Garlic is the worst, trying to peel it then you have to deal with the smell that lasts for days on your fingers.

I've never peeled or wiped a mushroom! Blush

DwangelaForever · 25/04/2018 20:38

Another vote for peeling potatoes here, I make hubby do it. If he can't we don't have potatoes 😂

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/04/2018 20:41

Garlic, squash it with the flat of a knife and the skin comes away easily. Or use a garlic press and chuck away the skin afterwards.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 25/04/2018 20:43

The people who don't peel or wipe mushrooms, don't they have dirt on them? The Basics ones I always buy do.

I love pulled pork but hate the actual pulling part, it's tedious to me

FASH84 · 25/04/2018 21:01

In my house the rule is a bit of dirt never killed anyone, I cook as many veg with skin on as possible, I've never washed mushrooms, just flick off any big bits of mud. Also hate making mash but have discovered it freezes well, so if I do it I make a vat and then Tupperware and freeze . MIL was helping peel swede and potatoes at Christmas and was complaining about how blunt my peeler was (rarely use it don't care) next time I saw her she had bought me a lovely new one (having already given me a lovely much coveted new Cath kidston apron for being Christmas host), and we got a beautiful knife set and sharpener from auntie in law recently which I know was at her suggestion. I know MILs get a bad rap on MN, but I'm not going to knock it, comes for dinner, helps me prep, buys me kitchen gifts and often brings alcohol 😁

Oranges = too much effort, too little reward.

Apparently though: it only takes four simple steps to roll an orange out into a strip: Cut the top and bottom of the orange, cut a vertical slit on one side, then gently roll the orange out.

morningconstitutional2017 · 26/04/2018 12:51

I don't particularly like washing potatoes which have soil on them so I try to buy the 'cleaner' looking ones.

I like home made bread so on the odd occasions when I make it I do so in the food mixer as I hate kneading it and getting flour stuck in my fingernails. The horrible wet claggy mix just makes me cringe which is why I'll probably never become a potter.

kateandme · 26/04/2018 13:53

with garlic bulbs get a jar or something and just smash each bulb.skin comes off instantly.or put them in a jar and shake them same thing.
don't peel carrots squash, parsnip or sweet potato.much nicer.game changer for us.
potatos for me to on the faff I hate it.especially when you want it for shepherds pie.
spring onions can be a faff too when the outside layer need sheefing off first.
oranges and apples for me are buggers.because if I'm going down the fruit and peeling way I need them to be gooooood tasting.and half the time you get the orange drama peeling over and its tastless crap.where.is.the.flavour.gone.

TomRavenscroft · 26/04/2018 15:33

Peeling oranges too. So I don't – I just juice them. I get satsumas etc for eating whole as they're easy to peel.

I hate washing and chopping herbs. I don't like how bits of them stick all over my wet hands, and the work surfaces.

Peeling pineapples is a major faff but I don't get them very often.

I don't generally peel veg like carrots etc, just give them a scrub.

I buy lazy garlic, ginger and chilli because I've (belatedly) realised that life is too short.

purpleweasel · 26/04/2018 15:57

Was it Roald Dahl's autobiography where he talked about meeting someone who only ate their oranges with a knife & fork?

Apparently you're supposed to "brush" mushrooms instead of wash/peel...bit of kitchen towel will do the job if there's any visible dirt (as long as they're not old & slimy, yuk). I don't try too hard mind as I've always vaguely believed (on no evidence at all) that mushrooms are grown indoors in sterile compost so that must be OK then

MumofBoysx2 · 26/04/2018 16:01

Butternut squash!! Bloody hate peeling those, need to be a bodybuilder to get one of those chopped up. And peeling sweet potatoes - bits flying everywhere. Peeling broad beans... there are a few. But as far as oranges are concerned, I buy the Sainsbury Taste the Difference ones (extra juicy) then halve the orange, then quarter then 8ths, and then you can eat straight from the segments :-)

DownInThePark · 26/04/2018 17:15

I agree with all the above and would like to add mangoes to the list, always wrestle with them too.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 26/04/2018 17:24

Yes, that's what I do purpleweasel. I do it with kitchen towel.

IntelligentYetIndecisive · 26/04/2018 17:25

Kiwi fruit.

All that peeling for something smaller than a plum.

TomRavenscroft · 26/04/2018 17:48

You can cut kiwis in half and scoop out the whole thing like an egg.

JumpingFrogs · 26/04/2018 17:49

I put unpeeled cloves of garlic into garlic crusher. The good stuff is squeezed out, leaving a flat disc of skin that you can just lift out of the crusher so easier to clean.

Leontine · 26/04/2018 17:53

@TomRavenscroft People peel kiwis? Shock

I hate peeling an orange, then discovering that there's a tiny cut on my finger that I hadn't previously seen.
I eat them very rarely though as they're just not worth the effort for me.

TomRavenscroft · 26/04/2018 17:56

Leontine, I don't! I was advising Intelligent, who sounds like (s)he does.

I showed this technique to a RL friend who'd been peeling them for ages and cursing it. He reacted as though I'd showed him the secret to eternal life. Grin

HonkyWonkWoman · 26/04/2018 17:58

If your roasting Butternut Squash you don't need to peel it at all.
Just de-seed, chop and roast. The skin will be soft when cooked!!!!!!!
I know!
Seriously I couldn't believe this little gem when I first heard it.
You will be liberated!

MountainPeakGeek · 26/04/2018 18:36

Tamingoftheglue - I also hate peeling potatoes, no idea why but it makes the skin on my hands really sore.

Me too! What is that about? I don't have particularly sensitive skin, but something about peeling spuds really irritates my hands. Odd.

allthegoodnameshadgone · 26/04/2018 18:42

Peeling anything gives me the rage.

Whilst we are talking abut food, when I eat celery it makes my throat numb anyone else get this?

SkaPunkPrincess · 26/04/2018 18:44

burninggubbins frozen mash. seriously.

Borridge · 26/04/2018 19:02

Sakurasnail - Pomegranate: halve, then either hold them face down and whack the top with a wooden spoon so the seeds fall out or fill a bowl of cold water and pry the seeds out with your hands. This last method has the advantage that the yellow skins float to the top and you can just keep any seeds you are not eating in the water in the fridge.
