Agree with pp who said about microwaving swede. Honestly it's a life changer and l will never chop and boil one again! Also it tastes so much nicer, I think because none of the flavour is being boiled out.

TerfinUSA · 24/04/2018 16:20

what about the lethal sugar content? I heard two oranges gives you instant diabetes.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 24/04/2018 16:29

Butternut squash.. I love it, but every time I buy it I forget what a total hassle it's going to be..

eggcellent · 24/04/2018 16:33

Tadaaa!

To think that oranges..
Spartacunt · 24/04/2018 16:38

Celeriac is the all time mashing bastard. And peeling quails eggs is a nightmare.

UpstartCrow · 24/04/2018 16:40

Spartacunt You just beat me to it. Put it whole into a pressure cooker then peel it when its cooked.

Spartacunt · 24/04/2018 16:41

I haven't got a pressure cooker! Must I buy one to avoid the agony? Evil celeriac.

LunaMay · 24/04/2018 17:59

I kind of peel mushrooms, i'm starting to think that's not normal... Blush

ALongHardWinter · 24/04/2018 18:40

Aren't the only fruit?

MereDintofPandiculation · 24/04/2018 19:07

Amazed at the people who find butternut squash difficult to prepare. Keep the skin on, because either it peels easily when cooked or it becomes soft enough to eat. Scoop the seeds out with a soup spoon.

Shelling broad beans on the other hand... And they just don't taste the same frozen.

If you really want fussy, try growing asparagus peas. Pretty flowers, deep intense red. But the pods need to be picked at less than an inch long. You can imagine how long it takes to pick a saucepan full.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 24/04/2018 23:22

Luna DH peels mushrooms as well. Why, when you only have to wipe them? DH always asks me to buy big ones as they're easier to peel.

OreoMini · 24/04/2018 23:31

I think I’m being stupid.

What’s this ‘wiping’ mushrooms ? Or peeling.. I just get them out the packet, make sure they are clean. Cut up and fry/roast...

And I just read someone removes the middle of strawberry’s? Never thought of this .. I just slice the top off and eat itBlush

Also butternut squash I always roast with the skin on and I eat the skin too.

TotHappy · 24/04/2018 23:37

My mum used to peel mushrooms - does still for all i know. I thought it was because they are grown in shit.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/04/2018 04:16

Oreo don't the mushrooms usually have dirt on them? I don't want to eat dirt.

Longdistance · 25/04/2018 04:28

I never peel butternut squash with a peeler. I top and tail, stand it upright, cut with large knife, de-seed, slice it, then the slice has the skin cut off.
I really wish I had a squash to show you all how easy it is.
I have a Y shaped peeler for potatoes, it’s so easy to use.
But, oranges are an arsehole to peel.

Longdistance · 25/04/2018 04:29

I peel mushrooms too Blush I learnt that from my dm.

glueandstick · 25/04/2018 09:23

I once got an infected finger nail from trying to open a starburst. The paper went under my nail and practically out of my nose. True fact that.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/04/2018 09:53

I feel a little bit sick now.

QuimReaper · 25/04/2018 10:19

How do you peel a mushroom? Like a button mushroom, or do you only peel those huge portobello ones?

I only eat them when DH is away as he hates them, I want to try peeling one now...

icelolly99 · 25/04/2018 10:30

Longdistance that's how I prep Butternut Squash too! So much easier. I also toast the seeds with oil and spices; yum.

LunaMay · 25/04/2018 18:35

I break the stem off and then peel the top. I never ate mushrooms as a kid so don't know if I picked it up from mum or that I just didn't know what to do when I did start liking them Grin

howabout · 25/04/2018 18:49

My teenage DC still insist on me peeling oranges for them-I have strong nails. My top tip is to keep them at room temperature and roll them firmly on the tabletop to loosen the skin before peeling. Also very fussy about buying juicy oranges with thin skin rather than dry giant ones.

Don't have a microwave or a pressure cooker so swedes are going to continue to defeat me.

itsthequietones · 25/04/2018 19:03

I, erm, love food prep. Sorry.

However, a couple of years ago, a friend bought some pumpkins for Halloween to carve. I asked if they were difficult to hollow out and carve, he said that they could be. They were a piece of piss, he'd obviously never had to carve out a bloody swede as a child.

Longdistance · 25/04/2018 20:09

icelolly99 I do think that is how to prepare a squash. The skin is too thick to peel with a peeler, so chopping it up like that is the best way. Also, if roasting the half it’s easy to peel the skin off too,

dontcallmelen · 25/04/2018 20:23

@LunaMay that’s what I always do, break of stem & peel that’s what my mum did as well.
