AIBU to not want my DS to have this hairstyle?

7 yr DS wants to have streaks razored into the side of his hair, like the footballers have. I can't stand it on young kids - plus I hate buying into that celebrity/sport bullshit culture.

I don't want him to have it. He's going to push for it.

Let him get it done during the summer holidays. What’s the big deal?

Flippetydip · 01/05/2018 16:58

It looks totally chavtastic so no, I wouldn't be agreeing to it. (I will now hide this thread).

Aprilmightbemynewname · 01/05/2018 16:59

How about allowing it at the start of school summer hols?
Bet grown out by September for the 'back to school haircut'!!

I don’t know, I don’t see the harm if it’s only for the summer holidays like alexand said.

Girls in general seem to have so many more options when it comes to hair, not only are there more styles it can be cut into but they can also do more with it - up, down, ponytails, plaits, bun, beads & braids or if they have short hair colourful hair accessories etc.

Presumably your son has shortish hair due to school rules so this is the only “ fun” he can have with his hair really.

vandrew4 · 01/05/2018 17:00

I think it looks really scrotey on young kids ( along with mohawks, lots of gel etc.) so no, i wouldn't let mine have it, holidays or not

angryburd · 01/05/2018 17:01

Why can't he have it done over the summer is if his school won't allow it? What harm can it possibly do?

Branleuse · 01/05/2018 17:01

my daughter had this about age 8. Some sort of patten shaved into the side of her hair.

I wasnt keen, but its her hair not mine and it soon grew out

Rachie1973 · 01/05/2018 17:03

I let mine do it in the summer holidays, my blonde 16 year old has hers dip dyed all sorts of colours every summer holiday since she was about 9 or so. Then we just trim it out before school starts.

Its just hair, it grows back, particularly from this length very quickly.

MarklahMarklah · 01/05/2018 17:03

If it was over the summer holidays I couldn't get worked up about it.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/05/2018 17:03

I personally don't like the look but it is only hair, and it's his hair. It'll grow out

All the people saying it looks shit, that's just because it's not a style aimed to appeal to middle aged women (who I bet have all had some hilariously shit hair styles over the years)

Plumsofwrath · 01/05/2018 17:05

A 7yo shouldn’t be thinking about their hair this much.

Tell him that when he can play football as well as whichever player he’s emulating, he can get the cut. Otherwise he’s just masquerading, and that’s cheap.

EB123 · 01/05/2018 17:05

I'd let him have it over the summer. I let my boys choose their own hair styles, 7 year old has his long, 5 year old has his short.

rednsparkley · 01/05/2018 17:05

I let mine do whatever they want to their hair, it's never bothered me. They have to take into account school rules but they've had patterns from about 8 and colours from 12. I have boys and girls - only the boys have tried out some more exotic looks so far.

If it all went wrong they all know their head would get shaved and they could start from scratch Grin

elderflowerandrose · 01/05/2018 17:06

Just say no. No need to pick your battles when he is 7 years old! 17 maybe..

formerbabe · 01/05/2018 17:06

Usually the line trotted out on these boards is that it's their hair and their choice, especially when it comes to girls wanting their hair cut.

The difference on this thread is interesting and I suspect because the majority of posters see a hair cut like this as being common.

MayFayner · 01/05/2018 17:06

If it's allowed in school then I would let him. Not a special trip to the barber though, just whenever the next one is due.

We might think it looks terrible, but it's how he feels about himself that matters.

caringiscreepy · 01/05/2018 17:08

hungryhungryhippo8 · 01/05/2018 17:09

I think I would in the holidays but I'd completely hate it.

no, not this. he's SEVEN. It's never all about what he wants.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/05/2018 17:10

“You can have it when you’re 8”*

*this won’t work if he turns 8 in six weeks or something

angryburd · 01/05/2018 17:10

@plums Jesus Christ, he's only asking for a bloody haircut, not a Mercedes-Benz and a Rolex watch.

100%. It's his hair - if it will make him feel good about himself, great. It will have grown back before September if you do it in July.

Thats bollocks.

angryburd · 01/05/2018 17:12

Seriously can't get over how dramatic this thread is. It's HAIR. Some of you sound like total control freaks. He's not asking for anything dangerous, offensive, or even particularly expensive. He just wants a haircut.
