To think private school is not 'all that?'

malificent7 · 15/04/2018 15:11

I went to a very exclusive private school. Hated it, didnt thrive and have done no better than my state educated peers.

Loved my state and was gutted as i was taken out in year 8 to go to a posh school.

As a result im a complete leftie. I know some thrive at private but i wasnt one of them.

Aibu to wish state schools were funded better though thus cancelling the need for private at all cost.Never going to haooen though. The rich think they are a cut above.

You could throw the entire national budget and then some at state schools and people will (rightly) still have the choice to use a state school, a private school or home educate.

In short, some people have the right personality to thrive no matter the circumstances, some people don't have the skill set. Sorry your experience was lacking.

I would definitely like to see better funding for the state sector, but some people will always think private is better, just because they have to pay for it.

FWIW, I agree that private education isn't necessarily any better than state. A lot of my friends were privately educated, and I don't think they are any better educated than I am. Nor are they any happier or more successful.

malificent7 · 15/04/2018 15:23

I guess i feel that parents are a bit musguided if they think it is 'better'.I guess it depends on the child and school.

Is anyone going to disagree with the statement of “to wish state schools were better funded”?

Of course not. No matter whether someone agrees with private education or not, nobody is going to disagreee with that. Pointless AIBU.

DairyisClosed · 15/04/2018 15:23

I went to a private school. It did wonders for me. It literally changed my life. Just because you are a failure doesn't mean that the children with the right mindset and work ethic can't get a lot out if private school. The point of a private school is to give you the chance to have a wonderful education not to force it on you.

malificent7 · 15/04/2018 15:24

Surely we pay for state schools through taxes ?

OP posts:
pinkhorse · 15/04/2018 15:24

I had friends that went to a very expensive private school and I went to a state school. I got better exam results than them and have a better career than them. A waste of money imo

Noqonterf · 15/04/2018 15:25

Depends on the school and the child themselves.

malificent7 · 15/04/2018 15:27

Just because im a failure? wtf!!! haha!!

i failed at loving private school@!Did fab academically though! About to start second degree in fact. But yes i did fail at being loke a rich kid!!

Love mn for goadyness!

Guess what? All schools are different! I know! It’s mind blowing isn’t it?

Some schools are crap.
Some schools are marvellous.
Some schools are in between.

State or private is irrelevant.

With your OP being a very good example of this.

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 15:28

Silly statement. It depends on too many variables. I loved my private school and all my friends from there have gone on to very successful careers. This won't be the case for everyone there, however, just as there will be plenty of people who went to the local state who've been v successful.

YANBU to want more funding for state schools. Biscuit for wanting to get rid of private and therefore people's freedom to make a choice.

SaucyJane · 15/04/2018 15:29

A second degree also means nothing except that you can afford to pay the fee for a second degree.

(I say this as someone with 2 degrees and a MA!)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/04/2018 15:30

Given the wide variety in quality and provision in both state and private schools, and the fact that children are individuals, you can’t make a huge generalisation like this, based only on your own experience of school.

Some state schools will be better than some private ones, and vice versa. Some children will thrive private schools and some in state ones. Some, like my dh, will be sinking in one private school but will thrive when they are moved to a different one.

incywincybitofa · 15/04/2018 15:30

Every child deserves the best education- whole child education.
Not every private school is elitist, or academic hot housing there are some very child centered schools out there in the independent sector.
It's not always about the exam results when you choose to send your child to a private school.

Batfurger · 15/04/2018 15:30

This sounds like a first world problem. You were given a fantastic opportunity, it didn’t suit you. I doubt it didn’t suit you in a “having lessons in a portacabin because someone set fire to the building” way.

You’re doing a second degree which as we all know is the watermark for academic success Hmm

So... what’s your problem? Perhaps you should move on...

PrawnBhuna · 15/04/2018 15:30

Ha, you may be doing a second degree but you seem to have missed out on learning about irony given this thread is up there with the goadiest opening I’ve ever seen on MN!

Seriously, what are you hoping to get from this?

Hoppinggreen · 15/04/2018 15:31

What soupdragon said
MY child’s private school is better for HER than OUR LOCAL Comp

malificent7 · 15/04/2018 15:33

I guess i wouldn't get rid of private as people have to have a choice but im fed up if being seen as a bastion of good education.

I worked at a well known private school once as a teacher and the behaviour was horrendous...wouldn't stand for it at the comp.

Im going to be goady and say it's snobby...my parents felt it was social climbing.

I wish there was more funding for schools. My kids are in state schools. If I could afford to send them to a private school I would- I loved all mine.

I see the differences in resources, facilities, class sizes etc. Would I love to give my kids that? Yes.

However, if they hated private school and were thriving in a state school Id be equally happy.

grumpy4squash · 15/04/2018 15:36

I didn't like my posh private school either, but was academically successful and have very good professional career.

You can like or not like any school, though, I don't think the exchange of money is the key thing.

Sty90 · 15/04/2018 15:36

DH as a employer, doesn’t look at what schools people attended. He feels that it’s irrelevant, so are grades to an extent. All he is looking for is experience, willingness and work ethic.
