To hate the term 'woke'

Seriously annoying. Am I the only one who hates it?

OP posts:
hipposarerad · 02/05/2018 11:33

I told someone on twitter that he was so woke it hurt. He was saying things about how autism is on the increase because of mothers being exposed to toxins due to the elite families forcing women into work. Or some such utter balderdash.

BlueSapp · 02/05/2018 11:34

This is stupid, Just use normal words and here's a thought, the odd sentence to convey your thoughts.

Tink2007 · 02/05/2018 11:47

I’d never heard of it being used as a type of slang before this thread and already I hate it!

nythbran2 · 02/05/2018 12:02

Was in Primark last night and saw socks with 'woke' and 'g.o.a.t' on. Wish I'd invested in them now.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/05/2018 12:20

Why hate it? It is a language and way of communicating amongst certain groups and sometimes demographics. There's nothing to hate about it but to be fair only on Mumsnet would it be 'hated'. Mumsnet is known to literally everyone else who's not a member as group of raging, hormonal, hysterical harridans.

I clearly don't believe this to be true but I'm not so far stuck up my own arse that I can't see the reasons why some of these words are used.

GerdaLovesLili · 02/05/2018 12:25

Lovenaptime , I know where it came from. That's just another reason why the people I (personally) see using it about themselves on twitter deserve a good slap.

Doesn't it count as cultural (mis)appropriation when self-applied to an upper-middle-class white chap who's only struggle is getting the right kind of artisan-baked bread for his breakfast?

WhalesOfYore · 02/05/2018 15:00

It's a useful synonym for "twattish", e.g. "Wow, you're the most woke person I've ever met" Grin

lavendargreen · 02/05/2018 17:20

I have thought of another one.

All the Feels. Grin

Meaning they are feeling emotional and squishy. Smile

Even Katy Perry, Calvin Harris, Big Sean, and Pharrell Williams (collectively,) had a big hit with 'Don't be Afraid to catch feels......!'

thegreylady · 02/05/2018 17:22

What on Earth is ‘bae’?

lavendargreen · 02/05/2018 17:26

BAE?

'Before anyone else'

It's an acronym for your beloved ...Grin

Happygummibear · 02/05/2018 17:36

Hate that youngsters now say "Jokes"

It's lazy and makes no sense. Drives me mad

Balaboosteh · 02/05/2018 17:54

I thought it was short for Babe!

Beamur · 02/05/2018 17:58

I thought it was short for babe too.
My DD announced yesterday that she hates other kids saying fam' and then asked me what it means Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 02/05/2018 17:59

I have never come across it other than I woke up at 6 o'clock this morning or similar.

DD (17) and her friends don't use the word except to say what time they stopped sleeping. She says only chavs use it.

missmorleyme · 02/05/2018 18:01

Maybe we can cancel salty too "shes so salty" I can remember my sister who is only 5 hrs younger than me say salty in a sentence and having to get her to explain it too me.

missmorleyme · 02/05/2018 18:01

*years not hours 🤬

mimibunz · 02/05/2018 18:02

Hate it and all the new slang words.

IrmaFayLear · 02/05/2018 18:05

I am seriously excited about “woke” being cultural appropriation. Can’t wait for the next supercilious plonker to use the word so I can steam in and inform them that they are actually totally unwoke Halo

bananaramasllama · 02/05/2018 18:11

Excellent post @Lovenaptime I came on to say much the same but you've done it more articulately than I would have!

Not very comfortable hearing what I can only assume are people who are not of colour criticising an important and useful black vernacular word.

It's very deliberately not a grammatical word which is sort of linguistically lovely because its divergence from mainstream grammar is in a way what being 'woke' is all about. It's separating yourself from the accepted truths and ways of being and being aware of what they really entail. The word 'aware' fits into the conventional grammar/language and therefore social system. 'Woke' is a necessary word to signal the departure from that.

It has nothing to do with chemtrails, middle aged people or whatever else has been bandied about.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/05/2018 18:14

Just another thread to express 'hidden' racism and xenophobia. Typical of this site, I've come to find.

IrmaFayLear · 02/05/2018 18:16

Stay woke

cushioncovers · 02/05/2018 18:16

The word doesn't bother me. Just depends how it's used. I would find enlightened much more annoying.

As I've got older I've 'woke up' and realised a lot more things that I just didn't realise was happening years ago so I think it's probably quite an appropriate word to use. 'Become enlightened' seems such a wankery phrase to use imo

The80sweregreat · 02/05/2018 18:19

I used the urban dictionary for this one as never heard of it before ( as slang) makes sense now.

GingerRogers84 · 02/05/2018 18:46

Also 'extra'! I think it's used to describe how over the top someone or something is! Extra what? 😂

Missingstreetlife · 02/05/2018 18:56

It's just youthspeak. Every generation has its own, the parents hate or mock it, then it gets assimilated or dies out and a new lot develops.
