crunchymint · 01/05/2018 21:08

Seriously annoying. Am I the only one who hates it?

OP posts:
TheOriginalEmu · 01/05/2018 22:27

i am shook. or even worse, I am shooketh. makes me want to physically hurt people

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 01/05/2018 22:28

We need an Arseholes Anonymous to send these people to. They are chewing the English language into bits. I know people say language is always changing but COME ON Bae? Woke? My Bad? Go eat? Fuck off.

BertieBotts · 01/05/2018 22:29

I used to be one of the yunguns on MN Grin

I don't really understand lit or shook either. And when somebody posts a picture with the caption "I'm screaming" I can't tell if it means they are freaked out or find something so hilarious that they are screaming with laughter.

WhatsGoingOnEh · 01/05/2018 22:30

I find out all the latest words from my teenager. I'm not a fan of "woke" but I quite like "lit".

"Sick" is the one I've never really liked, but youngsters use it so naturally.

I felt old for the first time today when my DC made a joke that referenced a song I'd never ever heard. I used to understand all their cultural references. 😩

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 01/05/2018 22:32

I can remember being young in the 90's and getting irritated by 'Dude' and 'Bitchin' It's not a young thing. It's a twat thing.

SparklyLeprechaun · 01/05/2018 22:33

Never heard of it, it makes me glad I'm old.

HappyLollipop · 01/05/2018 22:34

It's not for you to like it's for the young kids it's normal for slang to evolve, when I was at school everything was 'peak' Grin words like woke and lit are this generations slang, I can't get worked up over this.

Twofurrycats · 01/05/2018 22:38

I mainly hear woke from from conspiracy theorists who are considerably older than millenials. I find 'sheeple' more irritating.

ProzacAndWine · 01/05/2018 22:43

That's what I associate it with, too (and the Nuwaubian Nation fits nicely in their UFO cult crap). You're "woke" when you see past what all the sheeple think is true, past the lies of the establishment etc.

GerdaLovesLili · 01/05/2018 22:45

Anyone who self-identifies on twitter as being "woke" is a prime candidate for instant blocking. It's not a youth thing. There are people having their mid-life crisis and claiming to be woke. Prats.

lalalaloopy · 01/05/2018 22:46

cannot stand “bae” particularly when the couple have only just met & clearly won’t last very long. 🙄

NurseButtercup · 01/05/2018 22:46

I used to be in denial and kid myself that I wasn't one of "those" older people until I was sat amongst a group of young people. I couldn't keep up with the conversation because I had no clue what they were talking about due to the slang they were using e.g.

Young person 1: Michael is a G, but I was triggered when Michael said blah blah, I was dead, seriously I was just dead.

Young person 2: yeah yeah Michael is a G and I used to think he was woke, but naaaa fam, when he said blah blah I was dead.

Nurse buttercup : Confused pretends the entire conversation didn't happen.

Jigglyguff · 01/05/2018 22:47

I can't wait until my girls are teenagers so I can accidently on purpose use slang incorrectly in front of their friends.

lavendargreen · 01/05/2018 22:47

Yeah SICK to describe something great is an odd one!

Like a few others on here, I cannot get worked up about it either. I don't mind it at all.

As some have said, it's language evolving.

SHADY is another one, and MY BAD, but I feel they may have been around for a decade or 2!

People used to say 'groovy baby' and 'it's a gas' and 'be cool man!' back in the 1970's, I bet the old farts of the time (people born before 1930,) used to complain about that then too! Grin

Beamur · 01/05/2018 22:53

I love the dynamism of language and it is a really useful way of identifying people to interests or 'tribes' (not necessarily in a bad or judgemental way) these are verbal/linguistic tics - but they also deliberately serve to include/exclude people. MN uses lots of phrases and codes.
Woke is annoying though as it assumes a moral high ground and infers everyone outside of that 'enlightenment' is figuratively asleep, i.e stupid or yet to realise.

PinguDance · 01/05/2018 23:20

well if you don’t like the term woke you can cheer yourself up by reminding anyone who uses it sincerely that if you were truly woke you wouldn’t use it if you are white as it’s (debatably) appropriating US black vernacular. Worth bearing in mind that a lot of the words mentioned on this thread eg. shook, bae are also words that have the same issues attached. So you’ll have to decide if you don’t like bae cos your a racist or beacuae it’s cultural appropriation. Good luck everyone!

PinguDance · 01/05/2018 23:22

Also that’s a semi ironic post above but it is an interesting area if your Interested in the politics of language

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 01/05/2018 23:40

I work with a millenial, I need simultaneous translation...

I do associate Woke (or it's more extreme pal, WokeAF)with middle aged conspiracy nuts though.

FASH84 · 01/05/2018 23:59

I hate it.

lalalaloopy · 02/05/2018 06:09

I’m sure when I was growing up “g” used to mean gangsta. I still use shady & cool #awks!

Redcrayons · 02/05/2018 06:15

I can't wait until my girls are teenagers so I can accidently on purpose use slang incorrectly in front of their friends

This is indeed one of life's greatest pleasures.

Ski40 · 02/05/2018 06:24

Ah yes, shook, woke, lit, legit, bae.
Can't be on Instagram five minutes without all this bizarre new lingo.
Also the overuse of bitch all over the place.
Or the infamous "I can't even". You can't even what? Finish a damn sentence? Indeed...
Oh and my top of the list -yuk: "being so extra". Hmm

Ski40 · 02/05/2018 06:25

@Redcrayons hehe 😆

Hoppinggreen · 02/05/2018 07:50

red if you can get quite a few into the same sentence they especially like it
“So bae was legit woke and we got so lit I was shook and now I can’t even, I’m dead”

RadicalFern · 02/05/2018 08:03

Woke and shook are buzzfeed headline staples. They drive me up the wall (and I definitely count as a millennial).
