To hate Jo Wiley

Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

It’s such a shame. I thought JW was really suited to her previous slot. I enjoyed listening if I was in the car picking DS up or something. Her voice and style lends itself to that time I felt.

They’ve gotten rid of so much of the stuff that families liked.

Simon posted on Twitter and most of the comments on his post were complaints.

What were they thinking???

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 15/05/2018 19:06

Sara Cox would have been a better fit, imo, but it's early days.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 19:07

Sara Cox is ideal for a daytime slot imo - she's so upbeat.

libertywoo · 15/05/2018 19:16

I’m gutted Matt has left, used to love it when he said, “ oh hello” during confessions. Simon was fine by himself, no need for Jo to join at all. But at least it’s not the awful Liza Tarbuck or Sara Cox joining him.
Steve silly boy love the show needs to go pronto, unfunny and causes feelings of rage when I hear his show. I love Ken but really miss Lynne, they were great together

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 15/05/2018 19:27

Yes there are so many better, upbeat, chatty female presenters. Sara Cox, Liza, Zoe!
I want someone I feel familiar and relaxed to hear.

I’ve complained

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 15/05/2018 19:29

I stopped listening to ken as sometjing had changed and it wasn’t the same! I’ve just realised it’s because Lynne wasn’t there!

Whitney168 · 15/05/2018 19:30

This is absolutely her show and those who are predicting that he will leave soon are probably right.

I suspect you're right - couldn't put a woman in a prime slot, so do it by stealth ...

Pomegranatepompom · 15/05/2018 19:35

I'll be listening to whatever station he moves to. Really poor decision by R2

cardibach · 15/05/2018 19:53

I absolutely can’t stand Sara Cox with her babyish voice and stupid try hard features when she used to cover breakfast (Strictly Mum Dancing anyone?) but I’d support her taking over from Steve Wright as he’s even worse and I’m used to avoiding that show anyway.
Loved Drivetime. Simon Mayo is a really good interviewer - he actually listens to answers and responds to them - and he’s funny. How will I chose something light but reasonably written to read without Bookclub?

TSSDNCOP · 15/05/2018 19:55

It's nearly 8pm is she still wittering on or am I reliving the misery?

The could absolutely have put a woman in the slot, but it would have meant sacking Mayo who was doing a great job.

Sara Cox or Zoe Ball could and do already hold the prime slots when Chris and Ken are out. Jo doesn't ever do cover, and now we see with bloody good reason.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 19:56

Matt is a huge loss; he had such a distinct personality that came over on radio brilliantly. I loved it when he used to have those rants about stupid things. And that laugh! I wonder where he is now?

Midthreademergencynamechange · 15/05/2018 19:58

I don't like Jo Wiley but Drivetime was tired and repetitive. Simon Mayo sounded positively bored most of the time. I'm so appalled that he was paid £400,000 pa for that! 90% of the show was recycled and the truly awful "All Request Friday" that spilled into other days of the week ... just no words.

Spotsandstars · 15/05/2018 19:59

The pivotal moment when I realised I'd got old = when Radio 1 kicked off Chris Moyles (and then Scott Mills) and replaced with the younger idiots. Haven't listened to Radio 1 since.

TheClitterati · 15/05/2018 20:02

I stopped listening to Drivetime about 5 years ago because it was so bloody monotonous. Same thing every single night for years and years and years.

Might tune in again if they change the format.

Smidge001 · 15/05/2018 20:07

I knew I wasnt going to like it. But I listened tonight and it was godammed awful. II shouted at the radio several times really pissed off because Jo wouldn't let Simon speak. She kept talking over him! Silly cow. I didn't mind her in the evening slot but now she just really pisses me off. Did you hear when she took over (for the umpteenth time) then had the audacity to say "shall I let you do that bit" to him, letting him read out the email address or something. Gah! So bloody angry. It's rubbish and it used to be so good. What a complete disaster. I hope Simon doesn't get bitter. He already sounds so down about it.

BinkyBuntyFintyCunty · 15/05/2018 20:08

Steve Wright needs to go. His ‘talent’ is literally reading everything he says from a piece of paper or screen in front of him. Badly. And usually with the wrong intonation. All with that stupid lisp. And how he has the gall to do a piss take-y Tony Blackburn DJ voice impression when talking about him. Pot. Kettle. Black. The irony.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 20:10

Well like with anything there’s bound to be some who didn’t like it but I think it’s fair to say it was an immensely popular, award winning show that really hadn’t got at all stake - fair enough if you didn’t like the format, but the chemistry between the Simon and the team was evident every night.

squidgesquodge · 15/05/2018 20:20

Another painful journey home from work tonight. I switched to Magic in the end but got bored during the adverts.
I want silly chat and random bits of information which let my mind wander and the journey blur rather than lengthy interviews. I couldn't believe that the interview with Craig David was done exclusively by Jo was Simon actually having to say "may I ask a question" and sounding as though he was expecting to be told "no"!
I used to listen to JW occasionally and sometimes tuned in especially to listen to an interview but that was because it was a musician I was interested in rather than having one shoved down my throat.
And how can their only bit of "chat" at the first bit of the show be reading reviews of themselves and it being noticeable that they clearly had a really poor selection to choose from.
All request Friday used to be my least favourite show of the week but now I'm looking forward to it as, maybe, it will be more like the "old" days.

HelloBlueSkies · 15/05/2018 20:26

I binned radio 2 years ago, Steve Wright is bloody awful, I just can't take the chance that he'll be on.

I'm a radio X / radio 4 listener now, both appeal to my eclectic tastes Wink

Dozer · 15/05/2018 20:29

Jeez, did all the (mainly male) radio 1 DJs from the early 90s just move over to radio 2 on their big salaries?

Growingboys · 15/05/2018 20:31

I feel I ought to like her as I like the way she talks about special needs/her sibling.

BUT BUT

That voice is so fake. So try hard. So annoying.

DopeyDazy · 15/05/2018 20:38

Used to like drivetime but this is bad. Listened tonight and Simon sounds like her underling. Are they trying to get him to leave instead of paying him off. She is crap

superzoomer · 15/05/2018 20:50

I can't find a single positive comment about the new show on twitter!

FleeBee · 15/05/2018 20:58

I've sent a complaint & I'm not a complainer. Must be turning into my mother Blush
It was dull & awkward
Any other recommendations? Local radio is too cringey so need a new evening show to try.
Ironically it was Simon Mayo doing a Mumsnet chat that switched me from R1 to R2 for the drive home I used to listen to his breakfast show when I got ready for school.
I wonder if he will come back for another chat & why his show got completely mangled while everyone else can stay the same.

Seeingadistance · 15/05/2018 21:02

I managed to listen for a bit today. Kept having to change stations though, as it was so awful.

At least they've kept Confessions, but then that made me miss Matt. :(
