DH wants a Range Rover (somewhat lighthearted)

DH is in the market for a new car and has seen a Range Rover in the garage down the road. It’s very expensive obviously and much more than what we could afford.

Yet he keeps banging on about it and he’s been talking about how much he wants one for ages. He talks about how cheap the tax and insurance is so he’s already investigated it Hmm

We have 2 young dc, I’m on maternity leave, we earn average salaries, live in an average house.

AIBU to keep telling him to forget it. How can I get him to forget this pipe dream?!

You guys have killed my Range Rover dream and I can afford it. :(

bonbonlavie · 25/04/2018 22:19

I picked up a new car a couple of days ago and there was a Range Rover sport in the show room. It was 4 years old and had depreciated by £40,000 in that time.

GothMummy · 25/04/2018 22:25

I want a long wheel base Land Rover "county" with a soft top. I can't afford to run one, so I sympathise with your DH.

glasshalffull2018 · 25/04/2018 22:26

I'd start talking about dream cars you would like, then say maybe in a few years time or if we won the lottery etc, keep an eye on the bank account though just in case

birdladyfromhomealone · 25/04/2018 22:36

we have a RR sport, it just cost us £1500 for a service and £500 for the air con to be regassed,
it does 20mpg and costs us £150 per week in fuel.
But I love it., it feels so safe and so comfortable, glides on air so you dont feel any bump, has heated seats and a fridge for chilling water on the way to the gym, heated seats in winter, DVD player to watch on long journeys.
whats not to love,
had ours two years, costs us loads but what price comfort.

CatchIt · 25/04/2018 23:00

Are you going to tow a trailer? No? Then don't bother. You'll pay £££ for the tax, £££ for MOT's, servicing, tyres etc & £££££££ on fuel.

Personally I think most people who have them as Chelsea Tractors look like twats driving them. Desperately avoiding getting them dirty and shoving other road users onto the verge as they can't possibly drive it on any mud. 🙄

scaryteacher · 25/04/2018 23:25

We had one, which dh serviced; so no costs there apart from parts. He could also deal with any air suspension issues (thank you Black Box) and had software installed on a cheap laptop for diagnostics. It had already had an LPG conversion, so fuel costs weren't an issue. The tyres were General grabbers which seemed to last forever. It trundled off road, towed trailers, and did the Belgium to UK trip for years.

Loved it.

LondonGin · 25/04/2018 23:31

A fridge for chilling water on the way to the gym?!? What’s wrong with taking t from the fridge at home and putting t in your bag? Surely it won’t chill in the time it takes you to drive there. And most cars now come with heated seats at least as an option

JosBoys · 25/04/2018 23:34

DH always wanted a RR. I think life is too short to miss out on fulfilling dreams (if you can afford it).
We've had 3 over the years. Much to my surprise, I loved them. I also found them fine to park and to drive.
Either you can afford it or you can't. If you can afford it, I'd get one. Pay for a warranty or opt for a lease. Otherwise maintenance costs are prohibitive.

Mightybanhammer · 25/04/2018 23:35

Explain to him the difference between a hedgehog and a 4x4.
In a hedgehog the pricks are on the outside. Wink

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 25/04/2018 23:35

The tax is not cheap - he's dreaming! You have to pay a £1000 + first registration tax on them now when new and unless he is looking at some incredibly rare eco engine your tax is going to be £500 +
Compare that to a Mercedes ML 250 with tax at £200 (ish) they truly are a different territory. I've had a Range Rover and the serving is also ridiculous. I do love them but it's not a cheap game.

Flopsymopsycottontailbuns · 25/04/2018 23:36

*servicing

Ollivander84 · 25/04/2018 23:39

Servicing and tyres aren't cheap I work for LR/Jaguar

TeisanLap · 25/04/2018 23:46

You guys have killed my Range Rover dream and I can afford it. sad

Why would you let other people kill your dream?

As for a RR? In my family 5 of us own one, all straight from the factory, and none of us have had a moments trouble with them.

