To think two oranges after dinner is too much sugar

They are pretty large navel oranges, two of them (whole not juiced) is probably half your daily sugar allowance so probably not a good idea to eat two after a evening dinner?

I wish our DS would eat oranges. He doesn't like them.

Missing the point entirely....

Newmummy90 · 20/04/2018 20:19

Oh bore off 😴

BlackeyedSusan · 20/04/2018 20:21

two bananas too much for an adult...

ds have two bananas each, more if they can get away with it, must be why they are autistic. eating autistic bananas.

The amount of crap written about what we should or shouldn't be scoffing is enough to drive anyone crazy nuts (good fats, protein, minerals, but oh those nasty enzymes better sprout them, lectins, mould, are they raw?, what about nut allergies, do peanuts count - smooth or crunchy, peanut butter saviour of bodybuilders or processed food of satan, unless they're coconuts of course - in which case the oil/sugar/flour/ will cure everything - or kill you because the fat is saturated... and that's just nuts, ffs)
But Are they Terry’s? made my day.

Icanttakemuchmore · 20/04/2018 21:09

I eat a couple of oranges a day and some melon and some pineapple . Better for you than chocolate

GallicosCats · 20/04/2018 21:22

why did you child have open access to naval oranges?

Quite so. You shouldn't be letting him roam around NAAFI stores unsupervised. Don't the Armed Forces have rules about that sort of thing?

Butchmanda · 20/04/2018 21:22

Can't believe how rude people are here. Perfectly reasonable question. Although I would be worried it would make them bloated eating it after a meal. I couldn't stomach two oranges after dinner. I prefer to use fruit for snacks and then only one portion as pudding, but each to their own. OP I don't think you're bonkers at all.

TawnyPort · 20/04/2018 21:25

Its not a perfectly reasonable question.

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 21:27

I heard that if you put fruit in the chocolate the calories cancel each other out.

nannykatherine · 20/04/2018 21:36

it's fruits
fruits is healthy
it's not refined sugar
relax

sleepylittlebunnies · 20/04/2018 21:38

2 oranges after dinner wouldn’t bloat me at all, in fact it would help clear me out. Used to give them to DS when he suffered with constipation 😳

CasanovaFrankenstein · 20/04/2018 21:40

So how is the sugar in fruit different to that in a packet? Packet sugar is just extracted plant sugar.

When you eat the fruit you get the fibre and vitamins etc, I guess that's what's meant.

I'd say two oranges is quite acidic after a meal, could be a bit gas-inducing! Plus needs to be at least an hour before brushing teeth?

Sn0tnose · 20/04/2018 22:08

My three year old ate two Go Aheads after tea today. She tricked us. She asked me for one, scarfed it then asked her dad for one and pretended it was her first. I'm loving her style Grin

applesareredandgr33n · 20/04/2018 22:41

LOL

Lookatmeimsandradeeee · 20/04/2018 22:51

Absolutely bonkers thread. Of course it’s perfectly fine to eat two oranges after dinner..... absolutely bonkers to think otherwise!!!

Teacher22 · 21/04/2018 07:47

Oranges are good for you and the sugar per in them is not concentrated.

Oliversmumsarmy · 21/04/2018 07:55

I thought the difference was
One was fruit sugars and one was from cane sugar.

Moxiebelle · 21/04/2018 08:04

The sugar in an orange is the same as normal table sugar but the orange also contains fibre and vitamins which makes it a lot more satisfying and healthy. Even if you can eat 2 you couldn't eat 10 but you could easily eat 10 tsp of sugar in an ice cream or large glass of juice or sweet drink.

reallyanotherone · 21/04/2018 08:17

*I thought the difference was

Yes. But what is the difference between cane and fruit sugar?

Answer is none. Both are plant sugars. Sucrose. They are chemically the same, and there is absolutely no difference in the way the body processes them.

The difference is that eating fruit also contains fibre, vitamins, and other essential nutrients. A cup of tea with a teaspoon of table sugar not so much.

“Empty calories” refers to refined sugar alone. So that cup of tea or a can of coke is empty calories, because it is the calories alone- sugar used for energy with no other nutritional value.

PoorYorick · 21/04/2018 08:21

Isn't it fructose in fruit?

peachypetite · 21/04/2018 08:24

Jesus Christ. Only on mumsnet.

eloisesparkle · 21/04/2018 08:30

Does anyone know how much sugar would be in an individual wine gum or Haribo sweet approximately ?

Icanttakemuchmore · 21/04/2018 08:34

If you start telling your child they can't eat fruit you'll be making a big mistake imo.

supersop60 · 21/04/2018 08:58

Those bloody self serving orange trees - how dare they make fruit full of sugar to protect their seeds!! And don't get me started on cows and their lactose. Self, self, self.
