You SLICE oranges OP. Who peels the bastards? Grin

Sakurasnail · 24/04/2018 10:49

Pomegranates. The skin makes your fingers yellow, getting the seeds out is soo fiddly. How are you actually meant to eat them??

Mookatron · 24/04/2018 10:57

If you don't peel squash do you still get the delicious sticky brown stuff on the outside? If so, you've changed my life too!

glitterbiscuits · 24/04/2018 11:00

Swede! Need a laser to get it peeled and chopped.

TartanDr3ams · 24/04/2018 11:01

Glad im not the only one with food prep hates!

By oranges i meant satsumas etc.. proper oranges i do just cut into 4/6 and suck the juice out 😂.. my biggest issue is PITH!!!!

OP posts:
TotHappy · 24/04/2018 11:09

Ahh yes, i just eat the pith. Easier. My mum peels her satsumas really closely, gets all the pith off then... Eats it. It's the pith she likes.

A friend once told me you didn't have to peel squash when roasting, but she didn't say the falling off thing... We just ate the skin. It was less than delicious.

I LOVE pomegranetes though! Just cut a third off, or a wedge out, then flake the seeds off with your thumb. It's like discovering jewels when you peel back the membrane and fid more. They now have little pots of the seeds but I think they're wrong - if you haven't fought for the pomegranete, you don't deserve any.

Most food prep doesn't bother me tho. Leeks can be a pain when you wash but there's always some mud left further up - but tbh, i usually just chuck it in, mud and all. It's going to be cooked after all. Ditto mushrooms, although if there's lots of obvious mud I'll rinse them.

Fillingthepiggy · 24/04/2018 11:10

Swede and squash. I now just nuke the swede if I’m doing mash - google singing swede! I also nuke the squash for a few mins which makes it SO much easier to remove the skin before chopping!

Browning meat. Especially mince and draining the fat.
Avocados. That bloody stone. That bloody squishy ,green, splodgy stuff that tastes like fart.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 24/04/2018 11:20

Brilliant. Grin

TartanDr3ams · 24/04/2018 11:28

I agree with turnip/swede. I have a decent scar from cutting turnip when I was 15 and helping my dad make dinner.. it was solid and rolled from under the knife when I tried to hack at it.. safe to say the bright red bloody turnip no longer made it onto the sunday roast....

I find the Titan Peeler makes peeling squash and shredding veg so much easier, it has a push-pull action so it's quicker too.

UnaOfStormhold · 24/04/2018 11:30

Mook you get the lovely sticky brown bit on the cut surfaces but not so where the peel is - still, I feel it's worth the trade off!

TossDaily · 24/04/2018 11:32

Chopping onions. I hate it.

Two years ago I discovered frozen chopped onions and I can't tell you how much better my life is as a result.

TossDaily · 24/04/2018 11:33

You can also buy bags of prepped frozen butternut squash from of course Waitrose.

Mookatron · 24/04/2018 11:36

Una I agree! I'm going to try it!

Chinesecrested · 24/04/2018 11:38

Love oranges. Peel with a sharp knife, break into segments but don't eat the white bits. Messy i know, but worth it Wink

FowlisWester · 24/04/2018 11:45

For the mince person... we now only use venison mince. It's about 4.50 for 500g in our local farm shop. It doesn't release tons of fat or scummy water like normal mince and I like the flavour.

LegendOfTomorrow · 24/04/2018 11:46

Cutting up a large, tough swede (or turnip to the Scots - huge debate in our Scottish-English House!) is my pet peeve. My slice downwards always turns a bit meaning it's a decent size at the top and wafer thin at the bottom 😡.

And I HATE washing potatoes and only buy pre-washed ones. MIL (who never has a sink teaming with dirty dishes like I do) can't understand it and buys a sack of muddy tatties every few weeks.
It's no wonder she needs a sackful though as half her potatoes end up in the bin as she uses a knife and not a peeler and therefore throws away half her potatoes and carrots. Such a waste.

UnaOfStormhold · 24/04/2018 11:48

Toss, even better is to get non-frozen chopped onions, caramelise a huge batch (I use the slow cooker) and then freeze in 100-150g quantities. Then when you want to cook you just add with the other ingredients rather than having to fry them all first.

4yearsnosleep · 24/04/2018 11:49

Chopping garlic, chopping and peeling swede and butternut squash. Pomegranates!

Oh I love Oranges mmmm I cut them in 8 pieces though so I don't have to peel them and also they're smaller sections so the juice is easier to control Grin

flowerslemonade · 24/04/2018 11:58

I just cut it in half then each into four bits and eat it like that
I cant stand it getting under my nails so that's the best way to avoid it

deloresclaiborne · 24/04/2018 12:23
