About avocado peel?

Furiousaboutinstarubbish · 03/05/2018 06:59

I had brunch in an expensive avocado smashing kind of place.

Half way through I realised that in the smash was unpeeled avocado, and I was eating it.

It was a small place and I didn't want to make a fuss, so I very quietly told the waitress and explained I would like a refund as that was unacceptable. She came back to me with three free coffee vouchers and a croissant and explained that they didn't want to refund me as I'd eaten half of it.

I quietly accepted and left.

Should I have insisted on a refund?

🥑 (must be trendy if it's got an emoji!)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/05/2018 08:22

A decent cafe would have given you a replacement or refund. Avocado peel would make the texture unpleasant and inedible.

‘Smashed’ is just a pretentious term for knocked about veg.

DeathCap · 03/05/2018 08:24

off topic, but what does avocado taste like? i have never tried it

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 08:25

You couldn't really mash the skin so more likely a bit was left when it was peeled and because it's not squished smoothly, it was overlooked.

The cafe in my office building does smashed avo on fancy toast with a poached egg - £8.95! 😮

@Buggeritimgettingup to save you the trouble

Ridiculous parenting thread

Enjoy!

Buggeritimgettingup · 03/05/2018 08:27

£8.95!!!!! Fuck me sideways.

Buggeritimgettingup · 03/05/2018 08:27

Thanks uniglo!

This made me smile right at the start because I know exactly the sort of place you mean. It's what my DD calls "very millennial"

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 08:28

Avocado is lovely - creamy and buttery (if ripe). I put a lot of lemon and pepper on mine.

I'm still not sure how do many people cut themselves opening them up though. I put it on the chopping board pointt tlside up, holding the sides and slice downwards to the stone and roll it over the board with the knife so the it cuts along the stone. If the stone doesn't pop out easily then it's not ripe anyway.

Laiste · 03/05/2018 08:28

Deathcap - it's a bit bland and weirdly slightly soapy tasting. A 'green' sort of taste, the way lettuce is. Not strong or lingering. People tend to love it or hate it. I love it!

Laiste · 03/05/2018 08:29

Yes, when ripe it's texture is creamy or buttery.

SockQueen · 03/05/2018 08:29

DeathCap nowhere near nice enough to justify the current hype about it.

As for "expensive avocado smashing place" I'm guessing no reservations, mismatched industrial style furniture, waiters in too-tight trousers, with beards and hipster glasses, very serious about coffee, menu that just says "smashed avo on sourdough 6.5" with no £ sign or 0 on the end but with their FB, insta and twitter details at the bottom so you can share photos of your artisanal meal. Am I on the right lines?

OMG I have serious ‘Avo Avo on your doorstep’ envy! I might have to plan a long weekend up in Glasgow!

troodiedoo · 03/05/2018 08:31

Oh come on, we all know the type of place.

Seems to be an outbreak of pedanticitis recently.

I think what she offered you was fair.

Laiste · 03/05/2018 08:32

I sometimes buy one and just eat it scooping it out of the skin with a teaspoon alongside a tub of prawn cocktail. Yum!

CaMePlaitPas · 03/05/2018 08:32

Meanwhile in Syria...

DeathCap · 03/05/2018 08:33

is it cellulose-y in the way iceberg lettuce is? I cannot eat anything like that, I have IBS and get ill, I cannot eat cucumber, melon, peppers, celery, lettuce, onion

I think I will give it a missSmile

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 08:35

No its quite smoothe - you spoon it out if the shell and it's quite soft so you can squish it with a fork. No fibres at all. I can't see it being an issue.

SockQueen · 03/05/2018 08:35

Not like lettuce at all. It's soft and very squishy/slimy.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 03/05/2018 08:36

DeathCap

The trick is getting them when they’re perfectly ripe. If they’re not ripe they are firm, tasteless and unpleasant. If they are over ripe they’re squishy and unpleasant. If they are ripe they are the food of the gods. It’s hard to say ‘what they taste like’ (try describing how a tomato tastes) but they are seriously good on their own, with black pepper, on toast with black pepper & a little grated cheese...in salad, in sandwiches, burgers etc. I have one most days. They’re packed with good fats & vitamins etc. But I eat them because I love them.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 08:37

I have yet to find a way to ripen one quickly.

Laiste · 03/05/2018 08:37

Not fibrous. I can't think of any other veg/fruit with a truly similar texture ...

It is just like butter.

Laiste · 03/05/2018 08:39

Fekko i think putting anything near bananas is supposed to speed up the ripening process. Not in the fridge.

Nakedavenger74 · 03/05/2018 08:39

I'm guessing 'Avobar' a 'pop up restaurant dedicated to the awesome avocado' in Soho, London.

Smashed avo with labneh is '9'

They've ticked all the wanky boxes there.
-poo-up
-'smashed'

  • 'awesome'
-'labneh' (you may know it as 'yoghurt')
  • failure to indicate currency.
AsAProfessionalFekko · 03/05/2018 08:39

If you had a problem with fatty food (like gallbladder issues) be careful of eating a huge bowl of it.
