DH wants a Range Rover (somewhat lighthearted)

DH is in the market for a new car and has seen a Range Rover in the garage down the road. It’s very expensive obviously and much more than what we could afford.

Yet he keeps banging on about it and he’s been talking about how much he wants one for ages. He talks about how cheap the tax and insurance is so he’s already investigated it Hmm

We have 2 young dc, I’m on maternity leave, we earn average salaries, live in an average house.

AIBU to keep telling him to forget it. How can I get him to forget this pipe dream?!

RR Evoque on a 63 plate with 40k miles for £500 deposit and £349 per month

Blimey, that's only a couple of hundred quid shy of what I paid for my last two cars. Shock

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 13:36

@Madbengalmum

Rare to see so much BS in one post.

Why have two new Range Rovers when you hate them so much? No job forces a car on you of a specific type; especially the level where you have something like a Range Rover.

If you can't park a vehicle with 360 cameras and sensors then you shouldn't be on the road at all.

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 13:45

inTIRFace, thankyou for your oh so charming post!

What is bullshit about my comment? I had two RR's, NOT company cars, we had to buy them!!!! (so not sure where your comments come?) And believe it or not 360 cameras or not, its still a fucking big peice of metal to get into ANY car parking space! And we had one each, hence two!

However, thankyou very much for your useless diatribe.

TeisanLap · 26/04/2018 13:52

DH is seriously considering a Landcruiser next time , but I don’t know if that’s going to be any better

I’ve driven LC’s since the late 70’s but I recently Bought a Vogue just for a change. Ive use the latter for many a camping trip and cross desert safari just as I used the LC. I’ve had no trouble with either car. I think a RR is a good swap for a LC and vice versa.

Five of us in the family drive a RR whilst two of us also have a LC as a second car. One son though always has a LC and has just taken delivery of his 3rd one. His second car is a Pajero. Another one has another Toyota 4x4 I can’t remember the name of.

I think there’s nothing between Toyota and RR to be honest and it’s all down to personal choice.

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 13:52

You chose to buy two. If you hated them so much but still bought them you're an idiot.

Dependinging on how you measure it, it's the smallest vehicle we own but by far the easiest to park

197″ L x 78″ W x 72 H - RR
198″ L x 76″ W x 55 H - other #1
203" x 208" W x 73" (a good 1' added now) - other #2

LaurieMarlow · 26/04/2018 13:57

My first thought is that buying a RR indicates a total lack of financial savvy (even if the person in question is relatively rich).

So while I stand up for people's right to waste their cash how they like, RR buyers strike me as not the sharpest tools in the box.

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 14:03

inTIRFace, wow you are a charmer aren't you!

o you've never bought something you went on to dislike?

I've had tons of cars I didn't like to live with. I sold them, and moved on, end of story.

Why you feel it acceptable to be rude and insulting Is another story!

CocoaGin · 26/04/2018 14:11

We've got an Evoque and it's fab. So comfy for long journeys and fuel economy not too bad at around 38mpg. It also drives really well, we've done a LR off road course that comes with a new one - very good to know what all the buttons do and how to drive it properly on and off road. Brilliant day out/birthday gift if you have one near you.
We do live rurally, and it came into its own with the bad weather this spring. DH could get to work when he's usually stuck at home. We lease ours through his business and it only needs a service every 2 years and tyres seem to last well. Depends on your driving style and mileage though I would imagine Grin

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 14:32

@Madbengalmum

"You've never bought something you went on to dislike? "

Not twice. That would make me an idiot.

"I've had tons of cars I didn't like to live with. I sold them, and moved on"

This would also make me an idiot.

We test drove and then rented a Range Rover for a month before buying our first. It's a lot of money to waste if you don't like it.

I rented a 6 Series before buying my M6 for the same reason.

We spoke to a lot of owners of our pick up before buying it. We sought a lot of advice before modifying it.

I believe these actions are called due diligence. Wealth has nothing to do with any of this. It is about intellect.

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 14:49

inTIRace, do you even read before you spout your nonsense?
Thought not.

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 14:58

badbengalmum

Yes.

ShotsFired · 26/04/2018 15:04

@LaurieMarlow My first thought is that buying a RR indicates a total lack of financial savvy (even if the person in question is relatively rich).

OH and I were marvelling at the possible cost of the incredibly flash Overfinch Rangie in front of us last week, when we turned off at the junction only to come up behind another one a short while later!

I imagine the two owners must move in similar circles, but I'd be gutted to spunk so much money and then find out someone else already had one!

(Overfinch being the kings of customised Range Rovers for massive amounts of money)

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 15:15

I don't think so @ShotsFired.

I have a rare and expensive car. If I see another one I simply think that the other person is as awesome as I am.

The fact that you think you're buying exclusivity says a lot about you.

You aren't buying anything that someone else with the same cash can't.

The fact you recognise an Overfinch RR means you're already part of a certain group. The same if you spot an Alpina or Brabus or C63 or my M6.

RoadToRivendell · 26/04/2018 15:33

We've just had a omparably expensive car stolen from right out in front of our house for the second time in four years.

Thieves love RRs.

TeisanLap · 26/04/2018 16:16

Thieves love RRs

Thank god someone else does 😂😂😂

Firesuit · 26/04/2018 16:17

I judge anyone driving one as someone who is desperate to show everyone that they've got money.

I assume you think that because that's the only thing about it you would enjoy? I think comments like this say more about the author than they do about anyone else.

(I nearly bought an Evoque four years ago, mostly because I like the look of it. The deciding factor in dropping it wasn't that I couldn't get it with adaptive cruise control.)

twinklefeather · 26/04/2018 16:20

1 in 5 get stolen that’s enough to put me off, wouldn’t risk getting car jacked.

CurcubitaPepo · 26/04/2018 16:44

I worked for JLR a couple of years ago.

I wouldn’t have one.

Apparently 20% of all AA / RAC callouts are for a JLR vehicle, and 17% of new vehicles breakdown in their first year.

And those are the official statistics

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 16:48

Curcubita, exactly our experience. Steering columns seemed to be a particular problem with JLR stuff.

PrancingQueen · 26/04/2018 19:57

InTIRFace: the M6 is hardly the height of exclusivity - there’s a good few of them in my area Hmm
But no doubt you’ll come back with how yours has been hand built by German master craftsmen and plated with platinum Grin
And you need to get over yourself, you sound like a twat.

AgnesSkinner · 26/04/2018 20:26

I was rather put off JLRs when I discovered the original Disco was put together with an assortment of bits from the parts bins. They tended to break down / catch fire too. My boss at the time went through several.

It sounds like OP’s DH is convincing himself that it could be financially doable. It might be, until the first big bill comes in, and then you are driving on tenterhooks listening for odd noises and waiting for the next thing to go wrong. If you can live with that, and can keep it on the road, and enjoy it, then fine. (Not looking at DH’s indulgence at all Hmm)

topcat2014 · 26/04/2018 20:32

My MDs have always had them, wherever I have worked.

We have Range Rover invoices to pay every month :)

Millionairesshortbread1 · 26/04/2018 20:35

I’ve one, not even 2 years old and never out of the dealers with problems. Saying all that, it’s a company car and I love it but would be very unhappy if it was my own. Don’t know if that helps.

TeisanLap · 26/04/2018 21:27

5 in my familiy. No problems whatsoever.

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 26/04/2018 21:40

My 73 FIL has an M6. Not sure what that does to the curb appeal Grin
