists & more trendy guests? Less books/cooking (geeky?!!)
It's wasted on me I'm very uncool & untrendy I liked the books & cooking. I listen to local radio which is tolerable in small bursts or silence.

Just listening to the new Simon Mayo's Books of The Year podcast. If you enjoyed the old book club on R2 and miss Matt then you really should listen. The chemistry between them is just like it used to be. It sounds a bit underproduced and the sound quality is a tiny bit 'off', but it is great to have them back together and I am sure they will iron out any slight issues.

I still find it to be a good show! I think because a) I like Jo Whiley and b) I only dip in and out of the show while cooking and ferrying children to various activities. I can't really notice any difference Blushstill good music, still confession and still Friday request show....

CAN'T NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE!!!!!! Slippermaiden - what are you on about?

I am going to have to go and lie down, what on earth do you mean, you can't notice any difference, did you actually listen to Drivetime???

Now listening to the Mayo Book of the Year - at least it's something but BRING BACK DRIVETIME AND ADMIT YOU WERE WRONG BBC.

Bridget yes I did listen to drivetime, but as I said only as background while cooking etc! 😂 its all about the music for me, so I prefer it now as music wasn't always so good and I didn't like the cooking bit. However I do listen to radio one in the mornings and my favourite DJ is Nick Grimshaw, so might be in a different wavelength to you, if you'll excuse the pun. I really love the Indie disco on Saturday nights in Absolute.

Some people will like it. Maybe if there hadn't been such a good Drivetime I wouldn't think about it, though I certainly wouldn't choose to tune in as it's still (caught it last night) droney.

JW is trying to lighten up, but it's just not her bag and her voice doesn't suit the slot. There isn't the easy chemistry between her and SM that there was with SM and the team. Miss Matt's voice and humour. I wasn't bothered about the cooking but it was easy to listen to. JW is still quite 'me, me, me' with everything having a JW experience referenced. Not interested in it. If they're going to have callers then it's about the callers, not the presenters.

BBC has made a mistake. It won't admit it. It won't make a change. And it's extremely galling that they can spend public money and not be accountable to the public.

I've listened for half an hour today and not heard any of Jo... Hurrah! Is she off sick? Not that I wish her to be ill, but it's so much better without her! Grin

I heard a bit and it was mainly SM with a bit of JW. She seems to be trying so hard to lighten up, but it comes over as just not her bag. I actually miss her evening show. Why the heck did they have to wreck two perfectly fine shows.

I have to admit I completely lost the plot last night and emailed a less than coherent moan to the BBC complaints dept. It was awful (fuelled in part by JW simpering to Emily Eavis there being no Glastonbury this year - Isle of Wight Festival was on instead). She's just not right for the slot and, frankly, it's boring. I could rant on this subject all night. Needless to say, I lost the plot, emailed the BBC and turned the station over. I'm not listening to that again! When I'm driving home, cooking the fucking dinner and doing all the drudge work in 30 degree heat I just need Simon and Matt making me (and the kids and DH when he's around) laugh.

I haven't listened to Drivetime for weeks now. I genuinely miss Simon, Matt and Bobbie Sad

With Graham Norton being off for ever the summer I decided to retune all my radios to 4 for the foreseeable ... then they tell me Eddie Mair's leaving

I so miss the original show. What is the BBC thinking of? Obviously not us listeners.

I have corrected myself about the title and getting my facts wrong. But how times change. Back when she was announced on the show, the vitriol from mn was awful.

I really loved 'Drivetime' - I mean REALLY!! I loved the homework, the people making legendary journey's on a Friday night, I loved Foodie Thursday - all of the components of the show blended - I always looked to Simon's book club when I needed a bit of inspiration. The kids and the people who came on to chat about their great week's - some were positively stars in their own right! Then 'they' ruined it!!! 100% On the odd occasion that I was out in the car after 7pm I was grateful that I didn't have to do that every night!! Talked down to by the Queen of Music - "If I haven't played it it's not worth listening to"

  • "You should check it out" FFS F OFF! Now we have lost our show, and no amount of Simon telling us it was all the other work that has taken him away will not convince me that it was because we all turned over to F**ing Magic or Heart rather than listen to Jo Whiley trying to do what Simon does. She can't, and she never will.

But - thank you Simon, for all the wonderful years, the brilliant interviews and confessions - and all that you fitted into YOUR show - we truly loved it!

I totally hear your "queen of music" thing. So bloody patronising and annoying. She just loves music more than us mere mortals can understand. Ugh. So tedious. And it was just excruciating to hear her trying to get enthusiastic for uncool drive time stuff. It wasn't pleasant for any of us - listener and presenter alike.

Smidge001 · 22/10/2018 21:27

She killed the show. I'm glad they've realised it wasn't working. But still annoyed they were so arrogant as to ignore all the feedback that was given.

Maybe Simon and Co can bring it back somewhere else. In the meantime I shall be downloading Simon podcasts and buying his books I think, to help show it wasn't him.

Smidge001 - thank you for the Podcast - I used to have them coming into my phone, I will now get them downloaded and enjoy all the good perfect and decent shows that used to make my journey home much more bearable!

Great news! Simon is coming back to drive time on something called Greatest Hits radio. 4-7 on weekdays.
