To think you shouldn’t stink of sweat at the gym?

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 13:38

At the gym this morning, finished my workout on the treadmill and there was a man there that smelt so badly of BO, he wasn’t even that close to me.

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell. Stale sweat does.

Why would your clothes still be damp the day after? Surely you hang them up?

No, I wash them!
And if I don't, they are likely still damp the day after. I don't hang dirty clothes. Who does that?

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 15:22

Properlavs- the reason I wash other clothes is because I wear them to work, or for socialising and I don't want to whiff in those circumstances. I don't wash my gym clothes or my slobbing around the house clothes as often because I don't think i need to small fresh as a daisy when I'm at the gym/slobbing around.
Bitoutofpractice- I agree putting on damp clothes would be gross, don't you have quick drying gym clothes? The ones I have are dry within about an hour or two of being hung up.

Earthwindnfiya · 03/05/2018 15:28

I agree with @HappilyHarridan haha

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 15:28

Why would I hang dirty clothes up?

nickEcave · 03/05/2018 15:28

This is why I don't go to gyms! I run in the park, I get sweaty and stinky but no one else has to smell it and then I go home and shower.

ProperLavs · 03/05/2018 15:28

but other people are at the gym and you smelling of stale sweaty clothes is horrible.

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 15:31

So that they aren't damp next time you wear them :)

There are other people at the gym, it's true, but it's generally accepted that they will not be smelling fragrant and fresh!

ProperLavs · 03/05/2018 15:32

I haven't been to a gym for years, prefer doing hit at home or going for walks. I am much fitter and have more muscle than I ever did at the gym. Anyway, I digress. I do remember how absolutely revolting it was to go to a machine and some minging person hadn't wiped their sweat off it when they left. They probably didn't wash their clothes after a session either.

IrianOfW · 03/05/2018 15:33

Would wear a running shirt and shorts again at a push if it hasn't been a long run but not socks or bra. It seems counter-intuitive to shower before a run/workout but sometimes in an enclosed space it's necessary IMO to stop other people choking on your stink Grin

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 15:38

Oh god, no not socks! Just to be clear I do not dry out my socks and re wear them Grin

TinDogTavern · 03/05/2018 15:43

I don’t think there’s anything in life I enjoy more than a good old MN Neurotics vs Mingers thread.

(Team Minger FTW). Grin

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 15:46

To be fair I have been waiting years for the question of how often you wash your gym clothes to come up on MN so am excited the day is finally here Grin

I travel a lot, currently on the road for 15 days, and I exercise 6 days a week. I didn't bring 12 workout outfits with me! I brought 3 bras, about 6 bottoms/leggings and maybe 6 tops. I hang up what I wore as soon as I get back to my room, spray with febreeze, and let it dry.

If I just lifted weights, it's not sweaty. If I ran, then it can be very sweaty. I can run in something a couple of times and it won't smell because it's hung up to air for at least 24 hours before it's worn again. Anyway, I run outdoors so nobody can smell me, anyway. And what I wear for weights doesn't get sweaty.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 15:53

Happily Grin I know, I'm just delighted to be on a "how often do you wash...?" thread where I'm not a skank Wink

But seriously, if your gym clothes are sweaty enough to need hanging up to dry out, then surely they are sweaty enough to need a wash. Surely.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2018 15:57

All gyms smell of sweaty socks and trainers imho. You probably don’t notice this if you go all the time, nose blind and all that.Grin

Mouseville65 · 03/05/2018 16:02

I always wear clean clothes for the gym but I stink when I leave - my fresh sweat definitely smells! When I train with the PT I'm forever saying 'sorry I stink' 🙈

2rebecca · 03/05/2018 16:03

I'm quite smelly after a session at the gym, especially if I'm doing threshold sessions on the spin bikes. Technical tshirts seem to make things worse. If just doing a few weights I'm fine but if getting my HR up I'm smelly same with my husband. My gym clothes get washed after every session. 30deg sports wash

I would never re wear sweaty socks, that's going too far even for me haha. But the odd sports bra or leggings I don't mind wearing a few times.

ShotsFired · 03/05/2018 16:11

I only have enough bottoms and bras to keep up with my exercise classes for about half a week at the moment. So I tend to wash/rinse them in the shower (swoosh them in the soapy water underfoot as I clean myself) after the first wearing. I then re wear once more and machine wash the whole lot in one go at end of the week.

My tops I hang up to dry out first, and then put in the laundry bin. They do whiff a bit by washday!

Maybe OP's guy forgot to pack a top this time and had to drag out a stinky old one? Been there before...!

Popadoodledoo · 03/05/2018 16:24

Here.. Biscuit

You deserve it because you're so up your own arse.

Well done. You work out 6 times a week, and wear fresh clean clothes every single time.

I also bet you don't have young children to cater for. Not everyone has the time and money to change there workout clothes 6 times, Stop being so cruel.

This thread seems more like a 'look everyone, aren't I perfect, I go to the gym every day, and I always have nice clean clothes, oh and I eat diamonds and shit gold'

Maybe he’s depressed and struggles with personal hygiene, maybe he doesn’t give a fuck what people think of him, maybe he can’t afford to wash loads all the time, maybe, maybe, the list is endless.

Your tone and unkindness says a lot more about the kind of person you are than his smell says about him!

Smeddum · 03/05/2018 16:30

Oh and I wear clean clothes daily, as do DP and our children. That doesn’t make us special in any way, it’s personal preference.

You’re no better than anyone else because you have different opinions on what’s clean or not. You do your thing, let other people do theirs. Gyms stink, it’s what happens when a lot of people get sweaty in a confined space.

19lottie82 · 03/05/2018 16:33

“Your tone and unkindness says a lot more about the kind of person you are than his smell says about him!”

I’m sorry (in fact, I’m not), but what a load of bull shit. If you’re going to the gym and working out within close proximity of other people, have a wash and wash your work out gear so you don’t inflict your BO into other people. Hmm
