Still love Disney, unicorns and rainbows and all that crap. I don’t get it. Aibu

I feel the same. I hate Disney. My kids love it so as that's the kind of thing I need a break from now and again. But each to their own. People who like it aren't harming anyone.

justabunchofbunting · 20/04/2018 12:16

I actually have a massive collection of unicorn stuff. It started as a joke and then people kept buying me unicorn themed stuff as gifts because they had seen me with other unicorn themed stuff.... now it has sort of become ingrained and I do think I actually genuinely like unicorns haha
My fave bits are these holographic unicorn prints I have which are simultaneously hideous and amazing. I find it funny but not in a superior way. Im happy that people get genuine joy out of these things, so do I!!

leafblower · 20/04/2018 12:28

I'm 40 and a pretty sour faced old cow. But rainbows and sparkly stuff make me unreasonably happy. I try to suppress it as I realise it makes me look like a naff teenage twat but I have a secret collection of those sparkly beanie baby unicorns, dragons etc. BlushBlushBlush

Dh always buys me a little one when he sees one.

A friend was looking around our house he other day and saw them all where I hidden them in a cupboard and asked why they were hidden away if they were ds's. I said 'he says they need to be kept in the dark.' She probably thinks either ds or I is batshit crazy. GrinBlush

I have a 'friend' who dresses her and her son up as mermaids every year and has photo shoot on rocks on the beach. Last year all of her Waldorf friends crocheted them the tails.

I try very hard not to be a judgey cunt but Dh and I had a bitchy, private snigger about it.

Chouetted · 20/04/2018 12:39

Ooops, hit post too soon.

I meant to say that, yes my emotional development is a little behind, but that doesn't make me a frigging paedophile.

ICantCopeAnymore · 20/04/2018 12:39

So someone has Harry Potter collectibles in their dining room? So? What do you have on display in your house? Things you like to look at, I assume.

I'm Harry Potter mad. I have bits all over my house - doormat, hall mirror, bedding etc. I really don't care what anyone else thinks - It's my home, not theirs.

MrsPreston11 · 20/04/2018 12:44

How can it bother you enough to to start a thread?

50% of our holidays are spent in Disney (Florida/California/Paris) so we have quite a few Disney bits around the house.

Doesn’t mean we’re not responsible adults.....

I don’t give a shit what people decorate their homes with so long as it’s clean!

SparkleBuns · 20/04/2018 12:45

@NooNooHead1981 where did you get that gold metal hand book end! I love it

Minnie13 · 20/04/2018 12:46

You don't have to 'get it'. The beauty of being an adult is freedom of choice, surely? Life becomes a lot more simple when you finally realise the only person you can (and need) to control is yourself.

ThymeLord · 20/04/2018 12:51

That is a cheerful desk NooNoo!

I've just got Peppa pig and a gingerbread moshi monster on mine at the minute. It's looking a little sparse. Might have to bring some more moshi's in Grin

Me and my baby girl have matching Bambi pyjamas. I have 3 different pairs of Little Mermaid PJs and some Tinkerbell ones. I also have unicorn slippers. My house is full of glittery framed artworks saying "starfish wishes and mermaid kisses" etc. Entire Disney collection on DVD. Alexa's playing my Disney playlist on repeat. I have a unicorn cookbook which I used to make DDs Christening cake.

In my opinion you need to embrace this Whole New World. Wish Upon A Star and Let It Go. For The First Time In Forever ask yourself When Will My Life Begin and follow your heart Just Around The River Bend. When you tell yourself So This Is Love you'll know you can Go The Distance. But if not, darling it's better down where it's wetter so forgive me if I'm not Part of Your World

Mia1415 · 20/04/2018 12:55

I love Disney. I work hard in a professional job.

I don't have an easy life (don't want to go into details) and if Disney brings me some happiness then why is that any of your concern?

You do know that different people like different things and that's OK don't you? I personally wouldn't get any enjoyment out of fishing, train spotting or watching a football match, but I wouldn't judge any one else for liking those things.

Wouldn't the world be boring if we were all the same.

I find it incredibly rude to judge people on what their interests are. If school children did it, it would probably be called bullying!

BakedBeans47 · 20/04/2018 12:56

YABU I don’t get it either, but to each their own.

I am sure I like things other people find stupid.

I dunno. I hate Disney and inspirational quotes; however you'd probably hate me as I have a family of stuffed animals with their own voices and personalities and one even has a Twitter account. It's all quite tongue in cheek though.

I love Sponge Bob Square Pants, is that allowed at 39? Sad

NooNooHead1981 · 20/04/2018 13:58

Thank you! It cheers me up! I love all the 'tat' that is associated with 'cute' things like unicorns and rainbows etc... I may be a child at heart, but I have my DH to bring me back down to earth and help keep me sane, organised, boring and adult-like!

The hand book end and unicorn mug on the left were from an online shop called Typo.com, and I think they also have a shop in Westfield if I'm remembering correctly! The other book end is also a bronze hand doing an 'ok' symbol - they are very cool and make my desk look a bit more 'with it' than it actually is! Wink

Redrosebelle · 20/04/2018 13:59

Yabvu and miserly
Go watch a classic Disney and bring a little magic to your life Star

LadyDeadpool · 20/04/2018 14:08

Yabu you know that by now obviously though. It's the spark of childish joy that reminds us of the freedom of being a kid. What's life without the things that make you happy? I don't get magnolia or the obsession with grey walls and matching decor for everything but I do love unicorns, mermaids, comic books, manga, anime and customizing my own monster high dolls.

We're all different and that's fantastic, it'd be so boring if we were all the same and we had to only enjoy certain activities.

If it doesn't effect you in any way, and it's not hurting anyone what harm is it doing?

Peartree17 · 20/04/2018 14:15

OMG, what is going on today with unicorns. Now it's in The Grauniad

Darknessinthevalley · 20/04/2018 14:51

I have a unicorn necklace, it's a small, solid silver, 3d unicorn. My DH bought it for me to cheer me up after a particularly bad term at work. I love Disney, so does my dad. It reminds him of me and my sister being small, a time before his diagnosis.
I also love teddies and have around 50 in my bedroom. In private, I am very childish and I find it very comforting when my DH responds to that with care. My therapist thinks it's because I didn't get much of a childhood. I had to behave very adult very young and getting to be a child helps me feel better.
I'm also autistic though. You'd never know that I love Disney or collect plushies unless you knew me very well. I hope I still qualify as a grown woman. Hmm

newvloggerperhaps · 20/04/2018 15:12

I'm an adult who loves disney although not like other people describe. I love the music and the movies but I don't have stuffed toys and Pj's and stuff. I just really like it. What is there to get about it? the worlds pretty bleek sometimes. It's nice to escape. I also love music and playing instruments. I love travelling. I love reading. I love non disney film. I love craft beer. None of these pass times are any superior to my love of disney.

Though some people do have an unhealthy link to childhood things, sometimes as a result of adverse childhood experiences, I think if some body likes something that is legal and hurts no one else then I don't see what there is to get.

Do their friends/partners not tell them how odd it looks that their house is filled with plastic toys?

My friend has Bon Appetite painted on the kitchen wall and is obsessed with plug in air fresheners. I wouldn't dream of criticising her own house that she lives in.
Just as she doesn't criticize my Funko Pops Smile
