About avocado peel?

Furiousaboutinstarubbish · 03/05/2018 06:59

I had brunch in an expensive avocado smashing kind of place.

Half way through I realised that in the smash was unpeeled avocado, and I was eating it.

It was a small place and I didn't want to make a fuss, so I very quietly told the waitress and explained I would like a refund as that was unacceptable. She came back to me with three free coffee vouchers and a croissant and explained that they didn't want to refund me as I'd eaten half of it.

I quietly accepted and left.

Should I have insisted on a refund?

Expensive avocado smashing kind of place is an excellent description.

However, I wouldn't have expected anything back at all for a 3mm wide bit of skin. My guess would be that whoever cut round the avo sort of overlapped so there was a bit of skin left dangling which fell in with the rest.

To the person above who talked about avo injuries- my theory is that it's people who try to cut round their avo while holding it in their hand (as you see done on TV by people like Jamie Oliver). Use a board, Jamie!

Is anyone else thinking of this Fawlty Towers sketch?

I must be hipper than all of you, as I know that some avos -eg Hass variety have dark knobbly skins, like that of an adolescent crocodile. You couldn't eat Hass skins. But other varieties - eg fuerte are greener, thinner, no knobbles and you could easily eat a cm or two to save making a fuss.

Also, no need to attack the stone with a knife -it eases out with with a teaspoon.

Meanwhile in Syria where CaMePlaitPas, is currently volunteering, or raising funds for, campaigning for the children, etc etc? Which is it? Or does making snide little comments just make you feel superior?

Marcellus · 03/05/2018 09:29

Ha- I missed that. Hope CaMePlaitPas is going to post the same comment on every thread where people are discussing things less important than Syria. Busy busy!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 03/05/2018 09:30

A large piece of peel in it? I think they should have refunded it. It is inedible and would put me off. I would ask for a refund if I got egg shell my scrambled egg though. It's not supposed to be there.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 10:05

I had low fat avocados in America. They were not very nice - a bit waxy and watery tasting...

Laiste · 03/05/2018 10:25

I cut them in half grip the stone in my teeth pull it out and spit it straight in the bin Grin

(obvs. not if i'm serving other folks)

dietcokemango · 03/05/2018 10:39

Smashed just makes me think of Brian with the egg and hammer in Spaced.

@SockQueen
Spot on, I must live nearby too!

DougFargo · 03/05/2018 11:02

in what kind of fancy brunch place do you pay before eating?

TonTonMacoute · 03/05/2018 11:04

I adore avocados, but I find most of the ones I buy really disappointing.

I particularly hate the Waitrose ones. A lot of them seem to come from Peru, and they are rubbish.

pigmcpigface · 03/05/2018 11:14

doug - in many of these avocado-bothering hipster places, you go to a counter and order beforehand, and it makes sense to pay then too as this avoids a second encounter with grumpy beards and lumberjack shirts who are apt to start self-pitying sentences with the phrase "I'll think you'll find that for my generation...' usually said to people less than 10 years older than them.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/05/2018 11:16

Slice round lengthways. Twist two halves apart. Bang knife blade into stone. Twist. Job done.

Littlelondoner · 03/05/2018 12:19

Sure it wasnt a bit of the stone? Sometimes if underripe a layer sticks.

Either way shouldnt of been there....

RhiWrites · 03/05/2018 12:21

They could have refunded you half the cost. I don’t really like vouchers instead of refunds, are you that likely to return to use them at a place that cocked something up?

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 03/05/2018 12:26

Avocado is bloody gorgeous. I like it mashed and mixed with ground almonds, on toast, drizzled with maple syrup. Food of the gods.

Meanwhile in Syria...

Shit, sorry! Didn't realise mumsnet AIBU had turned into a board for discussing specifically Syria.

What are you doing for the people in Syria, care to enlighten us?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 14:19

I had one on a pizza once. Just the once mind.

mrjoepike · 03/05/2018 14:51

easy avo 101
buy them firm/you can decide when to eat them
in fridge will not ripen
put in brown paperbag and set out
takes about 2 days to get to ripe perfection
avo does not belong on pizza.
avo on roast turkey sandwiche with mayo and cheese tho is one of my summer favs
or with lemon/lime juice and salt and pepper eat right out of skin with a spoon.

TomRavenscroft · 03/05/2018 14:53

I guarantee it was peeled - you can’t even chew Avocado peel. Do you mean it was slightly raw?

Of course you can chew avocado peel Confused It's tough, yes, but it won't break your teeth. And of course it was raw! What a deeply weird post.

OP, regardless of how much you'd eaten, I think a decent place would be falling over themselves to make you happy and make you want to come back. They should have offered a refund. I'd leave them a poor review and not go back.

PositivelyPERF · 03/05/2018 14:59

Avocado on pizza is gorgeous.

Redpony1 · 03/05/2018 15:38

Avocado is absolutely vile, you WBU to even order it Grin

TheClitterati · 03/05/2018 17:04

I know someone with an avocado tree (not in UK). Its amazing. The avocado hide and then when you see 1 you see 100's.

Once fully grown the avocado can stay on the tree for months before being picked. Then you pick them and they take up to a couple of weeks to ripen. So if you want to eat a couple of avocados a day, you pick a couple a day and put them in a line somewhere :)

irregularegular · 03/05/2018 17:27

I think you are seriously overreacting. And must live a very stressful life every minor flaw takes on such major importance. Honestly - a scrap of avocado skin?? This is not going to break any teeth, cause food poisoning, or an allergic reaction. It's not an insect or a hair. It doesn't even taste bad I'd pick if out and carry on, without a second thought. Just maybe I would mention it to be helpful, but I'd be amazed if I was offered anything. I think you did very well!
