Pineapples! I buy them then they sit in the fruit bowl giving me the evil eye. I know how to peel them but I hate it!

squishee · 26/04/2018 19:21

Potatoes for mash: microwave in their skins, then leave in cold water for a few mins. Due to the temperature difference the flesh shrinks away from the skin. So once the spud is drained and halved the skin comes off in one piece if you're lucky. Either way much less of a faff.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/04/2018 21:39

"I love potatoes but preparing them for any form is so annoying. "

Baked potato in the microwave is easy.
I don't do any other kind of potato, seeing my parents peel them almost every evening was enough to put me off.

I don't bother with oranges but eat satsumas and clementines.

MongerTruffle · 26/04/2018 22:59

The people who don't peel or wipe mushrooms, don't they have dirt on them?

They do, but it's "clean" dirt because supermarket mushrooms are grown in controlled conditions. You only need to brush away any chunks of dirt.

Tortycat · 26/04/2018 23:22

Agree with pineapples... and they seem to irritate my mouth

itsthequietones yes to awful carving out of swedes!!

Will add ginger - pain to peel and grate. Though i now freeze first and just grate the peel in - so much easier!

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 26/04/2018 23:28

Peeling shallots. I swap for onions now.

Making white sauce. No idea why but I hate the whole adding milk gradually and stirring. I'm fine making my own custard though!

Also trying to chop butternut squash, my knife always gets stuck in it

QuimReaper · 27/04/2018 00:10

I buy lazy garlic, ginger and chilli because I've (belatedly) realised that life is too short.

I used to but I've switched to chopped frozen garlic and ginger. Both are much more flavoursome, especially the garlic. I get through about a bag of chopped garlic a week Blush

I love vegetarian shepherds (gardeners?) pie, but my arthritis makes peeling and mashing spuds a real pain. So I was chuffed to find frozen mashed spuds at Sainsbury's that haven't got anything weird in them, just Potato (86%), Cows' Milk (10%), Butter (Cows' Milk) (3%), Salt, Pepper. They come out of the bag in pieces that are perfect for laying in a single layer on top of a savoury goop (culinary term for home made vegetarian shepherds pie innards) and bake in the oven just like home made shepherds pie
I also can't cut through winter squash these days, but I love growing and eating them, so I jab a fork through the skin, bung them into the oven whole, and once they have baked it is dead easy to cut them in half, scoop out the (now roasted) seeds, and scrape off the softened peel.
Can't do swede any longer either, but Aunt Bessie's frozen Carrot & Swede Mash is tasty and though expensive it keeps for ages in the freezer.
Peeling oranges is impossible, so I use a sharp knife to cut them into segments, peel and all, then hold the peel and eat the flesh leaving the peel behind.

Coralcolouredchrome · 27/04/2018 06:41

I am fed up of buying oranges other than satumas, that are sour, full of pips or just plain chewy.

ferrier · 27/04/2018 06:52

Agree 're oranges - proper oranges satsumas etc are OK.
Cauliflower is easy - don't see what the problem is - they are one of the easier to prep vegs.
If I've a large amount of cheese or carrot then I'll use the processor to grate it.
Agree with butternut squash. Makes turnip, swede seem a doddle. And mashed potato - such a faff though I'll do it as it tastes scrummy.
Things I hate- deskinning fish, carving chicken, anything that needs breadcrumbing.

Louise56 · 27/04/2018 08:01

I just cut them up and eat them like that, easier than peeling.

TomRavenscroft · 27/04/2018 09:56

Quim, thanks for the tip. Stupid question: do you mean you can buy them chopped and frozen, or do you prep your own?

Nydj · 27/04/2018 11:33

MereDintofPandiculation for broad beans try using a y-shaped potato peeler to run along the thinner of the two long sides and open to reveal the broad beans. Sometimes, you end up with a bit of the beans being shaved but it’s a small price to pay.

DazzlingMilton · 27/04/2018 11:36

orange cutting hack

You’re welcome

ppeatfruit · 27/04/2018 11:53

Ok all you haters of butternut squash\squash peeling DON'T DO IT !!!! ( I know an OP has suggested another way )

But the best way is to wash your squash Make small holes in it. Bake in the oven till it's semi soft or completely soft. If it's semi soft you can then, cut it into wedges easily (after removing the seeds of course) and fry them or make soup with them The skin comes off easily if you must or just eat it!!!! yummy.

I also don't peel carrots, celeriac or swedes etc. , just wash them properly with a brush and steam them whole (it is far more nutritious). Don't overdo them esp. if you want to make soup afterwards , the skin comes off easily then. You can use the water as stock too !

cooliebrown · 27/04/2018 12:00

what was named first d'you think - the carrot or the orange?

UnaOfStormhold · 27/04/2018 12:03

Cooliebrown, did you know carrots weren't originally orange?

kateandme · 27/04/2018 12:10

for those struggling with ginger quimreeper tortycat peel with a teaspoon.amazing!

ThanksForAllTheFish · 27/04/2018 12:22

Roast potatoes. I love them but all the peeling, chopping, par boiling and an eternity in to oven to get them crispy makes me wonder if it’s worth all the effort

ToffeePennie · 27/04/2018 12:37

Peeling spuds
Chopping onions
Peeling oranges is horrible.
Mostly I quite like being in the kitchen as it means I get 5 minutes peace!

ppeatfruit · 27/04/2018 13:32

Marigold's are your friend! I don't eat spuds now, they give me arthritis, but I used to wear my rubber gloves for peeling them and other veg. Sometimes with onions too. If you keep at a bit of a distance, sitting down, from the onions they don't make you cry!
