Aibu - maid chucked away a bag that had clothes in

Sammy901 · 22/04/2018 14:57

Currently on a 2 week holiday abroad in Mexico.

The maid comes daily, 2 days ago we went to the shops and bought some trinkets for my daughter to take home. The bag it come in I told her to start putting her dirty underwear in so they didn’t get mixed up with her clean (she’s 7).

My partner didn’t hear me say this and the next time I seen the bag he had put some rubbish in it, my daughter then put her dirty but brand new top from next in the bag and a brand new pair of shorts. I seen her do this and thought il need to remember to take them out but forgot.

The maids come and now the bag is gone, but iv only just realised a day later. So it would of had a empty box type thing which was the rubbish and my daughters clothes in.

I’m a tad pissed off that her new clothes are now gone. THE BAG WAS NOT NEXT TO THE BIN, Before anyone asks.

Am I right to be abit annoyed, I don’t understand why the maids binned the bag, I know there was some rubbish in there but it was actually a box to something we bought so we might of wanted to keep it anyway.

So AIBU? I asked at reception last night for them to check but they did say it was more then likely gone already. I have to go back this morning to check.

How come you are in Mexico in term time?

I was about to reply, "perhaps her daughter is just an unusually solicitous 55 year old?" when I realised Sammy already gave her age in the OP. Grin

Pengggwn · 22/04/2018 15:33

Well, I imagine it was just an oversight. I'm sure she didn't do it deliberately. So yes, be irritated, but I would leave it at that.

ButchyRestingFace · 22/04/2018 15:33

Shots fired early on this one. Grin

On our Lord's day of rest too.

ferntwist · 22/04/2018 15:34

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just one of those things. The maid is probably earning less than the cost of the contents of the bag.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday!

Don’t waste your holiday time Mumsnetting or getting worked up about this. It’s annoying but not a big deal in the scheme of things.

MyFavouritePlace · 22/04/2018 15:37

Off topic but my son is still on Easter holidays - they finally go back on Wednesday!

It looked so much like a rubbish bag that your DH used it as such, thus making it into an actual rubbish bag. Maid looks, sees a bag containing empty wrappers and packaging, so rubbish. Not the maid's fault at all.

FeckinCrunchiesInTheCar · 22/04/2018 15:41

I'd be annoyed too -
and tempted to find out where she dumped them.

missbattenburg · 22/04/2018 15:41

Of course the maid shouldn't throw away anything that's not in the bin.

Except that another person will have had a go at the maid for NOT throwing all the rubbish away. The poor women won't be able to do right for doing wrong.

She gets paid fuck all, has a hard life and literally everyone will think she has done something stupid and complained or shouted at her for it.

Let it go and find comfort in the fact that you are having a lovely holiday which very much makes you the lucky one in this scenario.

Sammy901 · 22/04/2018 15:45

Reception has just said that the maids take nothing from the room which is incorrect, he tried telling me I must of took it out and left it somewhere Hmm ... I did say no it was dirty clothes so u wouldn’t off took them out with me😂

OP, ignore the breathtakingly bitchy and unpleasant replies from a couple of the other posters, including the twat that criticised your grammar!

I would be annoyed too. The maid shouldn't really take it upon him/herself to decide that something that isn't in the bin needs to be thrown away.

paxillin · 22/04/2018 15:49

I can't get past you seeing someone using your bag as a rubbish tip and thinking "I need to remember". I am itching to get in there and fix it.

DwangelaForever · 22/04/2018 15:50

I'd be more annoyed at hubby for putting rubbish in it!

TomRavenscroft · 22/04/2018 15:56

it’s also not the maid’s job to have to decide if something is rubbish or not

No, so the obvious course of action and what housekeeping staff should be trained to do is not throw away stuff that's not in a bin.

Except that another person will have had a go at the maid for NOT throwing all the rubbish away.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I wouldn't have a go at someone for not throwing stuff away if it wasn't in a bin or clearly labelled 'to throw away' or similar.

XiCi · 22/04/2018 15:57

If the hotel policy is that the maids take nothing from the room then she's either moved the bag somewhere you haven't noticed or she's nicked your dds clothes.

I don't doubt it. However, 18 months in India showed me how fucking appalling many people are to maids... you might not have but I guarantee someone would...

Notthemessiah · 22/04/2018 16:00

Ella why should the OP ignore it when you obviously couldn't yourself? I'd say calling someone else a twat is probably worse than correcting their grammar but that's maybe just my opinion.

OP, I'd be pissed off too (and maybe a little suspicious) but I'd try and let it go and enjoy the rest of the holiday as most others have suggested.

missbattenburg · 22/04/2018 16:01

In fact... I just stumbled across another AIBU where there is a real mix of people who would and would not like cleaners to automatically empty bins without being asked.

Just illustrates how everyone expects something different...

I agree. Some people see the power imbalance and try to treat staff in the majority world fairly. Some people see the power and act like utter fuckers because they can.

Kazzyhoward · 22/04/2018 16:06

Well, I don't let the maids into our hotel rooms at all. I just leave the "do not disturb" or "don't do the room" card on the door. If I need replacement towels/loo roll etc., I'll just ask when the maid is around or if I don't see one, I'll ask reception. I once had some new nightwear taken from the bed as the maid changed the bedding and must not have noticed it in the bed - very annoying as it was new and expensive, but I didn't make a fuss - these things happen. Likewise, long ago we were in the room when the maid came and were gobsmacked when she used the same cloth to wipe the toilet and the sink. After that, we'd rather just clean up after ourselves (it takes a few moments if you keep up) rather than risk heaven knows what bacteria may be on the maid's only cloth - making our own beds etc is hardly a hardship.

sentMai · 22/04/2018 16:08

Ok. I'll fuck off.

You definitely spend your holiday on MN.

MushroomGravy · 22/04/2018 16:13

Dh entirely to blame.

If you choose to complain make very sure you are completely honest about the rubbish on top of the bag. Don't leave that bit out to get your way as it makes the maid look incompetent when really your dh is.

Sammy901 · 22/04/2018 16:17

@sentMai - Il spend my holiday how I like! Iv been here 3 daysHmm but the kids are only just getting up as they have had a lay in! So yes iv been on mumsnet while they have been asleep! Or when relaxing by the pool, so fucking what? Goodbye.

Mushroom - the rubbish was on the bottom of the bag, I won’t be complaining though as iv already mentioned. I have just asked at reception to see if it’s possible they still have the bag
