To think you shouldn’t stink of sweat at the gym?

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 13:38

At the gym this morning, finished my workout on the treadmill and there was a man there that smelt so badly of BO, he wasn’t even that close to me.

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell. Stale sweat does.

He’s obviously working hard so leave him tf alone. Everyone sweats differently.

Nobody has sweat that smells of BO. It’s nothing to do with “working hard” Confused

That smell comes from Not washing yourself and clothing between workouts. If you have your own private gym, fair enough that’s your choice, crack on. But when you’re working out just feet from other people it’s gross and selfish.

Lovemusic33 · 03/05/2018 17:01

sweat not swear

givemushypeasachance · 03/05/2018 17:03

There's one older guy who uses the leisure centre gym I go to who falls into the "stinking out the gym" category. I go pretty much every morning and see him there several days in a row as well, and he's always wearing either the same or identical clothes. I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same ones. He carries a towel to wipe off machines and no joke it's dirty brown and ripped ragged around the edges - it looks like something you'd use as a rag to clean car engine parts. He works out hard and evidently is quite a sweaty person because it splashes all over the elliptical machine or treadmill he's on. If he comes and uses the machine right next to me I have to breathe through my mouth and try to ignore him, but usually move off to some other equipment sooner than I would otherwise because it's really off-putting. I try not to be so judgey but come on try to limit your impact on others, and just seeing him wipe the machines with that towel is boak-inducing.

Idontdowindows · 03/05/2018 17:04

Fresh sweat does smell. Maybe yours doesn't, but that just means that your body composition is different from other people.

My sweat smells straightaway and even I can smell it, so you're being unreasonable.

19lottie82 · 03/05/2018 17:06

Fresh sweat does smell.

Of course it does, but it doesn’t stink the same way as old sweat. The latter is what causes BO, not fresh sweat.

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 17:06

Gross and selfish...or economical and pragmatic?
I fear we may have to agree to disagree.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/05/2018 17:07

Haha @BitOutOfPractice beat me too it!! If you can wear your gym/running clothes more than once you aren't working hard enough Grin

I literally have to peel mine off because they are stuck to me, they're as damp as the are when they come out of the washing machine Confused

I smell straight away, especially at the end of a long run.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 17:09

Smeddum only one of those comments was about the man and it was factual

ethelfleda · 03/05/2018 17:10

I'd have thought that the gym is the only place where it's ok to smell of sweat Confused

EdWinchester · 03/05/2018 17:10

I go to a 6.45am class every week and there is one guy there that stinks. He’s obviously a sweaty chap and he once said to me that he gets up at 6.30, so I suspect he doesn’t shower first and possibly puts stale gym gear on. His clothes give off that particular pong that ‘already sweated in’ gym stuff gets.

Anyway, the combination of the 2 is just rancid. There’s a bit of a scrum in the class to position yourself away from where he goes.

Sometimes on the treadmill I have the misfortune to be next to a stinky bloke (it’s always blokes ime). Thoroughly unpleasant.

I would never wear gym gear twice nor leave the house without a quick shower. Some people are either lacking self awareness or just selfish mingers.

Smeddum · 03/05/2018 17:10

@BitOutOfPractice so they’re ok about other people?

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 17:12

One of them was about me I think. I'm vile apparently.
I'm not too worried because I'm fairly sure that I'm not actually vile.

FrangipaniBlue · 03/05/2018 17:13

I know, I'm just delighted to be on a "how often do you wash...?" thread where I'm not a skank

Me too, I am usually team skank on these threads!!!! 🤣

19lottie82 · 03/05/2018 17:23

I'd have thought that the gym is the only place where it's ok to smell of sweat

It is. But not of BO.

Popadoodledoo · 03/05/2018 17:28

@ikeep for all you know he might be wearing clean clothes but just sweats and smells alot!

There's no justifying being a load of judgy pants

magoria · 03/05/2018 17:30

There is a massive difference between fresh sweat and BO.

There was a guy at my gym and you knew he was there the instant you entered the room.

I had to move away to the equipment the far end if he came over the side I was and mouth breath. It actually made me feel sick and close to heaving.

And I am a very sweaty person when I go.

19lottie82 · 03/05/2018 17:32

for all you know he might be wearing clean clothes but just sweats and smells A lot!

I doubt it. As has been pointed out in this thread many times, there is a million miles of difference between the smell of fresh sweat and BO. It’s very easy to tell the difference.

Bluntness100 · 03/05/2018 17:32

I agre op, there is a man at our gym who smells of bad bo. It's very acrid and really unpleasant and can smell the whole place outl as in it hits you as soon as you walk in.

There is a difference between fresh sweat smell and strong stale body odour.

I don't know if he has a medical problem, or if he is generally unhygienic. But there is no denying he is the only person who I have encountered who can make the gym smell like that. The others may be sweating heavily but it's nothing like the acrid and very, very strong body odour this man suffers from.

I'd also agree if you sweat into your clothes, wash them and don't rewear them and sweat even more into the stale sweat already ingrained in the material. There is no reason to be unhygienic anywhere and that includes the gym.

JazKish · 03/05/2018 17:37

Some people have smelly sweat without working out ,some don't smell at all even if they never had a bath in their life.I am a proof of that, without antiperspirant my smell would take over the entire room even straight after shower.,and I shower all the time.My sister on the other hand doesn't sweat at all and has no smell even after work out. And I have met people that have poor hygiene, but their sweat has no odour. Antiperspirant will block any smell,I guess some ppl don't use it.

LaGattaNera · 03/05/2018 17:43

Most blokes I know that go to the gym in the morning definitely do not shower first and some rinse out their smelly sweaty kit in the shower when they shower after the class (spin) and then spin it in the machine that gets the water out of swimwear and then leave the kit outside at home to dry then use it the next day - a double whammy - men who haven't showered putting on dry but whiffy unwashed kit.

They are the same blokes who have a number 2 the minute they arrive at the gym and stink out the changing rooms and have a shave in the sink and don't clean up - my OH has told me all this.

These men also do not have a towel in the spin room so the floor around their bike is saturated and has a pool around it and they merely need to turn their head and you can get sprayed.

Some do a spin class then go into the studio and do a pump class immediately after in their soaking stinky kit and same happens in there - a pool of sweat on the floor and they put a mat down and sweat into that, soak it and then afterwards they hang it up without wiping it between all the other mats. DISGUSTING.

JazKish · 03/05/2018 17:49

My fresh smell has an odour, I have seen many ppl like that too ,it is not a medical situation,it also doesn't mean their hygiene is bad. Deodorant after shower will take care of it,but without it my entire outfit would smell, and no one would come near me.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 18:42

There is a special circle of hell reserved for people invariably men that don't wipe the gym equipment down after sweating on it

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 18:45

In fact I got called a "stupid fucking bitch" at the gym by a bloke for asking him to wipe down a treadmill after leaving it literally dripping

Aragog · 03/05/2018 18:59

think it's ok to wear gym clothes more than once between washes

I just couldn't wear them again. They don't smell particularly and I do rewear tiger clothes regularly, but I just couldn't after the gym.

I put my whole kit in the washer for a short 30 degrees 20 min wash after every session and a warmer, longer wash every couple of weeks (so after 4-6 wears)

eggsandchips · 03/05/2018 19:03

Oh dear I hate that - or any really strong smell like loads of perfume or such like at a gym. It makes me feel ill. I don't know whether that's worse or the crappy music they play 😬
