To hate Jo Wiley

Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

That’s what I thought. He barely gets a word in edgeways.

Pinga · 31/05/2018 00:33

Turned R2 on at tea time. 20 seconds of Jo Wiley. Turned R2 off.

I need to find something else to fill that teatime kitchen space.

Pinga · 31/05/2018 00:34

It will be v interesting to know how audience numbers have been affected by this change.

TossDaily · 31/05/2018 08:38

Simon sounds so sulky and pissed off that every time I listen I'm doing a full body cringe.

Not that I blame him.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 31/05/2018 08:51

It used to sound effortless, very low key, not like "a concept". I always listened to it when cooking, it kept me company.

DH hates radio 2, but was always around for the confessions.

It is funny how confessions now lost its spark.

Jo Wiley is all about sucking up to celebs, and name dropping ("that time when I hung out with Noel Gallagher and had hiccups" that sort of thing. Are we meant to be impressed?)

wowfudge · 31/05/2018 10:06

I've been listening to Simon Mayo since Moses was a boy and he has always worked well with a team - thinking back to his Radio 1 breakfast show days. There's something wrong with this partnership and I think it's Jo. Nothing against her personally.

Bob Shennan has fundamentally misunderstood what his customers want in this slot.

Bloke1 · 31/05/2018 10:52

Not happy about the lack of care here. No need for personal attacks on Jo or Simon. That surely should not be the purpose of this forum. Obviously two very decent people doing a job they love and doing their best. The drivetime show was highly superior entertainment. Jo's show was good also. However, the new show just isnt working. I think all involved have realised that but corporate obedience does not allow them to say, but if Jo and Simon read this, they will be nodding. I miss Matt and the energy and humour of the "old" drivetime show. Radio is my saviour, but I'm going to switch to Richard Allinson now (the best presenter who the BBC would never give a full time slot). ps. Mark Goodier has recovered. He should be back on Radio 2. So much talent not being used. Thank you and goodnight!

Fontella · 31/05/2018 13:24

If people don't like a presenter they have a perfect right to say so on a free, open forum. Some posters don't like Jo Whiley - and there's nothing wrong with that.

I can't stand Chris Evans. I haven't listened to the Breakfast Show for years because of him. I think he's a shouty, immature prick personally - that's my opinion. It's not your job to police the forum, my comments or anyone else's.

One thing I do agree with you on is Richard Allinson. Why on earth Radio 2 never made better use of him I shall never know. Excellent presenter, great voice for radio and always gets that right balance of music appreciation, chat and humour.

DuchessofSuccess · 31/05/2018 13:33

Have any of you considered that Jo Wiley a MNer! Why do people do this? Hatred is such a strong feeling to apply to someone who has not harmed you personally.

iklboo · 31/05/2018 13:44

The thing that gets me is that they are not a double act. It really feels as though she is ungenerous in terms of the mike time she lets Simon have.

Agree with this. She spoke over him loads during the John Torode interview. At one point Simon was about to ask a question and she just over rode him to blurt about her daughter being a food stylist and really liking food - something like:

Simon: Can I just ask about that time....

Jo: No, you see my daughter is a food stylist and she's soooo into food and I'm, like, not and it's really funny (blah blah blah)

JT: ah, ha ha

Simon

It wasn't even relative to the point. Even DH is getting annoyed with her.

Bloke1 · 31/05/2018 16:14

It's wrong to get into character assassination about anyone. It is OK to say that u may think a presenter is not as good as another but that is not the same as "hate". Hate should be reserved for those who want to do us terrible harm.

SandlakeRd · 31/05/2018 16:19

Interesting Simon has started a book club type podcast and he has tweeted to say Matt will be on it! I don’t think he will be long for that show. So sad as he is so good on the radio. Hopefully his movie show with Mark Kermode will carry on.

The BBC have made a big big mistake but will be too corporate to admit it.

sweetboykit · 31/05/2018 18:52

I'm finding it really difficult to have a new routine at the time I cook tea and do lunches for tomorrow. I found the Simon Mayo et al really took the edge off my stress level. I'm autistic so I find change difficult. Jo won't let Simon get a word in edgewise, she is too self absorbed, boring and I don't like her for changing something I liked. So no, it's not too much to say I hate her because I do, and I'd tell her to her face and why.
Just because you don't think 'hate' is a worthy term doesn't mean you should try to censor me.

CanIBuffalo · 31/05/2018 18:56

I can't listen to the show any more. So cringe making and amateurish.

AmIthatbloodycold · 31/05/2018 19:00

I've just heard her say that Ross noble would be the best co-host ever. Then oops and giggle

I hate her

Don't tell me how to feel Bloke. Hmm

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 31/05/2018 19:02

Is anyone still listening or enjoying?

I just have silence now at drivetime

MrsMozart · 31/05/2018 19:04

Well according to the FB page there's nobody in favour of the new show.

I've complained again (Radio 2 complaints page), more out of idle curiosity as to what soundbite they'll come back with.

lemonsunshinecake · 31/05/2018 19:18

Radio 2 is all shite.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 31/05/2018 19:18

We got a referendum on Brexit... but they could change Drivetime without so much as a consultation?!

wowfudge · 31/05/2018 20:41

They're sure as hell getting feedback though!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/05/2018 20:51

The confessions podcast used to be the highlight of my week. It really doesn’t work at all with Jo instead of Matt.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 31/05/2018 21:11

It says in the DM article that they’d both expressed concerns beforehand. Sounds like they didn’t want to change it either.

Gooseysgirl · 31/05/2018 21:45

Haven't read the full thread but I think the new show is diabolical... there is zero presenting chemistry between them! I wasn't a huge fan of Mayo on his own either but jaysus it was better than the current format.

MrsMozart · 31/05/2018 21:53

I got a response... The same one as they sent out last time HmmConfused

Slartybartfast · 01/06/2018 07:19

Sara Cox is on good form this morning.
How does she do it?
