To hate the term 'woke'

Seriously annoying. Am I the only one who hates it?

My grandad has been using “woke” for years. He’s from Tennessee. And black.

SmashedMug · 02/05/2018 19:33

Have we had "sharing my truth" and "speaking my truth"? And also, "you do you and I'll do me".

I feel so old.

crunchymint · 02/05/2018 19:53

No it is more white middle aged people using woke in Britain.

ShinyMe · 02/05/2018 19:57

It's right up there with 'clap back', 'burn', 'lit' and 'af'.

Grrrrr.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/05/2018 19:57

I’m not sure that saying you dislike a certain phrase is racist....?

Hoppinggreen · 02/05/2018 21:23

Especially if you have no idea of its origins shirley

Katiepoes · 02/05/2018 21:58

A very young gay (yes relevant) colleague of mine hugged me and told me I was 'so woke' because I can name all the RuPaul winners and finalists and have a frankly strange crush on Sasha Velour and Michelle Visage. I was very flattered once I knew wtf he was on about. Clearly being woke does not take much effort.

Dead - am I the only one now remembering Adrian Mole and his descriptions of things he liked as 'dead good'? (Clearly I am NOT a millennial ha)

MistyMeena · 02/05/2018 22:09

I have never heard it used in that way. But then I don't really know any millennials so that explains it. Everyone I know is either mid 40s or under 15 😀

lavendargreen · 03/05/2018 00:48

@SmashedMug

Have we had "sharing my truth" and "speaking my truth"? And also, "you do you and I'll do me".

'That's my truth' gets on my nerves too.

stopgap · 03/05/2018 01:09

Makes my teeth itch, but the term “welp” sends me into an irritated frenzy.

Brownsocksinabox · 03/05/2018 07:20

Lol white people... You all need to read this book: "Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People about race"

PollyPutTheCoffeeOn · 03/05/2018 07:37

Never knew its origin was in black culture. Or maybe subconsciously i did cos id NEVER say it..

MargaretCavendish · 03/05/2018 07:48

DD (17) and her friends don't use the word except to say what time they stopped sleeping. She says only chavs use it.

I'd a million times rather that my child used trendy slang that I found silly than class slurs - I'll be very ashamed if mine grow up to say 'chav'.

I work with 18-21 year olds and actually find that one of the great joys is watching their own distinct sub-cultures, even if it makes me feel a little old sometimes! They all looked at me with great pity when I didn't know what 'a melt' was...

Wide0penSpace · 03/05/2018 08:28

The teens I know use ‘dead’ to describe something utterly crap. Eg “your creps are dead” (your trainers are unstylish) or if they find something very funny they will announce “I’m dead”.

ScrubTheDecks · 03/05/2018 08:50

When I first started seeing it it was in the context of being politically conscious and used by a lot of grown up black women. Now it seems to have spread on demography and meaning / currency.

thegreylady · 03/05/2018 08:59

Well we don’t have to use it or any of the other modern slang. I don’t ‘get’ wicked or sick being good things. I can’t be racist to dislike a term if you don’t know it is associated with a racial group.
In a way it is just as racist to say we mustn’t criticise because it is AAVE rather than just the slang of the young. Groovy man.

mostdays · 03/05/2018 09:08

I like it. But yanbu to hate it, there are plenty of widely used words and phrases I hate just because!

balsamicbarbara · 03/05/2018 09:19

It's funny how so little changes. Many of you sound just as uncool as my parents' generation moaning about words we used as kids in the 80s. I thought our generation was meant to be cooler than that Wink

goingonabearhunt1 · 03/05/2018 10:36

It may be teenspeak now but pretty sure this has been around for yrs. I've heard plenty of (white) middle age people say it in the past.

goingonabearhunt1 · 03/05/2018 10:38

This thread has been very educational. Thanks everyone, I will now know what some of these words mean (knew most but not all). I'm only 30 but according to my 25 yr old DSis that is way past it Grin)

DairyisClosed · 03/05/2018 10:40

YANBU. I'm surprised that people aren't embarrassed to use it. It always conjures the image of someone who is ignorant AF but doesn't realise it.

Dandeliontea123 · 03/05/2018 10:44

It has its place on social media but I wouldn't say it in real life.

The new use of 'sleeps' irritates me more. '10 sleeps till Christmas' etc. It always sounds so babyish to me.

IAmMumWho · 11/10/2018 21:51

The word 'woke' is only ever used once you have woken up. I live in Britain and I'm 36 and I have never used or heard the word used in any other way. I think UABU.

cushioncovers · 12/10/2018 07:34

It's used in social media a lot but I've never heard it used in RL so it doesn't really bother me. Out of interest op what word do you think should be used instead?

LEMtheoriginal · 12/10/2018 07:38

I need to find the you tube clip
