To get ragey at people booking seats for a flight

And leaving the window seat AngryAngry seriously if you're a couple book the inside two seats, it's so frustrating.

Also what determines if an infant can sit on a particular seat, I've just selected my seats for the flight and me and hubby have to sit one behind the other in window seats because my daughter apparently can't sit in that row 🙄

I have booked an aisle and middle seat because I'm pregnant and have to get up to walk around/go pee often, and obviously I want my partner to sit next to me.
Different people have different reasons and can book any seat they like- especially when paying extra for it!

Waspsarewankers · 23/04/2018 17:49

It's to do with the location of infant oxygen masks - infants can only sit where they are. There are also rules that no more than 1 infant can be sat in a row.

GreenTulips · 23/04/2018 17:54

Waspsarewankers

And we are up to 16

Who knew?

Waspsarewankers · 23/04/2018 17:55

With Tui flights you cannot leave a single window seat free by sitting 5 in a row. Not 100% sure of the exact reason but I'd say it's to do with the fact these are holiday charter flights with fewer single travellers than on scheduled flights.
Famimies/couples can get upset at check in if they havnt pre booked seats and get split up. We try to avoid sitting people up but we cannot move people already seated or those that have paid to pre book, so it does happen.

BitOutOfPractice · 23/04/2018 19:21

I like the window seat when I'm alone (lean on it yo sleep) but if I'm with dp we book aisle and middle (I can lean on him!)

So, sorry about that op but I'll carry on booking the seats I want if that's ok with you

BitOutOfPractice · 23/04/2018 19:24

Ah, it's one of those AIBU with an op who believes that only her preferences / needs are valid and cannot comprehend that anyone would feel differently.

PoorYorick · 23/04/2018 20:12

I wouldn't want the middle seat. But if I saw the window and aisle were taken, before this thread I would have assumed those two people weren't together. So if I couldn't get my preferred window seat, I might well just take that one.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 23/04/2018 21:52

YABVU! I have reasons for my choice. They are as valid as yours and if I book first- your problem. I have issues with my legs so like the stretch room of the aisle, I'm a nervy flyer/ hate take off so don't want the window and I pee A LOT. Appreciate you're pregnant OP but you are as likely to be up and down letting me out as the other way round if you are sat with me and you have demand the aisle. I wouldn't swap the seat I have chosen so I can fly comfortably for a johnny come lately; your needs don't come into this when I have my own. You should have booked earlier. We do aisle seats or an aisle and middle where possible and book asap to make it happen. If it doesn't, I'll deal but I try and avoid windows.

The only time in the last 20 years I had a window seat it was an accident as I hadn't realised checking in for 2 easyjet flights at once would auto-book, which I won't do normally due to window aversion. Booked with friends on a particular plane so couldn't start again and we booked a bit late. I asked a stewardess if I could move once everyone was accounted for and luckily I could- to a still vacant seat with the consent of the people in that row. No one was forced to move or shitty-eye-rolled in the process and I accepted I could be stuck. Learnt the lesson subsequent bookings, too.

One of our closest friends used to be head of a universiy air safety department. He usually pops up on TV to be interviewed in the aftermath of a plane crash. His recommendation is that the rear of the plane is safest.

TrickyD · 26/04/2018 08:56

These are ours with the baby in the front window seat with his mum and .

...dad. Ignoring our safety friend's advice.😳

MinesaPinot · 26/04/2018 09:09

OP, I'm travelling to and from Mallorca on my own in a few weeks and have booked aisle seats. Is that ok with you?

TOADfan · 26/04/2018 09:13

I flew with jet2 on sunday. I always book the window seat and my boyfriend in the middle. Im fat and i dont like to sit beside a stranger/take part of their seat. Plus i don't pee on flights so sleep most of the way. When we arrived they had us both sitting im aisle seats! I complained but they wouldn't move us. I ended up eyemask and earphones om trying to sleep but repeatedly having everyone, coming dowm the aisle bumping imto my arm, which left a massive bruise! Plus the couple on the inside where not getting out for the loo if i was trying to sleep. Argh never again i hope.

TOADfan · 26/04/2018 09:15

Also what im saying is. You may book a seat on jet2 but you will be lucky if you get it.

belleandsnowwhite · 26/04/2018 09:17

We are a family of 5 so i book a row of 3 and then 2 people across the aisle leaving a window seat free, so we are all sat near each other.

BadLad · 26/04/2018 09:17

I suppose not too many news stories are about planes backing into a mountain. I wonder if that's his thinking.

JacquesHammer · 26/04/2018 09:18

You had an unlucky experience but it’s definitely not my experience of the norm for Jet2 so hopefully won’t happen to you again!

whiteradiator · 26/04/2018 09:23

My friends deliberately book middle seats on empty rows and most of the time they have the whole row to themselves!

hamandpease · 26/04/2018 09:27

badlad 😂

Olddear · 26/04/2018 09:28

Aisle and centre here. I always book the aisle seat since I had hip surgery and need a little extra room to adjust my position as necessary.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/04/2018 09:29

We fly jet2 a lot and always get to sit in the seats we have been allocated at online check in. I don't generally pay for seats and if you check in early enough (you can do this 28 days before your outward flight with jet2) they almost always still give you two together.

The only time we have been moved was because they put a couple with a baby in our original seats, as those had the extra oxygen mask. But we still got the same types of seats, ie window and middle, just on another row.

My thinking on the 'plane crash/position on the plane' issue is that crashes of commercial aircraft are extremely rare and when they do, almost always, everybody dies.

I can't think of many crashes where some people have survived but others have died, it's usually all or nothing, so it's really not a consideration. There was the one that went down on the M1 just outside East Midlands Airport about 30 years ago, but apart from that, they seem to be 100% fatal.

wizbit93 · 26/04/2018 09:30

I haven’t flown for 15 years and am flying with DH and our two DCs soon. We’ve booked wing seats (3 plus aisle) but I’m wondering if it’ll be too claustrophobic feeling. Should I change to the back? I’ve seen that the kids can’t sit in the aisle seat but we could book window and middle (and hope nobody sits next to us so we can spread out!)

TrickyD · 26/04/2018 09:52

Badlad I vaguely renember his reason for choosing rear seats and mountain backing was not involved Grin. I guess it's a matter of statistics.
Despite this we have flown with him several times and he seems quite happy to sit anywhere.

One time some airport staff overheard us talking about his being an air safety inspector. They appeared to think all four of us were. Lots of concerned mutterings, worried looks and excellent treatment on the plane.
Sadly we were heading for Barbados, and were there when the Concorde crashed. Our friend was rung up and asked do an interview by the BBC, but he refused as he was on holiday.

Gromance02 · 26/04/2018 10:14

Some flights charge extra to book seats that leave one in isolation. I know because DH likes the aisle seat and I like the window seat so we tried to book these two seats leaving one in the middle. We would've had to pay about £10 each, each way to do this.
