To think you shouldn’t stink of sweat at the gym?

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 13:38

At the gym this morning, finished my workout on the treadmill and there was a man there that smelt so badly of BO, he wasn’t even that close to me.

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell. Stale sweat does.

OP posts:

"But I smell a bit like BO already when I get out of bed and feel unclean if I don't shower before dressing. No way would I put clean clothes on if I haven't washed first."

Wash the smelly parts then. Not good for you two have two showers in a short time.

MrsCatE · 05/05/2018 10:40

I agree with OP, Not all gyms smell. People can be vile - one person in mine smelled like a third world toilet and obviously stank out the place. It must have been a condition - not fish odour syndrome but something similar. There is also a very smelly lady and a bloke who works out in same kit every day including a sweatshirt and vinyl puffer jacket when he does cardio! He's slim but think it must be for weight loss reason - he can't be a jockey but perhaps boxer? Anyway, he's rank. Gym's are an etiquette minefield!

TuftedLadyGrotto · 05/05/2018 10:49

I don't shower before doing a run or going to parkrun. Complete waste of water. I smell pretty ripe by the end and that's in clean running stuff.

Saturday morning parkrun often has multiple smells... stale beer, curry, kebab, and eau naturele ;)

It takes as much time to jump in the shower for a quick rinse as it does to stand and wash at the sink plus it makes less mess on the floor. I don't wash my hair, just wash pits and bits and rinse - takes a few minutes

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2018 13:13

I don't agree demented. If you're standing under the shower your whole body'll get wet so you'll have to either dry off or (what I do) put body lotion and wait for it to absorb.
A quick wash of pits and bits with only a bit of water shouldn't make a mess.

19lottie82 · 05/05/2018 13:37

Gwen what’s the big deal if someone wants to take a quick rinse off in the morning to make themselves feel better before they head out? To say “it’s not good for you” is a bit dramatic!

Sometimes I do this and I’m literally in and out in 15 seconds.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/05/2018 23:39

It's not good for your skin lottie. Bad for the environment as well and a waste of time.
Sounds a bit obsessive to me as well.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 05/05/2018 23:50

Ye gawds. Rewearing sweaty t-shirts without washing?

That's the best way to get odours embedded into the armpits until they're unliftable.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 05/05/2018 23:51

You don't smell when you sweat IF you've had a shower.

Jimwenttothedarklands · 05/05/2018 23:59

I smell after running. I'm a sweaty betty at the best of times and when I'm running there is literally nothing I can do about it.

I also had a top that I didn't realise until I'd worn it a few times that it had a smell ingrained in it.

It's not pleasant I know but people sweat at the gym and sweat (fresh or otherwise) smells.

Jimwenttothedarklands · 06/05/2018 00:01

Juat to be clear - the top was hetting washed between wears! Blush

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/05/2018 00:12

If you are to precious to cope with the smell of sweat at a gym then you shouldn't be exercising in a group setting. FFS its a gym, people sweat.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2018 09:30

Yes people swear. What they shouldn't do is reel of days old BO

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 06/05/2018 09:38

I suspect this thread is divided between people who have no idea what someone exercising in dirty kit smells like and those of us who wish we still didn't.

mum11970 · 06/05/2018 10:06

I’m assuming those that can get more than one wear out of their gym clothes before washing are the same ones who enter and leave the gym with their make up perfectly intact rather than someone like me who sweats like no tomorrow and can get through two sets of gym kit in a day if I exercise in the morning and then go back for an evening class. Going to the gym 5 or 6 times a week is no excuse for rewearing kit. Buy more kit, it’s available pretty cheaply if you don’t insist on named brands that offer nothing extra for the price. I exercise pretty much every day and have yet to run out of fresh kit because I own enough for my needs. I’ll put money on me not smelling as fresh as a daisy all the time, as I’ll often go straight from one class to another or from a cardio class to a weights session.

Agreed.

If you have the money, organisational skills and leisure time for going to the gym six days a week, I doubt you're one of the unfortunate masses who can't possibly afford to have more than one top.

There are times and contexts where I give the benefit of the doubt to people who are wearing obviously dirty clothes, because a lot of people are financially struggling, but not this one.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/05/2018 17:14

Some of my favourite gym kit is from Primark. It's ridiculously cheap!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 06/05/2018 17:16

Fresh sweat does have a smell, but it's a very sexy one.

19lottie82 · 06/05/2018 20:19

Asda does great gym wear very cheaply.
Sports bras £6 and leggings £12, both fantastic quality.

Iamblossom · 08/05/2018 13:41

I sweat buckets and would always wear clean clothes to the gym. I have to bin them after a few months and replace as even after washing they smell. I had to get off my XTrainer and move to another one to get away from the guy next to me recently, who absolutely stank it was horrific.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/05/2018 13:43

Doh yes people sweat at the gym, and it can stink. Especially in this hot weather, its very easy to sweat when working out.

MorganKitten · 08/05/2018 13:49

I get up and gym, I go home to shower, then back to the gym to work (10mins of each other)
I play roller derby.
I am the sweatiest women alive, I stink after training or the gym. If I've been drinking the night before my hair normally smells like alcohol after the gym. I always wear clean gym stuff.
Pay attention to your own work out not smelling others at the gym.

crazycatgal · 08/05/2018 13:50

I understand what you mean.

I'm always clean and in clean gym clothes when I work out so even though I sweat I don't smell.

My friend doesn't sweat as much when working out but wears workout clothes more than once before washing them and ends up smelling of stale sweat.

loulou987 · 08/05/2018 15:11

He is lacking in personal hygiene. Yes you go to the gym to sweat but that kind of stench means that he probably isn't wearing clean gym kit & was probably stinking of BO before he even stepped foot in the gym.

Naturally sweaty person here with oily skin, if I knew I was stinky I certainly would have a quick shower before gym to prevent stinking like that ( and after too ) I also wear clean washed gym kit every time.

BO only stinks when it's accumulated sweat.

Rank. I would have gipped & walked off somewhere else.

People who stink like that aren't going to change, for starters he should of been relatively clean before he stepped foot in there & I doubt that's the case here.

Toomanynamestoremember · 08/05/2018 20:32

This is exactly why I shower before going to the gym. Stale body smell is so much worse when you work the sweat up. IMO It is antisocial to wear non-fresh kit to the gym, and yes it is rank and others do notice. Same as you wouldn’t wear stale clothes to the office or social get togethers. It is not nice for others around you.

If you are freshly showered and wearing properly washed kit, you do not smell at all even sweating profusely, bar medical issues.

I also wash my gym kit with Napisan, as others rightly pointed out BO smell gets activated in clean washed clothes when they get to a certain temperature. Napisan seems to sort this out.
