To think you shouldn’t stink of sweat at the gym?

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 13:38

At the gym this morning, finished my workout on the treadmill and there was a man there that smelt so badly of BO, he wasn’t even that close to me.

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell. Stale sweat does.

I normally smell after a gym session tbh, I will of worked out fucking hard....

DH cycles a lot and always smells when he gets back from a long cycle....

Maybe your fresh sweat doesn’t smell but I am afraid some people must do

BunnyColvin · 03/05/2018 14:07

The smell of fresh sweat that happens during a workout or just after? Absolutely fine. A rank smell of BO that would knock you out across the room? Just no. That's a result of either prolonged not washing the body or not washing the clothes, or both. There's a distinct difference between the two. Sorry but in a gym situation, the latter is pretty disgusting, but 'clean body and clothes' sweating is absolutely fine.

As for washing clothes, I can't ever imagine a scenario where I'd break a sweat and not wash those clothes after one wear. But that's me. Maybe I'm a sweatier Betty than others? Grin

TheOrigFV45 · 03/05/2018 14:11

I imagine it's his clothes. Unless you use a special sports wash, they do eventually just hold on to smell, which regular washing masks only until you start to get hot.

I run outside so can get a couple of wears out of my kit. In the gym I would wear something only once before washing.

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 14:11

He stunk out a whole area of the gym. That’s not normal.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 03/05/2018 14:11

get an extra use out of a sports bra but not anything else
bras are the worst items after a sport session.

halo sport wash is great, makes your clothes smell strongly of chemical if you put too much, but get rid of all bad smells

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 14:14

I think it's ok to wear gym clothes more than once between washes

It really isn't if you've sweated in them

And if you haven't you haven't worked hard enough Wink

pigmcpigface · 03/05/2018 14:14

What bunny said.

One only becomes the other if you're working out for literally hour after hour after hour.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 14:15

And I speak as someone who is on the skanky side of the MN skankometer usually re bed clothes etc

kaytee87 · 03/05/2018 14:18

Wearing sweaty gym clothes more than once is really rank.

BodakBlue · 03/05/2018 14:24

I agree with previous posters, there is no issue wearing gym clothes twice/three times in a row. If you're like me and go to the gym 5 times + a week it's not quite that easy to wear fresh gym clothes every single time and it also seems a bit pointless when all you are going to do is get them sweaty again. In addition to this I will regularly have a lazy weekend and then plan to go to the gym on a Sunday, I often won't bother showing on the Saturday/Sunday morning, after sitting in my house all day, because I know I'm not going out other than to the gym later on and that I'm going to shower after the gym on the Sunday, as a result I probably do smell a bit iffy after/during a hardcore leg day workout. People go there to sweat, that's the whole point no? I also find that if you live/work in a city such as London most people will sweat a lot throughout the day, despite using deodorant, due to rushing around/overcrowded public transport etc, meaning you're more likely to have stale sweat sitting there over the course of the day, which in turn is more likely to smell. Some people do just sweat a lot more than others.

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 14:28

I think as a general rule washing gym clothes every week is fine, for me that normally means every 2/3 wears they get a wash. I do sweat heavily in them, obviously, but am not a very smelly person and they don't seem to smell so why wash them more often purely so I can go and get them sweaty again?
I had a friend who disagreed with me on this so we did a sniff test and she couldn't tell which of my tops had been worn to the gym twice and which was clean. we just live Ina culture of overwashing everything in my opinion and it's not something I'm keen on.

JustGettingStarted · 03/05/2018 14:28

I don't sweat much when I lift weights. I sweat a lot doing intense cardio but I usually run outdoors

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 03/05/2018 14:34

there is no issue wearing gym clothes twice/three times in a row.

I think it's disgusting. Even when I train 5 or 6 days a week, I wear clean outfit for indoor sessions at the very least. I understand if you put a dirty tshirt to go for a yun outside, but in a room with other people.. yuk.

If people were strict on daily showers, they wouldn't smell so bad, even in London. I always have a shower before going to bed, but still.

ProperLavs · 03/05/2018 14:34

I agree that wearing clothes you have sweated heavily in more than once really is rank. I am certainly not an over washer of clothes, but after exercising? Most definitely.

HappilyHarridan · 03/05/2018 14:38

Even if you are only wearing them in order to sweat heavily again?? It's not like you're going to someone's house or to a restaurant, you're just going to immediately make the a sweaty mess again. Unless you're someone whose sweat really does stink I don't see how it can be worth putting on fresh and clean clothes every time you want to pour with sweat!

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 14:43

Yes, even if you're "only going to sweat in them again"

To start with, it must feel gross to put on slightly damp clothes again And I do it for other people's benefit, not just my own. I really don't want to think someone is looking at me sideways thinking "gooness she reeks". Because I would, as soon as the sweaty gym clothes warmed up again

I'm not an over washer either but I most definitely wash gym clothes after each wear. And I go to the gym 5-6 times a week, you just need aenough stuff to put a gym was on once a week

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 03/05/2018 14:46

There's a difference between the fresh sweat smell, which isn't really that unpleasant, and the mature, haven't washed myself/clothes in days smell, which is really unpleasant, and gets right into the back of your nasal passages.

The first is fine, the second, I would expect the gym staff to have a word - just like I would if someone was wearing strong perfume, or spraying so much deoderant that no-one could breath.

ProperLavs · 03/05/2018 14:47

going by the logic of there being no point because you're only going to sweat again then why do we bother washing any clothes at all? I mean what's the point in washing clothes if they're only going to get dirty again? Confused

Allthestarskendrick · 03/05/2018 15:03

Eww some proper rank people on this thread. Bet you’re one of the people that stink out areas of the gym but can’t tell because you’re so used to your old stale sweat smell.

I work out 6 times a week and magically manage to wear clean clothes each time.

OP posts:
19lottie82 · 03/05/2018 15:08

I’m happy enough to go for a day without a shower now and again and will wear a regular bra for 3 days, but.............

The posters who admit to wearing gym stuff three times in a row are rank. That’s just grim. Shock

vitara · 03/05/2018 15:10

I have had tops before that smell fresh when I put them on but activity 'activates' them and they stink of BO.

They're gym clothes so I let it ride a little longer than other clothes.

Why would your clothes still be damp the day after? Surely you hang them up? Also why would anyone care about what a complete stranger at the gym thinks about them while they're working out? I'm there for a workout I'm not there to seek other peoples approval, if that person was working out hard enough I doubt they would be even notice and if they did, I honestly wouldn't give a shit haha.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 03/05/2018 15:17

Some people just smell. My husband always wears clean workout gear but still manages to come home smelling like a wet dog.

BitOutOfPractice · 03/05/2018 15:21

I'm there for a workout I'm not there to seek other peoples approval

Of course. But I'm not there to get their disapproval either (which they would be perfectly entitled to if I was stinking the place out!) or to adversely affect their workout (by stinking the place out) ha ha Hmm

Why would your clothes still be damp the day after? Surely you hang them up?

I shower at the gym. I put my sweaty gym clothes in the special vented part of my gym bag. When I get home I take them out. They are damp. If I have sweated enough for them to be damp, then I have sweated enough for them to need washing. So no, I don't hang them up, I wash them!
