I knew i'd 'made it' in life when

i realised 90% of the plant pots in my house/garden are terracotta, not plastic. I used to dream of this and have added to my collection year on year. I now feel immense pride in the quality of my plant pots! AIBU to ask what small/insignificant things signify to you that you too have made it in life? (Not interested in metal cans on wheels/dwelling structures made of bricks or stone/jewellery/trophy partners Grin).

Buying a cut glass decanter and filling it with pink gin HaloGin

I had the gravy boat moment too. It was fairly cheap and from Sainsburys but it was a momentous day.

Also, having a well furnished handbag with things grown ups need - I love being able to produce a tissue/pen and notebook/paracetamol/comb/mint/mirror/spare tampax if asked!

When a kitchen designer turned up at my house and asked ME what I wanted. I got to choose everything, even the taps and handles. ‘‘Twas amazing.

i realised i love my large dining table and chairs (and dont covet new ones online), have special sunday roast dishes for all my food and have family members "stopping by" when they know we are eating on a sunday so they get offered a plate :). still never gets boring.

TheActualFuck · 30/04/2018 21:52

sweenytoddsrazor that must make me a really sad bastard. You've never seen anyone as excited as me when DH bought me a cordless stain just for the upstairs. It lives in the airing cupboard and I get irrationally happy every time I go in a get it out Grin

When I realised I bought enough stuff from John Lewis & Waitrose to justify having loyalty cards for both.

I used to wonder who shopped there...

HolyShmoly · 30/04/2018 21:52

When we bought our house I realised I was actually a grown-up and could fulfil my ultimate 'when I'm a grown up' plan of buying fresh flowers regularly.
I have a £20 per month budget which is more than sufficient to keep vases full of lovely fresh flowers and cheers me up no end.

Schmoochypoos · 30/04/2018 21:53

Also, buying multipack cans of fizzy pop to keep in the larder who the duck has a larder! for when people pop in unannounced. Keep so much better than the big bottles

When I was a student, one of my part time / summer jobs was working behind the bar at the local hotel, golf and country club. It was always considered to be uber-posh by us locals (most people had never set foot inside, or even on the grounds).

30 years later, I was visiting family at short notice and it was the only place that had rooms available. I stayed in their best, most expensive suite. It was weird being back. The place held many happy memories for me from my student days but my most all-consuming thought was how proud my (late) mother would be and that she'd think I'd "made it" by being able to afford to stay there. It felt like even if I didn't do anything further with my life, I'd done enough by being able to afford to stay there! I had truly made it.

I should point that this posh hotel is actually only 3 stars. But that seemed posh when I was growing up! As for my fancy suite, it had beautiful views but was freezing cold (I had to complain to get them to put the heating on) and the shower didn't work so I had to have a bath...in the avocado coloured sunken bath. Wink

Ellie56 · 30/04/2018 22:00

Not sure whether this counts or not, but after we bought loads of plants for the garden, a new lawn mower and some state of the art garden tools, I realised that not only were we grown ups, but somewhere along the way we had turned into my parents...

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 30/04/2018 22:00

Being able to buy things without checking my bank account first

missymillsysmum · 30/04/2018 22:03

When I changed the toaster and kettle just because I wanted them to match and they weren't even broken !!

Em308 · 30/04/2018 22:04

Owning a water butt, more about feeling grown up than having "made it".
