To think Jamie Oliver shouldn't be so smug about getting artificial sweeteners in ribena

He's calling it beautiful that the sugar tax that he campaigned and persuaded the government to implement "a beautiful thing" as ribeana has half the sugar now. But it's still just as sweet as it's been replaced with artifical sweeteners so don't see how its improving anything, could be making it woorse.

Maybe just buy the sugar free version Ribena and add your own sugar?

HoldingTheLineWinston · 02/05/2018 05:25

And now he wants a sugar tax on milkshakes. It's ridiculous. It's not his place to remove freedom of choice from the UK public.

KingHenrysCodpiece · 02/05/2018 05:45

YANBU Ribena is disgusting now. I went out and brought a big bottle, months ago and ended up pouring it all down the sink, tastes completely artificial! I also used to like it with a bit of hot water in winter. Hot sweetners? Yucky. Looking for an alternativeSad

And who made JO the nations food health minister anywayConfusedAngry

TheFaerieQueene · 02/05/2018 05:53

OP. Your thread title really only needed to be

‘Jamie Oliver shouldn’t be so smug’

I agree with everyone - I don’t drink ribena but who is he to influence these sort of changes? He has a degree in what?

Twat.

GreenItWas · 02/05/2018 06:03

Yes everything is chemicals but you can mix chemicals to make compounds that are deadly. Think beyond the simple.

If people had more self control none of this messing about with our food would be necessary.

siblingrevelryagain · 02/05/2018 06:08

I couldn’t disagree more with the vitriol aimed at Jamie Oliver. He has more money than God and could quite easily sit back and not stick his head above the parapet to be shot at, but he does because he feels strongly about children’s health & diet.

He has studied and consulted with experts and what he says makes sense.

Those advocating that we can make our own decisions; we clearly can’t. You only have to look in every playground to see that whatever decisions the nations parents are making are the wrong ones. Kids are getting fatter, adults are getting fatter-it’s not because of artificial sweeteners, it’s because the low-fat rhetoric of the 70’s & 80’s caused us to replace healthy fats with too much sugar, and process everything to within an inch of its life. The pp who talked about those living a long life on bread and dripping etc-that was because they ate real food and wouldn’t have been snacking and would probably have had cake as an occasional treat. We’ve lost sight of what normal eating and normal portions are (I’ll bet most kids in this country have some sort of sugary treat every day; biscuits/choc bar/sugary yoghurt or pud).

A small amount of sweetener in Ribena won’t harm anyone unless they’re drinking it often; so just don’t and there won’t be a problem. Perish the thought we give our kids water to drink.

Actually sweeteners make me poorly, even small amounts. I had bowel issues for years before I realised.

I 100% agree with the sugar tax, what I disagree with is that the full fat products now use sweeteners to compensate. Why not leave them as they are and let people pay extra. Sweeteners are in so much foodstuffs now it's a nightmare.

It's really backwards thinking- we should be trying to reduce the general sweetness of products. Pumping stuff with sweeteners does nothing to reduce the craving.

TheOneWithTheBaby · 02/05/2018 06:15

I've always had the no added sugar Ribena. The bottle I bought most recently tastes different though somehow. If it didn't have sugar before would the recipe still have changed? Is it the sweeteners making it taste weird? It doesn't say anhjing about a new recipe on the bottle and I hadn't made the link.

athingthateveryoneneeds · 02/05/2018 06:27

I welcome the sugar tax. If these sugary drinks taste bad, the manufacturer should sort it. If children don't like the taste, that's good. Every day I see children being fed crap on the way into school and on the way home from school. It's awful. We live in a very "obese" part of the country and many of my DC's classmates are obese. Not just.overweight, but obese. If the parents aren't going to make changes themselves, then maybe the hit to their pockets will force a change. I'd like to see sweets and chocolates taxed to the hilt as well.

Ciao2Roma · 02/05/2018 06:29

Oliver apparently endorsed brexit saying it will be good for the children in this country. lol

Shadow666 · 02/05/2018 06:33

I’m not sure what products have sweeteners in them but they must be fairly easy to avoid by just cutting down on processed food. Homemade food only has in it what we put in it, we don’t need fancy drinks.

People complain that the control is being taken from them but it’s still there.

scaryteacher · 02/05/2018 06:36

Sofa Elderflower cordial with prosecco, topped up with soda water and a squeeze of citrus is lovely.

