To think two oranges after dinner is too much sugar

They are pretty large navel oranges, two of them (whole not juiced) is probably half your daily sugar allowance so probably not a good idea to eat two after a evening dinner?

The 'sugar' in fruit is not the same as sugar that you get in a packet...

How not?

Your bog standard packet of granulated sugar is mainly sucrose. Which is frutose and glucose. Sucrose being the main “sugar” found in oranges and othe fruit...

Most sugar is refined from sugar beet or cane. Which are plants. That just happen to have high naturally occurring levels of sucrose.

So how is the sugar in fruit different to that in a packet? Packet sugar is just extracted plant sugar.

KeneftYakimoski · 20/04/2018 07:54

Most woo-bollocks nutrition nonsense is living in the 19th century. Specifically, Vitalism.

it's like people who think that honey, brown sugar, blackstrap molasses are somehow different to refined cane sugar. Nope.

JustDanceAddict · 20/04/2018 07:59

Bananas are way more sugary than an orange anyway. But it’s still ridiculous to ask. It’s easy to educate yourself on nutrition.

Ninaandme · 20/04/2018 17:32

@sleepylittlebunnies 😂😂😂

Idontdowindows · 20/04/2018 17:33

I just had custard and banana, when will my teeth fall out?

Fandangos · 20/04/2018 17:35

I’d be more concerned about 2 big oranges causing an upset tum.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/04/2018 17:53

Oh, brother, you need to get a grip.

FaveNumberIs2 · 20/04/2018 17:53

I’d be more concerned about the amount of citric acid, which would give me indegestion.

Besides which, you can’t compare spoons of refined sugar to naturally occurring sugars in a piece of fruit! Get over yourself and eat the damn oranges.

Booboo66 · 20/04/2018 17:54

The fibre in whole fruit negate the impact of the fructose on blood sugar - that’s why it’s different. Someone tried to tell me the other day that having a banana was just the same as a can of full sugar coke. People really believe this!

WTFiswrongwithpeople · 20/04/2018 17:59

I had gestational diabetes and every time I ate an orange my blood sugar levels shot up. Also because of the acidity it’s best to not let him brush his teeth until an hour after he’s eaten as it helps brush off his enamel otherwise. Fruit is great because of all it’s nutrients and the sugars break down differently compared to refined sugar but you shouldn’t have 5 fruits for your 5 a day. And anyone that thinks a glass of juice counts towards your 5 a day as it says so on the packet, then you’re a dumb arse.

Yb23487643 · 20/04/2018 18:05

2 oranges after dinner does sound like too much sugar & acid for my stomach. I’d happily have the same amount of sugar mixed with days in a big non-ulcer inducing chocolate bar tho. Each to their own.

justabunchofbunting · 20/04/2018 18:11

Not in the average context.
If it were a toddler and it was every single day on top of other fruit throughout the day then id be a bit worried... but only a bit and mostly about their teeth if anything!

two oranges is completely fine for a grown adult. Yes they contain sugar but they also contain alot of fibre and other useful nutrients. They are in general a good thing to eat.

And the banana stuff was ridiculous. Bananas contain more calories than you would expect and in fact do rival a can of full fat coke for calories.... however bananas are also very good for you whereas coke it basically just sugar and water.... so of course eating a banana is better than drinking a can of coke!!

Unless you are solely focused on weight loss in which case they would seem equal.... altho theres a lot to be said for how filling bananas are... youd be less likely to eat loads of crap if you ate a banana whereas coke does not fill you up at all.

Dont bother wasting your time worrying about oranges. They are far better than orange juice alone because of the fibre and the fact they are actually filling so you cant just much through ten like you could drink juice.

Smudge100 · 20/04/2018 18:12

I just had two glasses of wine. Probably more sugar than even one of the oranges, none of the vit C and fibre and loads more calories. But hey, it rocks.

jessebuni · 20/04/2018 18:17

Personally I’d be less worried about the sugar and more about varying the fruit. At home my children get 5 a day plus of fruit and veg but usually only 2 are fruit. Or at least the sweet kind of fruit, tomatoes I sort of stick in a “salad” category. Anyway I would rather they have two different types of fruit rather than two oranges but still 1 oranges is healthier than biscuits or chocolate so I wouldn’t be worried about eating two pieces of fruit after dinner.

SoggyOtter · 20/04/2018 18:19

I once worked with a morbidly obese guy. 5’2 and 27 stone. He proudly announced that he didn’t drink fruit juice or eat apples etc as his dentist had told him it contained acid and was bad for his teeth. We sat astounded and watched him drink his way through TWO AND A HALF 2L bottles of Coca Cola in one day. On top of this, he ate 3 large cakes at 10.30am, a family pack of skittles, 2 footlong subways and 2 cookies for lunch, and then 2 large bars of dairy milk by 3pm. Then he would have 2 evening meals - one with mum, one with Nan. Both potato / meat based. This was an average day for him. It’s sad. We tried to help and advise but he was convinced fruit was evil and damaging. Felt sorry for him.

pollymere · 20/04/2018 18:27

A bottle of Johnson's Orange juice happily claims to contain the juice of three oranges. One day I clocked how quickly I'd swig that. Two oranges, including all that fibre sounds ok to me.

Roversandrhodes · 20/04/2018 18:28

Good lord ,why would you be arsed either way ?

gryffen · 20/04/2018 18:37

I've read some daft things on MN, but that about tops the lot!

mumofmany81 · 20/04/2018 19:21

Too much fibre (e.g. fruit) is actually very bad for young children, as it can prevent their bodies from absorbing key nutrients such as iron.

Bettiedraper

That's not a great example since you need vitamin C to help your body absorb iron so eating oranges actually helps with the iron level

cheval · 20/04/2018 19:34

When did oranges become the enemy? This must be a wind-up. It’s a fruit, eat them and consider yourself lucky you have access to its nutrients.

reallyanotherone · 20/04/2018 19:40

Not heard this before. Can you point me to the evidence please? Everything i can find only says too much in under 2’s can fill them up so they eat less. Nothing about fibre affecting nutrient uptake. Which i can’t see a mechanism for because fibre doesn’t have an effect on vitamin uptake...

PoorYorick · 20/04/2018 19:57

I've been fat several times in my life, and at various different slimming clubs. Not one of us was there because we ate too many oranges or bananas.
