Aibu - maid chucked away a bag that had clothes in

Currently on a 2 week holiday abroad in Mexico.

The maid comes daily, 2 days ago we went to the shops and bought some trinkets for my daughter to take home. The bag it come in I told her to start putting her dirty underwear in so they didn’t get mixed up with her clean (she’s 7).

My partner didn’t hear me say this and the next time I seen the bag he had put some rubbish in it, my daughter then put her dirty but brand new top from next in the bag and a brand new pair of shorts. I seen her do this and thought il need to remember to take them out but forgot.

The maids come and now the bag is gone, but iv only just realised a day later. So it would of had a empty box type thing which was the rubbish and my daughters clothes in.

I’m a tad pissed off that her new clothes are now gone. THE BAG WAS NOT NEXT TO THE BIN, Before anyone asks.

Am I right to be abit annoyed, I don’t understand why the maids binned the bag, I know there was some rubbish in there but it was actually a box to something we bought so we might of wanted to keep it anyway.

So AIBU? I asked at reception last night for them to check but they did say it was more then likely gone already. I have to go back this morning to check.

Just one of those things I think. Your DH made the mistake too. I think if it comes back great but if not just chalk it up to experience.

YANBU to be ‘a bit annoyed’ but anything above that or any formal complaint would be very unreasonable indeed.

Let it go and enjoy your holiday. It is nothing more than a minor annoyance.

Yeah, annoying but I'd suck it up I think. If you demand compensation they'll probably take it out of her wages and I bet she gets paid fuck all.

I can see why you'd be incredibly pissed off with this, but I think you will have to chalk it up to just one of those unfortunate things. (And sadly I think if you are considering asking for the stuff to be replaced, you might want to also consider how much maids get paid in Mexico - I suspect it won't be very much at all.)

Surely your husband should take some of the blame for using the bag as a rubbish bag?

It's unfortunate , but one of those things. Any bag left next to the bin is assumed to be rubbish.
I've bagged things up many times, and left next to the bin to be taken away.

Similar happened to my mother. She left a pair of shoes in a bag at the bottom of a wardrobe in a hotel and it was thrown out (thankfully they got it back for her). I always avoid putting things in plastic unless I shut them into my case or put on the top shelf of the wardrobe with do not throw out.

I don't understand why people are saying it's one of those things, a minor annoyance, just suck it up etc

Of course the maid shouldn't throw away anything that's not in the bin. And it's a loss of clothes – used but presumably perfectly good ones as well as the new stuff.

I'd complain about the hotel's chucking-away procedures and leave a review pointing it out too.

How come you are in Mexico in term time?

I won’t be asking for compensation for the items as it will probably come the the poor maids months wage! It was shorts, top and a cardi plus a couple of pairs of pants at the cost of approx £30 as it was next top and cardi.

I just don’t really understand why she binned the bag when she would of seen clothes in it and it wasn’t next to the bin, she’s not threw away another bag with stuff in on the side.

It won’t be ruining my holiday at all, just slightly annoyed as it was brand new items, just wished it was her old pair of shorts and one of the primark tops that cost a couple of £ instead!

Your partner thought the bag was for rubbish too, so I can’t see why you’re surprised the maid did. I have seen the mess people leave in their hotel rooms and it’s not pretty! It’s also not the maid’s job to have to decide if something is rubbish or not. When we stay in hotels we make sure the room is tidy before we leave it each day, and things are stowed away in wardrobes or drawers.
It would be wrong to leave a review blaming the hotel cleaning staff for a mistake which was of your making. Learn from it.

@Pengggwn - that wasn’t placed next to the bin and had clothes in.... so it wouldn’t of all looked like rubbish

Maybe ask your husband why he thought it was a rubbish bag, and then you might be able to work out why the maid did too?

@Procrastination4 - the bag had one pair of girl knickers in when my partner put the empty box in, he never heard me tell our daughter to put clothes in. My daughter put the clothes on top of the box

No it’s not her job to decide what’s rubbish or not so if she’s not sure and it’s not next to the bin I presume she would air on the side of caution and not bin it to be honest

How much rubbish was actually in there, and was it covering the clothes? Obviously she wouldn't have thrown it away if it didn't look like rubbish.

Mistaking (easily, considering the maid wasn't the only person) is minor.

But you said your DH has put rubbish in it. So it would have looked like rubbish at first glance.

You're not unreasonable to be annoyed, no. You'd be unreasonable to do anything about it, imo, for the reasons you already stated - they'll probably dock her wages, which are hardly likely to be vast.