I rarely drink alcohol due to a platelet problem, don't smoke or do illegal drugs. I do however, like chocolate and sugar in my tea. I bake as well, and cook from scratch every day.

londonrach · 02/05/2018 06:44

Yanbu. Sugar is better than the sweeteners. Im glad im not the only one who hates jamie oliver. I actively avoid anything he does. We were very ill after his italian restaurant

Aethelthryth · 02/05/2018 06:46

What is really irritating about JO is that all the health campaigning is part of creating his own brand, for the purpose of lining his own pockets. He's not a saint; he's built a fortune out of luck (being spotted during filming at the River Cafe where he was basically just an onion chopper) and smug lecturing. His restaurants are all ghastly and the recipe books are padded out with puerile nonsense written in crayon. Nobody needs a recipe for a bacon sandwich.

I agree with whoever said that what needs to be tackled is greed, not the sugar content of products

sandgrown · 02/05/2018 06:47

Why does nobody blame the fact that school children are no longer made to do some sort of PE every day like we were. Schools have sold off playing fields and older children have been able to opt out. My son's school has stopped all year 11 PE in the run up to GCSE exams. As a young teenager I hated freezing on a muddy hockey field but at least I was getting some exercise and I wasn't overweight !

NotAnotherUserName5 · 02/05/2018 06:50

Yanbu. Artificial sweeteners are awful!

Biologifemini · 02/05/2018 06:50

I think Jamie is great for this health campaign. Ribena shouldn’t be drunk a lot regardless of sugars or sweetness. Kids should be habituated to drinking water so they don’t get a sweet tooth.
Diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, painful knees and fatigue are all consequences of a high calorie diet. Something needs to be done.

jnfrrss · 02/05/2018 06:50

I couldn’t disagree more with the vitriol aimed at Jamie Oliver. He has more money than God and could quite easily sit back and not stick his head above the parapet to be shot at, but he does because he

wants a obe / nighood / lordship for his ego.

I personally find it crazy that, despite many attempts over the years to get adults to take responsibility for their health and the risks, it’s reached this ridiculous level - “if you can’t have it responsibly then we will take it away altogether”. Are we a nation of toddlers?

It’s a lot more serious for many people than What am I supposed to have with my elderflower cordial then? (err - water obviously?!).

Some people rely on the availability of drinks containing sufficient levels of sugar - my son is regularly hypoglycaemic and the medical advice we got initially was “give him Ribena”. Of course, they’d already changed the recipe by then making it utterly useless.

But yeah, the millions of people with health issues causing low blood sugar can stuff it because everyone else can’t be trusted to consume in moderation.

afreshnewname · 02/05/2018 06:52

Totally agree reducing the sugar and increasing sweetener is a terrible idea, I'm not sure why he is so pleased with himself but.... having a dig at kids names is unnecessary Hmm it has no relevance to what he is campaigning for it just makes you look like a bully.

Also woorse isn't a word

Tottyandmarchpane1 · 02/05/2018 06:53

At least he is doing something!!! You may all be slim and so may your children but many, many are not. We have to try these initiatives otherwise it is going to get worse and our children will die younger and younger. I won’t drink the new Ribena either but i’m a grown up and i’ll cope.
For the PP who said why does no one blame lack of PE at school - I think many people do but this is about Jamie Oliver and his expertise is food. Plus no amount of exercise is going to keep you slim in isolation, food is a far bigger problem.
To the PP who mentioned Brexit - he voted Remain but said maybe we’d get clearer labelling now I believe (although it’s hard to see the actual story from the junk press who reported it) and maybe we will - do you know that we won’t? He certainly did not say the whole of Brexit will be better for our children.

Tottyandmarchpane1 · 02/05/2018 06:56

Tammy genuine question - can’t you give him a few sweets instead of Ribena when medically necessary?

queribus · 02/05/2018 06:57

He's a great steaming hypocrite. One if his restaurants is currently peddling a dessert with 51g of sugar per portion (daily recommend 30g for adults). Some of his children's desserts have more the sugar Rda for children.
Don't drink squash or fizzy drinks but seems like a lazy target to me.

Ciao2Roma · 02/05/2018 07:00

How is Brexit going to help children from deprived backgrounds eat healthily? What utter crap. Child poverty will be through the roof once we are through with this self destructive brexit.

jnfrrss · 02/05/2018 07:01

Yes he's doing something to line his own pockets and stroke his ego, but it isn't doing any good.

I only posted the names as I assumed they were a joke as so ridiculous, is that you jools?