If you want one just get it. Just don’t let the opinion of others kill you dreams. Life really is too short and no one around you, let alone strangers on the internet, should have that power.

HarrietSchulenberg · 26/04/2018 00:12

We all laugh at Range Rovers in this house. Especially white Evoqs that only ever tootle round towns. We don't have expensive cars by any means but RR drivers round here all seem to think they're above normal road and parking laws and if you see a car beached across 3 spaces it's nearly always a RR. The only worse cars are Porsche 4x4s as their owners are terrified of driving them on anything other than tarmac so they won't touch a grass verge when passing in narrow lanes.
I used to have to drive my boss' wife's RR in London and it was just humiliating. I swear that transit vans steer better and they certainly reverse park better (yes, I do have experience of both).

Fatted · 26/04/2018 00:17

Round where I live, the only people who drive Range Rovers are drug dealers.

inTIRFace · 26/04/2018 03:28

We're on our second. We sold the first at 5 years old and this one is 2 now.

Definitely expensive but, as Ferris would say, "It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

We get 20mp/g (4.4 diesel). There's a smaller diesel and a petrol which both do better.

It's incredibly easy to drive. 360 deg camera, park assist, queue assist etc. Extremely comfortable and very safe.

During floods a year or so ago, I really couldn't have given a shit if people thought I was "tryhard" as I drove home knowing I was safe and marvelling at the wing mirror water-depth sensors.

Do do the sums but go for a test drive any way. They're amazing. If I win the lottery I definitely want the long wheelbase version.

Puffycat · 26/04/2018 03:38

The whole land/range rover thing is real!
Those vehicles were made with love and made to be loved!
If you can afford it, let him have it!
It’s a thing of beauty, and you will love too!

Puffycat · 26/04/2018 03:43

Just want to add,
In my youth I had a series 3 short wheel base called Alchemy, and a very racy series 3 ex MOD lightweight V8 called Vivien

Barbaro · 26/04/2018 06:11

Cheap on tax and insurance? Is he having a laugh or is he used to taxing and insuring ferraris? They aren't cheap in the slightest.

Also expensive to fix, expensive to run. I'm guessing the one he's seen is an older model meaning it's probably close to breaking something major. Nah he's in a dream.

GameChanger01 · 26/04/2018 06:24

But surely the RR evoques cant be that bad. There are literally so many all of sudden where I live. Can anyone shed any light on these as I’m looking to get convertible RR evoque.

CanIBuffalo · 26/04/2018 06:28

' Great car' and always 'in the shop' don't compute for me.
I agree with a pp. Work out how much it will cost in total and tell him to get a job that covers the extra.

Scrowy · 26/04/2018 06:30

Apparently they are a pain to get car seats into.

Limoncell0 · 26/04/2018 06:40

So much fuss - it's only a car!! Come to my DC's prep in a London and it's like the cavalcade of RRs! No rough terrain around here apart from Richmond Park Grin but if you have several kids, maybe a dog and prefer being in a higher up position when driving in traffic, why not? I don't have one anymore because I found it a bit too big. Now I have a Land Rover Discovery Sport which is a bit smaller, but still has 7 seats. People buy these cars because they need the 7 seats, that's all. Do you need 7 seats OP? Maybe lease one and then you don't get hit by the depreciation??

BBCK · 26/04/2018 06:49

Had a Discovery for 7 years. ( Better than RR IMO) Absolutely fantastic car for a family. The space and comfort inside is amazing! I think that’s why most people buy them, not for the off-road capability. We drove thousands of miles in ours, including to the South of France several times. No arguments about space in the back from the kids, no backache from driver after a long journey. I don’t think I’ll ever own a more comfortable car. The dealership always treated us very wel indeed, which was just as well as we were there a lot! You need to budget £2000 per year in repair costs and tyres, £100 to fill the tank, £550 on road tax per year. 30 mpg or less unless on a long, flat journey. Parking in your average car park is a nightmare, although other cars always come off worse than yours in any bump 😁. Great cars, but understand what you’re buying.
