Wibu to buy this dress even if I know it won't fit me (yet!)?

Dp and I have finally decided on a wedding date so I'm now looking at wedding dresses!

I've found one that I absolutely love, it is my dream dress. Has all the elements I want and is just generally bloody stunning. It may sound silly but also the dress' 'name' just happens to be that of a very close family member who passed away last year and it feels like a nice way of including her in our day.

The only problem is..its an 'old' dress from 2016 that has now been discontinued so they are not making them anymore. Its unlikely I'm going to be able to go to a bridal shop and try it on to see if it fits my shape and is flattering.

I have found one online, in the UK (quite difficult, most of the ones I've seen online are from America or Australia, which adds £££'s in shipping fees), and its within my price range!!

But its a size 8 and I'm a size 16 Sad

I do want to lose weight (I am trying) and I have over 2 years before the big day but if I don't lose the weight or its unflattering on me then I've just wasted a few hundred pounds that I can't really afford.

Wibu to buy it anyway, given that its a £1700 dress new and is on sale for a fraction of that and just hope that I eventually fit into it? Or would it be a silly waste of money?

I think it would be a bad idea, I don't think I could physically fit in a size 8. I am 5ft 8.

Could you not find a seamstress, maybe they could put a corset back into it? I know when dd was looking at prom dresses they gave that as option to dresses that were too small.

onceanorexic · 24/04/2018 18:29

What they all said, but to emphasise: it might well be simply impossible for you to fit into a size 6/8. My skeleton would not round the hips, I think... having been at the point where the measuring tape was basically stretching in straight lines from bone to bone all round and still giving too high a number! Not beautiful, not healthy, not recommended.

Focus on health, find the right weight for you, and then find the perfect dress.

springmachine · 24/04/2018 18:31

I've been trying to sell my dress that I've decided I just won't shrink down to fit into for the last few months and despite me advertising it everywhere including paid advertising on specialist dress sites, I've not had a snifter of interest.

This is a dress I'm advertising at less than £300, is a size 12, a fahsionable design and would have cost £1800 brand new.

It's going to end up going to charity shop at this rate

Chickychoccyegg · 24/04/2018 18:32

It's a lovely dress, but not unusual, I think you'd be better taking lots of pictures, take the pictures with you when you go to try on dresses and the assistant will help you find something very similar, you may end up not liking it on at all, and it's too much pressure to lose a lot of weight- I lost quite a lot of weight for my wedding, it was a size 8, I'm usually a size 12, but found out 4 months before the wedding I was pregnant(had to literally squeeze myself into the dress on the day after it was taken out as much as possible Smile)

CaviarAndCigarettes · 24/04/2018 18:35

I bought my wedding dress "preloved" on eBay because I couldn't afford the £2800 price tag. I paid £480 for it. It was a size 12 and I was a size 16. I had 7 months to lose the weight and managed it, just!
I didn't dare eat on the day though which was a shame as the food we ordered was amazing

Alabasterangel6 · 24/04/2018 18:37

I’ve been dress hunting with a friend and seen quite a few designs like this - all over lace, sweetheart neckline, and those sparkly belts are all over the bridal shops you can just add one on.

Or give us the name and the make and let the mumsnet dress finding ninjas have a look! Bet we can some up with almost identical if not completely identical.

Plantlover · 24/04/2018 18:37

If you post the brand and dress name I bet someone on mumsnet can find it for you.

Izzabellasasperella · 24/04/2018 18:41

Could you put the name and designer on here? You never know mumsnetters have found dresses before.😀

category12 · 24/04/2018 18:42

That's too big a drop in size.

icelollycraving · 24/04/2018 18:43

Ok, it’s not a terribly unusual style so there are ones out there v similar.
As several pp said, wedding dresses come up small. I was a size 20 and had to order a 24. If it’s an 8 which has been altered I just can’t see how it could fit.
On the plus side mners are fantastic at finding things for people so good luck!

Pompom42 · 24/04/2018 18:43

I was a size 16 before I got married and it took me just over a whole year to get down to a size 14. The dress was a size 16

sarcasmisnotthelowestformofwit · 24/04/2018 18:44

Get it copied by a dressmaker. That's way too big a weight loss to risk it on.

Alabasterangel6 · 24/04/2018 18:44

I know the designer and dress but I’m reluctant to post it because the OP said there was a name connection and I don’t want to be outing.

LMG132028 · 24/04/2018 18:47

When we were planning our wedding I saw hundreds of dresses in magazines & online that I thought I wanted, even had it in my head the style that I wanted because I thought it would suit me best, but when I actually went to try dresses on the dress that I fell in love with was completely different to anything i’d seen & the style was nothing like what I had in my head.

So on that note I would say that it probably wouldn’t be a great idea to order it x

springmachine · 24/04/2018 18:47

Just as an example, I was a size 16 in January and started Cambridge diet to lose the 3 stone I need to get down to a size 12.
I have managed to get down to a 31'' waist do not yet a 12 and I can't see me losing much more.

Cantaana · 24/04/2018 18:58

I see you have realised that to drop to a size 8 would be too much.

I work in a bridal shop and the most important thing to remember is that it is about INCHES NOT WEIGHT. You obviously know who the designer is so google the size chart so you can see what each size actually equates to. But do be aware that second hand you may find that the dress has already been taken in, and once taken in it is normally cut so it can't be let out again.

Have you tried phoning all the stockists in the UK of that designer (looks like a Maggie model but i can't be sure). If it is discontinued shops will be selling off their samples and you may find one that way. It will involve lots of ringing around but worth it if it is THE ONE.

Good luck!

GinUser · 24/04/2018 18:58

That is a very pretty dress, but I agree with others and with you, that a 16 to an 8 is not a good idea.
However, could you find a dressmaker and have something very similar made for you (with allowances for weight loss)?

Doidontimmm · 24/04/2018 18:59

Why couldn’t you find a dressmaker to copy it for you?

Cantaana · 24/04/2018 19:02

Just reverse image searched and it IS a Maggie,

takes a bow

So i would start by calling all the stockists of Maggie in the UK, www.maggiesottero.com/find-a-store

Cantaana · 24/04/2018 19:03

Doidontimmm Because that is illegal. It may be discontinued but the copyright is still held by the designer.

Doidontimmm · 24/04/2018 19:04

Ah sorry... didn’t mean copy exactly but could get something similar made.

SaucyJane · 24/04/2018 19:14

Oh OP - if it were a size or 2, but a tiny bridal 8 - I don't know many people who'd fit into that. Could you find someone who'd make it for you to look like that - you could even add anything you liked that way - or find one that's similar?

I sympathise as I have a fair few "gotta have it" items in my wardrobe that I've never fitted into yet!

It's lovely, you have gorgeous taste :)

seven201 · 24/04/2018 19:15

It's beautiful but no I don't think you should buy it. I bought my dress through putting a wanted ad on preloved. Have you tried that?

Cantaana · 24/04/2018 19:16

OP I;VE FOUND IT IN SIZE 14 PM ING YOU NOW

Cantaana · 24/04/2018 19:18

@SharkiraSharkira, messaged you now, should be in your messages. fingers crossed for you, let me know if you get it Smile
