MIL opened my birthday present

It's my birthday and I had a small get together with family. An aunt gave a present to MIL to give me as she couldn't make it. MIL opened both the present and the card before she came. I know because she told me. And anyway you could tell they had been opened and resealed.

WTF?

I didn't say anything tonight because I didn't want to cause a scene. I now wish I'd said something. Is it too late?

@Abbylee thats so sad, did you ever ask why she took the spoons or glass? I hope you now dont let her in your house unsupervised!

starlight13 · 30/04/2018 22:36

@Littlemia yes, she was terminally ill and told she had just a day. She held on for a further week and said on the day of my birthday 'yes this is the day i've been waiting for' :(

Ah! Again, with greatest respect for your feelings, that’s certainly tenacity for you!!

I’m seeing my mil so much more favourably !

starlight.
Wow. That was a parting shot from your mil. Shock
I hope that backfired on her. Not that she’s around to see it.

Abbylee
Flowers. My mother (not mil) has also done outrageous things like this to me.

I'm starting to feel bad about complaining about my MIL with her idiosyncrasies. She at least has always meant well, unlike some of the examples here. I just pity a woman like Starlight's MIL who is so full of hatred that she actually goes to the effort of making sure she dies on her DIL's birthday, just to spite her. She must have been very hard to put up with. Sad

Don’t think I would have been able to help myself, would have blurted something out like “would you like to open the rest of my presents now then?”

cocktailsausages · 01/05/2018 19:51

starlight13 Wow Starlight, just wow.

Maraudersmap1 I wish I'd thought to. I'm one of those people that always thinks afterwards "I should have said that!"

Baffling behaviour but I think it is best just to laugh it off and not get bogged down about it.
