In calling my dd Vagina a "Vagina"

DD is 16 months and is noticing body parts and pointing to them and making a noise, at which I will say "arm" "leg" etc. Tonight, she touched her privates and I said "Vagina" dp was a little shocked , and before any one shouts, I KNOW its her Vulva, but dont think that word is acceptable with adults never mind children iyswim.

We where having relate counselling last year for sex issues on my behalf, in other words I dont like it, and we discussed this particular issue, and the counseller told us to call it by its name, which is what we woould do with any other body part, such as her arm ect as already mentioned.

As a rookie mum, will this come back to haunt me in later years?
In other words, when she can talk will she talk about her Vagina, will she say it in inappropriate situations.
i.e my friend dds are 7 and 10 and still call it "mary" and I am pretty sure they would not know what a vagina is, and also pretty sure their mother would be mortified if my little angel came out with it

What do other people call it? Advice please

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 20:53

Lily I think the name you have chosen (vagina) is a lot better than something fluffy and incomprehensible

you were trying to be honest and direct

FrannyandZooey · 13/05/2007 20:54

and Lily some days I think we never discuss anything OTHER than what to call girls' bits

you were not to know

it is a BIG subject and worries people which is why it keeps popping up

Don't apologise Lily. Very often it is a nightmare wondering what to call those body parts. Vagina and vulva just sound so medical and not very nice really.

To make you feel better, we don't really have a name for it , I refer to it as dd's front bottom. I just couldn't think of any other name. But I suppose if she asks more I will say vagina.

I doubt that at 16 months your dd will remember anyway. So if you want to change the name of it you can.

i am sure when she is older, i will call it a fanny, i dont like the word vagina..because i dont. makes me think of vagisil.

expatinscotland · 13/05/2007 21:00

It's a lulu.

RosaLuxembourg · 13/05/2007 21:01

Mine call their's vagina - that is because they subject came up in the context of childbirth - but I am now obviously going to teach them the term fur chequebook. It's got to be better than flower, minnie, daisy etc.

ruddynorah · 13/05/2007 21:04

vulva is what you see on the outside. vagina is the reproductive part, ie for periods, sex and babies. you also have a urethra which you wee out of. so to call the 'area' a vagina is really not right. the vagina is just one bit of it. usually little girls are referring to their vulva, the bits on the outside.

pampam · 13/05/2007 21:04

when i read the title of this thread i thought the OP had a daughter called Vagina and had called her a vagina
DH and i call it "lady parts" as in "don't dip teddy in your lady parts" when we're changing nappy and tryin to distract her with a cuddly toy!
I don't really think i'd like dd to talk about her vagina when she's 3 or 4, i don't think i knew i had a vagina til i was at least 6 and it didn't do me any harm!

plummymummy · 13/05/2007 21:04

I told ds his willy is also a penis. He's nearly 3yrs and very curious. I told him I have bits n pieces (when he asked what mine is called). I didn't want to say it is a vagina. Why is that though
