DH wants a Range Rover (somewhat lighthearted)

DH is in the market for a new car and has seen a Range Rover in the garage down the road. It’s very expensive obviously and much more than what we could afford.

Yet he keeps banging on about it and he’s been talking about how much he wants one for ages. He talks about how cheap the tax and insurance is so he’s already investigated it Hmm

We have 2 young dc, I’m on maternity leave, we earn average salaries, live in an average house.

AIBU to keep telling him to forget it. How can I get him to forget this pipe dream?!

That's a shame nipers. My landrover fl2 is 10 years old, 120k and has required minimum attention other than the recommended servicing. Apart from my old Golf TDi from my young free and single days, it's the best car I've ever had!

PlausibleSuit · 26/04/2018 08:54

I'd have one, but I like the classic ones like this (pic hopefully attached). There's a sort of raffish elegance to them which I think has been lost in the latest one.

You used to be able to pick up a late Vogue for a few hundred quid. But prices have gone up now; upwards of ten grand. Does that make it an investment?

Regardless, I'd still make friends with an independent specialist, though. And make sure all the nasty things have already gone wrong and been fixed.

I love the classic one too. That's exactly what I want.

BBQsAreSooooOverrated · 26/04/2018 10:05

My friends dh has just leased one, 2k deposit, £350 a month for 4yrs and then he'll still owe 12k on itShock

doodar · 26/04/2018 10:13

we've just sold our old one,5 years old, £58, 000 got £21,000 for it.Our new one is top of the range and comes with 3 years service. i've done 170 miles on a full tank, about £100.was a bugger to get insured too.

Clarabell33 · 26/04/2018 10:14

*@jedenfalls
It just sits on his drive looking expensive *

Wouldn't last long around here! Nice little village on the outskirts of a big city, but crazily high crime rate - purely in stolen cars. Lots of new-build estates with nice cars parked on the drives, and 2+ steal-to-order incidents a month. The sort where they break into your house quite carefully, don't cause much damage and take nothing but the keys to the 4x4 and the sporty 2-seater on the drive. So that's an additional risk/cost factor to think about...

Tentomidnight · 26/04/2018 10:18

If he’s anything like the ubiquitous RR drivers round here he’ll be needing a private plate on it too...

Tentomidnight · 26/04/2018 10:20

And as Clarabelle said, lots of night time breakins as the cars are stolen to order (crime maps are online and several friends have had this happen to them).
Neighbour moans about his wife’s top of the range RR needing constant expensive repairs despite low mileage.

plominoagain · 26/04/2018 10:25

DH treated himself to a Discovery when he retired , but then we were on our third TD5 by that point . The new one he bought is ideal for what we want ( dogs , horses , towing horse trailers ) but is now full of dog hair and horse feed . It’s been a godsend in the winter but my god you do pay for the privilege of having one . £850 for four tyres , for example.

DH is seriously considering a Landcruiser next time , but I don’t know if that’s going to be any better .

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 10:32

Firstly the evoke is a RR by badge only, and thus cannot be compared realistically to a full fat one.
Had two new RR's which both broke down within the first year.
Everyone else on the road will hate you, and nobody ever lets a RR out.
A tank of fuel was around £150
Tax and insurance extortionate, mpg awful, car parking a nightmare.
They depreciate like nothing else. They aren't good for the environment.

The pluses, erm, they look nice and you can go off road.

Save your money OP, sooo no worth it.

BawbagWilbury · 26/04/2018 10:44

We had an older one, a P38, absolutely loved it. Ran it on lpg so fuel costs were better.
Until baby no. 4 came along & we needed a 7 seater
I love land rovers though

BawbagWilbury · 26/04/2018 10:46

Everyone else on the road will hate you, and nobody ever lets a RR out

We had the opposite, must depend where you live

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 10:56

Bawbag, I am suprised. I don't meet many people that actually like RR drivers! There are plenty of them, but generally people tend to think they are knbs, but then alot of them act like knbs!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 26/04/2018 11:01

I can't knock what I haven't tried but is it the vehicle or the image that entrances your DH? I would wonder about mpg and cost of items like tyres.

BlueSapp · 26/04/2018 11:04

I want a Range Rover too, but I'll be having a used one so I can Taylor the price to my budget

BawbagWilbury · 26/04/2018 11:05

We live very remotely, where every other car is some kind of 4x4. Always had folk admiring ours.
City driving is very different to here though. I agree, lots of knobs on the road!

ShotsFired · 26/04/2018 11:28

Whenever I get my head turned by flash new cars, I always do a spot check on the price of the tyres, @cadburyegg. That is a good idea of the scale you're talking...

So, I can shoe my car for about £200 all in (for 4 tyres, all fitted and balanced). I once asked a man in a nice Jag next to me how much one cost and I think it was £200+ each corner....

I was much happier with my motor that day Grin

scaryteacher · 26/04/2018 11:38

Bawbag Ours was a P38 LPG conversion as well. There wasn't much on it that dh couldn't deal with if there was a problem. Sadly when we moved back to Belgium for his civvy job, we had to pay car tax, unlike when he was here with the Forces, and we only had to pay it on mine. The cost of the road tax in euros over the time we are here for the P38 would pay for just over a year of ds's UK uni fees, so it had to go. Would like another one though.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 26/04/2018 11:48

The Evoque are like some kind of badge of honour for people wanting everyone to know they have money.

I sit in a queue on the motorway each morning and I can guarantee the worst drivers who will be looking in their mirror and doing make up or texting will be women in white Evoque's. I hate driving behind them as the people who drive them are so jumpy and brake ridiculously last minute.

I'm hoping people don't think the same about me in my very modest new BMW 118i!

JessicaJonesJacket · 26/04/2018 11:58

MissWilmott then you're not going into fields like the ones we regularly encounter. And tbh, that's not surprising. It's not your job. For work, we have had vans, pick-ups and RRs. I'd choose a RR every time for getting access to difficult to reach places.

PlausibleSuit · 26/04/2018 11:58

Tyres and wheels seem to be a money-maker for lots of brands now, @ShotsFired. My OH's Audi A4 went over a big pothole recently. The tyre punctured and the wheel was dented.

Cost to replace? Over £1,500. For one wheel and one tyre. The tyre alone was over £300. Shock

In contrast, four new tyres for my 13-year-old Saab cost about £350. And that was for the best Continentals that money could buy

JessicaJonesJacket · 26/04/2018 12:00

BlueNeighbourhood I think we see what reinforces our prejudices. Where we live the selfish, inconsiderate drivers are always in BMWs Grin

Madbengalmum · 26/04/2018 12:04

An evoque is nothing to Show off about. Just smacks to me that you can't afford a proper RR!
Would much rather have your BMW, and Ive had two RR's.

user1485342611 · 26/04/2018 12:10

Where do you live? I think Range Rovers look ridiculous being driven around suburbs and towns.

BlueNeighbourhood1 · 26/04/2018 12:25

I drive on one of the major motorways in the North-East every morning so see loads of different cars and attitudes to driving.

The one thing I dislike as a driver and driving behind a RR is the fact I can't see anything infront of me expect the car. It's like having a lorry or van there. But back to the subject, if you can afford it then why not? You only live once!

If you go on LinkedIn I've seen a lease deal today for a RR Evoque on a 63 plate with 40k miles for £500 deposit and £349 per month. Not bad really if you can get a good insurance deal.
