To hate the term 'woke'

Seriously annoying. Am I the only one who hates it?

Just seen it’s of African American origin to say that you have become aware of a social injustice issue. I can just about cope with it as a verb but not a noun. Ironic really then that people who claim to be “woke” are probably guilty of cultural appropriation lol

MissBax · 01/05/2018 21:29

Agreed.

My biggest pet peeve at the moment is "legit" used in a way that makes no sense.

Have also seen the word "dead" used meaning "seriously" or something. Ie - 'I dead found that funny'

Arghhhhhhhh!!!! Just NO!!

Neolara · 01/05/2018 21:31

But what does it mean? Please take pity on an old gimmer and someone explain.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/05/2018 21:31

Hard to tell. I've yet to hear it/read it anywhere that isn't shoehorned self-consciously into a sentence. 'Meh' is probably as grating, to be fair.

Redcrayons · 01/05/2018 21:35

I'm not entirely sure what it means, i don't come across it in my everyday life though. It's a social media young person thing.

also don't like 'as if' used in a strange context 'as if you just put that photo online'. Does it mean they did, they didn't or what

Sparklesocks · 01/05/2018 21:35

Meh, language is constantly evolving and words change meaning and usage all the time.

If people like to use words that I don’t (inoffensive ones at least) i don’t let it get to me.

goingonabearhunt1 · 01/05/2018 21:35

I've only heard it said as a joke to describe others as a pp said (have heard my parents say this so it's not new) Are ppl actually describing themselves as 'woke'? now?

ClopChops · 01/05/2018 21:36

I think it’s quite a good phrase to describe some particularly irritating virtue signallers ie Owen Jones

LittleMysPonytail · 01/05/2018 21:37

I think it’s just daft and I usually enjoy a bit of wordplay. They mean ‘enlightened’ and that’s such a fabulous word, why on earth wouldn’t you just use that?!

CheeseandGherkins · 01/05/2018 21:39

You can just see the middle class pearls on this thread from a mile off Grin

crunchymint · 01/05/2018 21:40

I have explained earlier on the thread what it means. And yes I see people using it on social media.

MissBax · 01/05/2018 21:41

CheeseandGherkins

I disagree, I can't imagine the true pearl clutchers would have even heard the word.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 01/05/2018 21:41

YANBU. Usually used by flat-earther-anti-vax-the-government-are-poisoning-us-with-chemtrails conspiracy freaks in my experience

This. Exactly this.

VerbenaBorensis · 01/05/2018 21:44

Does it mean 'Ive just realised'? but in short form-awful if it's that plus can't stand 'my bad'.Each generation has its own terms but the current ones seem worse somehow or am I sounding like an old gitness (means git+princess=female git-new phrase-do ya fink it will catch on?! )Grin

Butchmanda · 01/05/2018 21:46

Shoot me now. I've never heard of that. Yet I hate it already. It hasn't reached my teen DS, but it's probably only a question of time. Get wrecked ....

LyingLowForABit · 01/05/2018 21:46

Chemtrailers are really fucking stupid usually. I had to eat one, once. It was her or the coconuts and I liked them for decorative effect.

Anyway the Isle of Wight ferry turned up in the end.

DJLippy · 01/05/2018 21:47

It's overused. Vogue say it's woke. Vogue isn't woke - I don't think they know what that word means. It's a socialist term which means that you are aware of the power relations in society (i.e. bourgeois and workers) It doesn't mean you have blue hair and like Beyonce.

IrisAtwood · 01/05/2018 21:47

I don’t like it either.

Sharpcattlegridheavyhat · 01/05/2018 21:48

‘Lit’ is another one

CheeseandGherkins · 01/05/2018 21:49

MissBax as evidenced by most of the thread not having a clue what it even means until being told

IrisAtwood · 01/05/2018 21:49

I like the idea of using it to mean virtue signalling PITA.

SmashedMug · 01/05/2018 21:49

Oh god yes "lit" is so annoying.

CrustyCob · 01/05/2018 21:50

I am so, not woke, to "woke".
Unwoken even.

CheeseandGherkins · 01/05/2018 21:52

A lot of the words mentioned on this thread are the words of the youth of today. Maybe try and accept that. Language moves on, and the words we used when younger, were probably thought of in the same way by our parents.

It's natural in a society.
