To hate Jo Wiley

Not personally obviously, surprisingly enough I don't know her, but I love the Radio 2 Drivetime programme and she is going to ruin it. I find her voice grating, she has a babyish breathy style that is highly irritating. The Drivetime show was perfect and now they have got rid of homework, foody Thursday with Nigel and they are getting rid of MATT!!!! Are they crazy???

I'm all for gender equality but why can't Jo share a show with Steve Wright as his show is already awful.

I know I may be getting this out of proportion but it feels like this show is part of my life and it's just gone.

Kids AND I used to love the Drivetime show....tuned in this evening and made a swift exit to the independent local station which at least played decent music even if it didn’t replace the banter. Do they not realise that actually the previous set up had the kids engaged as well as the adults? We used to have such a giggle. It doesn’t work. 😔

Belindabelle · 15/05/2018 08:21

It was crap. It was done for reasons of diversity as they had to have a female on a prime day time slot. I agree making a women a co host isn’t much of a step forward though.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 09:15

It was much too serious, there was no banter at all. And yes, at that time you want a bit of everything, something the kids will enjoy as well as commuters on their way home and parents cooking dinner. The mix before was, in my opinion, as close to perfection as a radio show can possbily be, and I cannot for the life me understand why they think this will be better.
I've never listed to JW before because my impression has always been that she's a music-person, and my interest in music is more bopping and background, I have zero interest in festivals or new bands etc. I think her voice is very nice to listen to, but she's not chatty or funny, so having her on this spot seems to be doing her a huge disservice.
And Simon...oh what have they done to Simon? He couldn't get a word in edgeways, sounded flat and down when he did manage to say something....horrible, just horrible.

Pancakeflipper · 15/05/2018 11:07

If they want diversity give Sara Cox the Steve Wright show - she'd be ace at that.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 11:21

Yes - JW is more late-night and Sara Cox more daytime chatty imo.

Belindabelle · 15/05/2018 11:32

Steve Wright must know where the bodies are buried because that show and format was old 15 years ago.

I listen to 6 Music in the afternoon but I am not too keen on Steve Lamacq who is on from 4. I like a wee bit of Eddie Mair but like a bit of music and chat too.

Pancakeflipper · 15/05/2018 11:35

I wish R6 had Radcliffe and MaConie on from 4pm - that would be my radio heaven

Merrylegs · 15/05/2018 11:43

See, already Simon is in position of 'poor bloke' and Jo in position of 'imposter'. He spoke loads! Plus he got to do the confession and then shared the taxi service which was Jo's slot. He might appeared to have sounded sad but he has a much more downbeat delivery. I thought he was positively cheery tbh and is in a much stronger position - no one will blame him if it fails. Jo has been thrown under the bus rather.

Fontella · 15/05/2018 11:48

So glad to see this thread.

Turned on the radio last night and thought WTF?

I loved the Drivetime show with Simon and Crew and am not a fan of posey Jo Wiley. I just don't like he pseudo uber-cool presenting style I'm afraid.

So I'm afraid that's it for me. I'll find another station to listen to while I'm making dinner or just put my iPod on.

JoffreyMonfrere · 15/05/2018 12:36

Don't know why they've given Sara Cox a 10pm slot - I really like her but I just don't listen to the radio at 10pm. Ever.
She would be great on Steve Wright's slot weekday afternoons ( sorry Steve, I quite like you but I accept I'm a lone voice) and SW could do a Sat & Sun show( not limited to Love Songs...)
I heard a bit of the new Drivetime show yesterday... but I can't remember any of it. To me, Simon M and Jo W are not a good match. They don't seem to have much in common or bounce off each other.

drumandthebass · 15/05/2018 13:00

I will give it another go today, but in the meantime I have complained to the BBC. I forget to mention to them how irritating it is that Steve Wright cuts short or talks over the end of records.

I might start campaigning to get Sara Cox on in the day whilst I'm at it

Belindabelle · 15/05/2018 16:39

Well I have just re tuned to Magic FM (never tried it before) to listen to Richard Allinson at 5pm.

MrsMozart · 15/05/2018 17:11

I've left the Mandarin cd aside for the moment and will give it a try while I do some work.

So far we've had a couple of words from each and we're on song two with no chat inbetween.

MrsMozart · 15/05/2018 17:16

And the first chat was two compliments on yesterday's show. That's rather sad.

So far it's flat.

I used to really like Drive Time.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 17:17

Yes too much music! I want end of the chat! Banter!

Slartybartfast · 15/05/2018 17:19

I thought radio 2 had had its knuckles wrapped for not enough talk Confused

Belindabelle · 15/05/2018 17:20

Oh no I don't like all the adverts and the music is a bit cheesy. I feel like I am in a episode of Peter Kays Car Share.

Pomegranatepompom · 15/05/2018 17:22

I really don't like the music now.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 15/05/2018 17:23

Bring on Sara Cox, I love her, please replace Ken and Steve, so dull. I'm not Sara btw ;-)

BobbinThreadbare123 · 15/05/2018 17:24

Ugh it is dull isn't it? They don't mesh. Simon has a sardonic delivery anyway and Jo has no sense of humour. I miss Matt.

MrsMozart · 15/05/2018 17:25

Some, thankfully, brief woffle about hot tubs and now another song.

Gosh. I really didn't realise nor appreciate what a good production the show was before. Now it's so 'try hard' yet failing.

No doubt some people will like it and they'll be happy. I remain tuned in at the moment in the awful-fascination-watching-a-train-wreck way, but will soon turn it off and not return.

P.S. I agree, get Sarah Cox onto a prime time day time show.

P.P.S. I don't actually hate JW, just don't see how she's meant to fit in here. She is, as someone said upthread, a music music presenter rather than a banter with somebody else presenter.

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 17:25

She constantly sounds like she’s doing a music review, her delivery is very earnest, whereas Simon is sort of wry and laconic. No meshing at all :(((((

TheKitchenWitch · 15/05/2018 17:26

I don’t understand why either of them agreed to this.

biscuitaddict · 15/05/2018 17:30

Don't mind jo whiley I'll give it a go but STEVE WRIGHT now he make my blood boil and my ears bleed!

MrsMozart · 15/05/2018 17:31

KitchenWitch - aye, presnting a music review, which is her bag and what she's good at. Simon is good at wit and repartee and holding all (as was The Team) together, which was far better for a show at this time of day. If I were driving now I'd have swapped to a cd as it's all too earnest and that's not what I need when on the second long commute of the day. Chris Evans' show with all the cackling guests on a Friday morning is bad enough, but at least that's only for about an hour.
