PIL has sent be a bill for a broken wine glass

Yes, had to namechange.

Went to PIL' home last weekend, had a glass of wine and I accidentally dropped it. No big deal, they shrugged it off. I get on well with both FIL and MIL, have been with DH for 4 years now and we are having our first child in 4 months.

They're well off.. as in, VERY well off.. DP and I on the other hand live in a rented 3 bed semi-dettached property so definitely not as well off.

I didn't know at the time, but said wine glass apparently happens to be pretty high end. FIL has this morning sent me an e-mail saying that I can just transfer the £156 to him or buy the glass online. He even attached a link and included their address, should I not know it by now(!).

At first I thought it was a joke only to realise that these people have no sense of humor, so they obviously must be expect me to pay them ASAP. Haven't told DH yet. Really shocked at this as they are not known for being stingy.

AIBU not to pay this? I am tempted to buy a £20 glass off Amazon!

I am speechless ! If they can’t afford to replace them then they shouldn’t use them .
Don’t pay tell your husband but like others have said I bet mil doesn’t have a clue!

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/05/2018 17:29

Exactly olenna. Offer to replace, but neither party expects a guest to actually replace the item.

It's not exactly a secret that glasses get broken fairly regularly. If you can't cope with that, they should be regarded as ornamental, and stored in a display case, rather than given to unsuspecting guests to take the risk that a moment's ham fistedness would land them with a 3 figure bill.

Serialweightwatcher · 03/05/2018 17:29

Need to know what these glasses look like - stupid money. It's his fault for using his posh glasses, you didn't ask for it ... hope your DH tells him to bog off

Byebyebye · 03/05/2018 17:32

I would never forgive someone if they put a glass in my hand that cost that much!

ChasedByBees · 03/05/2018 17:32

We have glasses that cost £15 each and I thought those were fancy. We don’t use them with friends who are gungho when doing ‘cheers’ because the risk would be mine. Glasses get broken and that’s life.

LizB62A · 03/05/2018 17:32

my ex-BF broke one of my Ikea porridge bowls - he didn't really apologise (in fact he didn't tell me he'd broken it, I had to figure it out when I couldn't find all the bowls after emptying the dishwasher)

I only had 6 of them and he's really careless with stuff that doesn't belong to him so I was a bit pissed off with him.
Enough to ask him to replace it.
He wasn't happy at all about being asked to replace it, even though he had 12 exactly the same at his own house.
He didn't want to not have a full set, but it was fine for me to only have 5

And that's one of the reasons that he's an ex.

Your FIL is being ridiculous though!

LadyLauraOver · 03/05/2018 17:32

£156 for a fancy implement to drink out of? speechless...

Knittedfairies · 03/05/2018 17:33

If the glass cost £156 I would be interested to know how much the wine cost that was in it.

raisedbyguineapigs · 03/05/2018 17:34

isn't this what insurance is for!

Teateaandmoretea · 03/05/2018 17:39

only on mn

BerylStreep · 03/05/2018 17:40

OP when you were offered you cocktail did you say yes, but only if it is in one of those glasses over there, and then point to their dresser full of best china and glass?

WitchDancer · 03/05/2018 17:41

£156 for a glass! 😱

Fletchasaurus · 03/05/2018 17:42

Wow I've read some stories but this is bad! If it was that big a deal they certainly should have mentioned it at the time and not over email! I really want to see the glass!

FASH84 · 03/05/2018 17:43

Liz it was an IKEA porridge bowl , get another one for a £1 . You both sound ridiculous

TatianaLarina · 03/05/2018 17:44

I think the more extraordinary thing is £156 for a glass you apparently can’t afford to replace yourself.

Teateaandmoretea · 03/05/2018 17:45

Yep, ex bf probably cites her expecting him to replace Ikea bowl as one of the reasons she's an ex.....

AlonsoTigerHeart · 03/05/2018 17:45

My fancy glasses are £2 each.
Fancy means not plastic here

PUGaLUGS · 03/05/2018 17:47

When MIL calls you, casually drop it into the conversation that you didn’t realise they had such expensive wine glasses and you are sorry FIL had to contact you with regards to cost. I bet she has no idea and will take him to task over it.

TotHappy · 03/05/2018 17:49

Fgs, WHAT'S HAPPENING with your DP, OP! How dare he be late home today!!

flumpybear · 03/05/2018 17:49

Bloody hell what an arsehole!!

GlitteryFluff · 03/05/2018 17:50

Definitely tell dh.

Hissy · 03/05/2018 17:50

Hope your h nixes this ridiculous behaviour right in the bud

Don’t reply, let h deal with it, and absolutely DONT pay for it.

hazeydays14 · 03/05/2018 17:50

My fancy glasses were about £40 for 6 so not at all fancy by these standards but I love them. That’s why I don’t let one of my friends use them because she’s so clumsy, she gets my cheap ones Grin

If you care that much about the glasses, don’t use them!

sheldonesque · 03/05/2018 17:51

I would pay it. And then never visit them again.

Should they wish to visit, they would be handed an invoice for everything from squares of lavvy paper, to cost of boiling water for a brew, hire of cups - right down to the air they breathed in your house.

Hoping that they would choose not to visit again.

CalF123 · 03/05/2018 17:51

I think it's a tough one. Obviously in normal circumstances, breaking a wine glass would just be passed off as one of those things, but a £156 wine glass is a different kettle of fish. I think I'd offer to make a contribution.
