i realised 90% of the plant pots in my house/garden are terracotta, not plastic. I used to dream of this and have added to my collection year on year. I now feel immense pride in the quality of my plant pots! AIBU to ask what small/insignificant things signify to you that you too have made it in life? (Not interested in metal cans on wheels/dwelling structures made of bricks or stone/jewellery/trophy partners Grin).

The moment I hired a cleaner. And more recently when booking a holiday and upgrading both flights and cabin on our cruise...

mammmamia · 01/05/2018 12:49

Sorry to keep derailing about the mug drawer, but it’s becuaee my kitchen doesn’t have any wall cupboards!
Also all the mugs are mismatching and a lot of them were free or from Easter eggs Grin

Bexter801 · 01/05/2018 12:52

None of my mugs match, free with jars of coffee, and Easter eggs, few obtained when found randomly out shopping

mammynowanauntyIRL · 01/05/2018 12:52

I've decided I will have a mug drawer in my next house. I don't drink tea/coffee and when we first moved in to our current house had 3 each of 2 colours on a mug tree, then H started gathering gift mugs and free mugs and now they sprawl all over countertop and in a cupboard also.

The drawer will be like something in a hotel, pull it out and it'll have teaspoons, coffee, tea and mugs!

mammmamia · 01/05/2018 12:55

Yes! I keep the nespresso capsules in there as well!

muffyduffster · 01/05/2018 13:05

When I bought my London flat in 2011 (well, 85% Santander's flat and 15% mine!) and closed the front door and did a little wiggle of joy... Someone had said to me that closing the front door on your own place was different, and they were right!

Jamiefraserskilt · 01/05/2018 13:15

When I bought my first set of readymade curtains, mega expensive, instead of making them myself.
Oh, and minor thrill when I bought my first new ironing board a few weeks ago to replace the handmedown I have used since I was eighteen.

I don't think I'll feel like I'll have really made it until I own a Chateau in France (we avidly watch escape to the Chateau DIY) but owning my own mitre saw (big electric circular saw) was definitely something. I've used it for all sorts of DIY including creating external secondary glazing for stained glass window that cost me £200 in wood and glass but I was quoted £3500 by professionals to do.

WeirdCatLady · 01/05/2018 13:43

We are very close to paying off our mortgage. I’m doing a masters degree for fun.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 01/05/2018 14:32

I'm beginning to feel a bit 'grown up', like a PP, I have furnished our new house with 'proper' furniture (all beautiful honey coloured vintage teak pieces) and have a matching vintage sofa suite.

I also have my very own not-for-sharing wardrobe for the first time since being a teen! It's a things of beauty, so organised, I even splashed out on matching hangers for everything!

Ladygaggia · 01/05/2018 15:43

When we asked our friends to stay for an impromptu dinner and I was able to whip up food for 11 people without a mad dash to Tesco.

All thanks to a chest freezer, a well stocked larder and an extending dining table.

Made me feel happy.

NeverTwerkNaked · 01/05/2018 17:44

This thread started off being about some of the lovely “little things” that make us feel good in life but some of the later posts are seriously materialistic/ twatty.

On a soppy note - being able to take in my nieces and nephew when they needed it, watching them and my children growing up and seeing my teenagers beginning to become amazing young adults makes me feel incredibly lucky and grateful for my circumstances.

On a more materialistic note - I've got my dream house with a big old farmhouse kitchen and freestanding baths and enough land for growing lots of fruit and veg and for the kids to run about wild and for horses and chickens and all the other animals I've wanted and I don't think I'm ever going to stop wanting to jump for joy every time I think about it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 01/05/2018 18:31

Our moment came recently when we bought decent bookcases that will withstand a tornado and got rid of our white MDF ones that threatened to topple over if you looked at them.

Cellardoor23 · 01/05/2018 18:40

Buying my king sized bed at the beginning of the year and getting excited about buying a new duvet cover For years I had a double, but what a difference! Kind of wish I went for a super king now.

Having a ground coffee machine.

Owning my flat. Not a house I want to live in forever, but I like the security that it's mine.

Cellardoor23 · 01/05/2018 18:45

Just remembered another one. My book shelf Blush I don't have many on it, but I enjoy reading when I get the chance.

CatFlop · 01/05/2018 19:00

I totally understand the pots thing OP - I've got a pic of me gardening with a wooden spoon on my balcony as a student, I didn't have any tools - or a garden... Getting an actual spade and some (still rented) ground to stick it in was it for me, makes me very happy Smile

Polkadot1974 · 01/05/2018 19:46

I want a king size bed and buying one would make me feel grown up as we’ve always had the same double as it was cheap (ex display I had to dismantle myself when MFI shut!) and second hand mattress from a great aunt

KTCluck · 01/05/2018 21:00

Another one who made it the day I bought a gravy boat it’s too small for the copious amounts of gravy we consume so we still use the Pyrex jug

Also, when we had a New Year’s Eve party and I had enough matching Asda prosecco glasses for everyone, while my collection of mismatched stolen shot glasses stayed in the cupboard

CheerfulMuddler · 01/05/2018 21:22

When I finally had all my books under one roof and enough bookcase space for all of them.

bimbobaggins · 01/05/2018 21:25

Are you the thread police never

Toomanynamestoremember · 01/05/2018 21:42

Buying my own good quality lace bras and knickers. When I was a teenager, I wore plain cotton or cheap stuff, as it felt somewhat decadent/indulgent to splurge on luxury underwear. I now use the excuse of 34G bust to properly treat myself and do not feel guilty about it in the slightest.

Haven’t got to the stage of a complete expensive cutlery set or perfectly matching crockery yet, let alone the furniture we exclusively picked ourselves. One day 🙂

SheilaHammond · 01/05/2018 21:51

Bought John Lewis teatowels. They don’t go weird shapes in the wash like the ones from the market. (I was 49).

chestylarue52 · 01/05/2018 22:02

I got a company car
