Seriously annoying. Am I the only one who hates it?

OP posts:
cheminotte · 01/05/2018 21:55

My jeans are woke ad is brilliant!

Midthreademergencynamechange · 01/05/2018 21:57

Virtue signalling is my no. 1 most hated phrase of all time Grin.

MaisyPops · 01/05/2018 21:57

I like the idea of using it to mean virtue signalling PITA
Yes!!
Or to steal an idea from someone on another thread, the type of person who will tell you buying a nestle chocolate bar is the most unethical choice, will destroy humanity and cause the planet to die... whilst happily smoking a spliff.

Chocmallows · 01/05/2018 21:58

Had to look bae up - is 'best at everything'?

I find IKR - I know, right - Annoying too.

WhalesOfYore · 01/05/2018 21:58

I like the idea of using it to mean virtue signalling PITA.

Yep. Or to use just one word, simply "indoctrinated".

DickensianHysteric · 01/05/2018 21:58

I quite like it, but I would never use it to describe myself or anyone else as I'd sound ridiculous. I find language and how it evolves quite fascinating, so I like seeing how other people use new terms. My favourite recent examples of woke:

To hate the term 'woke'
To hate the term 'woke'
Pumpkintopf · 01/05/2018 21:59

Love the advert.

Petalflowers · 01/05/2018 21:59

I feel,old!

Oysterbabe · 01/05/2018 22:00

I'm officially old, never even heard of this one.

lavendargreen · 01/05/2018 22:01

Every weird phrase and word that is being mentioned on here is everything people under 25 use. Lit, woke, shook, bae, legit.

I never hear anyone 25-30+ say it. If I did, I would think they were an utter twat.

HowsAnnie25 · 01/05/2018 22:02

Bae means Before Anyone Else ie your number one.
I find all these new phrases an amusing way to annoy my teenage son, I love his eye rolls

RatRolyPoly · 01/05/2018 22:06

"On fleek" is the one I can't abide.

WingsOnMyBoots · 01/05/2018 22:08

It's official - I am old and I only associate with old people!

ProzacAndWine · 01/05/2018 22:09

It just makes me think of the Nuwaubian Nation - that's at least the first context in which I ever heard it of. Doesn't exactly tempt me to like it...

Arborea · 01/05/2018 22:09

Would someone please explain 'shook'? I only know it in the old gimmer, 'All Shook Up' sense.

Chewbecca · 01/05/2018 22:09

I've never seen it in that context. Maybe you need new friends?

DrowningEveryDay · 01/05/2018 22:10

ThroughThickAndThin01

It's millenial slang for "enlightened".

duckingfisaster · 01/05/2018 22:12

I hate it too, although the use of the word in the modern context coming out of someones mouth (or more likely social media feed) is a very good barometer for just how much of a self-absorbed, puffed up prick someone is, so quite handy really for avoidance purposes!

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 01/05/2018 22:14

'Dead' for 'seriously' or 'very' has been around for ages (certainly since my long-ago youth though I'm not as old as my username might suggest), just not in that sentence position.

This will help old people Im early 40s like me!

SmashedMug · 01/05/2018 22:16

I've a new one I dislike too. When (online) people post a picture and say "a mood". I don't know why but it makes me feel itchy.

And bae is used interchangeably with people's names so they'll say things like "I'll just ring bae and see where he is". Irritating Grin

RubyFlint · 01/05/2018 22:20

Where have I been? I haven't heard of any of these new words.

LaurieMarlow · 01/05/2018 22:21

A lot of the words mentioned on this thread are the words of the youth of today. Maybe try and accept that. Language moves on

Mumsnet really struggles with this. Not sure why.

Dahlietta · 01/05/2018 22:25

I disagree, I can't imagine the true pearl clutchers would have even heard the word.
MissBax has it. I'm a pearl clutcher and I have never heard it used in this sense.

lavendargreen · 01/05/2018 22:26

@arborea

SHOOK;

It means someone or something has left you hot and bothered or it has made you shake in either excitement, fear, or anger.

They are mostly self explanatory...

Legit literally means legitimate, stay woke means 'stay awake and alert'

LIT means intoxicated and excited -like LIT up.

Hey, check me down with the kids haha.! Smile

I did not know BAE means 'before anyone else' though... I thought it was just a kind of slang way of saying 'babe..' (Thanks @howsannie25 )
