AIBU?

DH wants a Range Rover (somewhat lighthearted)

DH is in the market for a new car and has seen a Range Rover in the garage down the road. It’s very expensive obviously and much more than what we could afford.

Yet he keeps banging on about it and he’s been talking about how much he wants one for ages. He talks about how cheap the tax and insurance is so he’s already investigated it Hmm

We have 2 young dc, I’m on maternity leave, we earn average salaries, live in an average house.

AIBU to keep telling him to forget it. How can I get him to forget this pipe dream?!

It's not because I can't afford a 'proper' RR confused it's because I don't need a huge car as it's normally just me in it, I can park it in a normal space and I needed a 4x4 as we live fairly rural and I need to get out for work.

I have no trouble at all either fitting it in to a regular sized parking space.

I have a white evogue - so I gather now I must be a terrible and inconsiderate driver!! I love my car so much - it's so pretty and sporty!! It makes me so happy every time I get in it I couldn't give a monkeys what anyone else things.

For me - the worse people who buy a 2WD evogue, why?!

Doesn’t Clarkson favour the Volvo XC90 over the RR? At least on the basis of it’s a lot harder to nick.

I love RRR

But that's because my job involves ticketing people who can neither park , not appear to understand that traffic rules apply to them, and I can honestly say that so far RR have the highest score in that department !! SO many owners who basically leave them wherever, and usually hanging over two carpark bays
(Chipping Norton is a particularly great town for that, but I haven't come across Jeremy Clarkson yet... only a matter of time...)

I can see the comfort appeal but the they are such a common status symbol round here!

On the other hand I've had mine not for just under 3 years and not one thing has ever gone wrong with it. And as long as your not getting the 3l v6/ autobiography it's not bad at all on the mpg

It is not cheap to insure or tax
It is nice to drive however

My 73 FIL has an M6. Not sure what that does to the curb appeal Grin

I’ve one, not even 2 years old and never out of the dealers with problems. Saying all that, it’s a company car and I love it but would be very unhappy if it was my own. Don’t know if that helps.

My MDs have always had them, wherever I have worked.

We have Range Rover invoices to pay every month :)

I was rather put off JLRs when I discovered the original Disco was put together with an assortment of bits from the parts bins. They tended to break down / catch fire too. My boss at the time went through several.

It sounds like OP’s DH is convincing himself that it could be financially doable. It might be, until the first big bill comes in, and then you are driving on tenterhooks listening for odd noises and waiting for the next thing to go wrong. If you can live with that, and can keep it on the road, and enjoy it, then fine. (Not looking at DH’s indulgence at all Hmm)

InTIRFace: the M6 is hardly the height of exclusivity - there’s a good few of them in my area Hmm
But no doubt you’ll come back with how yours has been hand built by German master craftsmen and plated with platinum Grin
And you need to get over yourself, you sound like a twat.

Curcubita, exactly our experience. Steering columns seemed to be a particular problem with JLR stuff.

CurcubitaPepo · 26/04/2018 16:44

I worked for JLR a couple of years ago.

I wouldn’t have one.

Apparently 20% of all AA / RAC callouts are for a JLR vehicle, and 17% of new vehicles breakdown in their first year.

And those are the official statistics

1 in 5 get stolen that’s enough to put me off, wouldn’t risk getting car jacked.

I judge anyone driving one as someone who is desperate to show everyone that they've got money.

I assume you think that because that's the only thing about it you would enjoy? I think comments like this say more about the author than they do about anyone else.

(I nearly bought an Evoque four years ago, mostly because I like the look of it. The deciding factor in dropping it wasn't that I couldn't get it with adaptive cruise control.)

We've just had a omparably expensive car stolen from right out in front of our house for the second time in four years.

Thieves love RRs.

I don't think so @ShotsFired.

I have a rare and expensive car. If I see another one I simply think that the other person is as awesome as I am.

The fact that you think you're buying exclusivity says a lot about you.

You aren't buying anything that someone else with the same cash can't.

The fact you recognise an Overfinch RR means you're already part of a certain group. The same if you spot an Alpina or Brabus or C63 or my M6.

ShotsFired · 26/04/2018 15:04

@LaurieMarlow My first thought is that buying a RR indicates a total lack of financial savvy (even if the person in question is relatively rich).

OH and I were marvelling at the possible cost of the incredibly flash Overfinch Rangie in front of us last week, when we turned off at the junction only to come up behind another one a short while later!

I imagine the two owners must move in similar circles, but I'd be gutted to spunk so much money and then find out someone else already had one!

(Overfinch being the kings of customised Range Rovers for massive amounts of money)

Thought not.

@Madbengalmum

"You've never bought something you went on to dislike? "

Not twice. That would make me an idiot.

"I've had tons of cars I didn't like to live with. I sold them, and moved on"

This would also make me an idiot.

We test drove and then rented a Range Rover for a month before buying our first. It's a lot of money to waste if you don't like it.

I rented a 6 Series before buying my M6 for the same reason.

We spoke to a lot of owners of our pick up before buying it. We sought a lot of advice before modifying it.

I believe these actions are called due diligence. Wealth has nothing to do with any of this. It is about intellect.

We've got an Evoque and it's fab. So comfy for long journeys and fuel economy not too bad at around 38mpg. It also drives really well, we've done a LR off road course that comes with a new one - very good to know what all the buttons do and how to drive it properly on and off road. Brilliant day out/birthday gift if you have one near you.
We do live rurally, and it came into its own with the bad weather this spring. DH could get to work when he's usually stuck at home. We lease ours through his business and it only needs a service every 2 years and tyres seem to last well. Depends on your driving style and mileage though I would imagine Grin
