Hi All

I really would like to know if IABU or not, so dd is not yet two and only just started talking. She can say thank you (well she says cue but we know what she means .

We went to the shop today for her treat as she has done really well with her potty training this week and we promised her a little choccy bar. We walked down and when I let her choose she was so excited, picked one and we went to the till. The shop was packed so she had been holding it for about 5 mins before we got to the till then I took it of her for the lady to scan and dd had a small winge.

The shop lady then says to dd loudly "well if your going to be like that your not having it back until you say thank you" whilst holding it out to dd? I said she doesnt talk actually and dd is quite shy around strangers so I knew she wouldn't. The shop assistant just looked at dd and said "well are you going to say thank you" dd is now hiding in my legs looking at me really upset. I said to the woman look she isn't going to say thank you and she said "oh i'm not sure you really deserve this then" before handing it over to me.

I think the reason i'm upset is because dd was so excited as she hardly gets sweets/choccy at all and I really thought this witch had spoilt it and made it look like dd had no manners to everyone else in the shop.

Please tell me if i'm just being hormonal or if this woman is actually mad?

Wilkie · 12/05/2007 20:14

(I) Wilkie sits her fat middle class ass down next to SM and tries some electric soup (WTF is that??? )

gess · 12/05/2007 20:14

ds1 can't talk (aged 8) so this sort of thing happens quite a lot. I just answer for him, but in a way I make it clear that its him that's answering using 'we' etc. Mind you he's usua;;y behaving appallingly at checkouts etc so people are looking at him rather than talking to him that works too.

That was in respnse to the OP if anyone's still talking about it rather than xenia outrage

Yes, of course but most of Scotland which tends to be worse off than England has a bigger obesity problem than England. The middle class parts of Edinburgh are probably like the healthier eating bits of other parts of the UK, that's all I meant.

I find it astonishing that you don't want to do what the Government thinks is important to do - work out why the working classes tend to be fatter and tend to die younger and tend not to breastfeed so much. Have I hit on some kind of ultra PC we must not say some things area?

It's very important to do look at groups of people and find out why XYZ group has more of a problem than another, surely and then you might find the reason and help those people. Chinese boys tend to do well at school and Afro Caribbean boys on the whole don't. It's useful to study that to try to find out the causes and sort it out. If you're too PC to study it then the group itself suffers surely.

xenia - keep it coming the voice of daily mail sensibilities

obimomkanobi · 12/05/2007 20:16

All this 'reward' business is a crock of shite anyway.

Might work on dogs, even working class dogs, but it doesn't really work on kids.

And as for class, I do think it's amusing how the desperately aspirational middle classes (ala xenia)are still clinging on to obsolete class definitions.

And the notion of anyone referring to 'U' and 'non U' in this day and age is hysterical.

Jennylee · 12/05/2007 20:17

xenia, that is not what you were saying earlier

If you want to backtrack however that is fine, by us, we know you are wrong to issue such generalisations abotu working class people and the fact that you see that brings a tear to my eye..

sorry wasn't a tear was big smudge of grease from a bag o' chips, my mistake

gess · 12/05/2007 20:17

I thought it might have aviatrix.

Behaviourism done properly works exceedingly well.

Jennylee · 12/05/2007 20:18

can spell wont spell, as I would be letting my class down, by being overly clever - according to the mighty Xenia, please xenia can you teach me to read? (touches forelock)

madoldcatlady · 12/05/2007 20:19

Winston Churchill, very working class. Fat bastard. Oh and the Queen Mum, I mean she died so young and it was all due to being so fat and working class.

Jennylee · 12/05/2007 20:19

gees a fiver to get my teeth filled doll won't ya?

Judy1234 · 12/05/2007 20:20

In what way did I back track? I said more working class are fat and use sweets as a rewards than the middle classes. That's true and the working classes need to do their best to change or they'll die early of heart disease and get diabetes and not be able to run for buses either.

ScottishMummy · 12/05/2007 20:20

Judy1234 · 12/05/2007 20:22

" More than half of men and almost half of women in the recent Scottish Health Survey were above the recommended weight: 40% of men and 30% of women were classified as overweight while 16% of men and 17% of women were obese. And nearly 26% of men and 27.1% of women in social classes I and II were either overweight or obese compared with 33% of men and 43% of women in social classes IV and V. The prevalence of obesity was slightly higher in Scotland than in England."
www.scotland.gov.uk/library/documents1/chap2.htm

Actually that's not a massive difference 27% obese social class 1 and 2 and 43% 4 and 5. But still backs up what I said.

Flamesparrow · 12/05/2007 20:23

@ not being able to run for buses!!!

Jennylee · 12/05/2007 20:23

I'm too lazy to run for buses being working class, don't insult me - I mean running, that would be ....healthy I'd be upgraded to lower middle class if I got seen running for a bus

You make me laugh Xenia. I don't think I've ever come across such a degree of snobbery in RL. (But then how would I in my lowly circles)

I'm very happy for you that you are so much better than the rest of us slum wallowers.

Wilkie · 12/05/2007 20:24

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz - is anyone actually listening anymore Xenia????

SM and J - it's good stuff (I) although my ass just got bigger

Elasticwoman · 12/05/2007 20:25

When I was at college about 20 years ago, we were presented with some "research evidence" about middle v working class educational achievement. On being asked to define working class and middle class for the purposes of this study, the professor said it went on the academic qualifications of the mother eg, no O levels = working class. (I kid you not). To which I said "Oh just like Princess Di."

She was sooooooo working class wasn't she?

Apparently the study had cost £600,000 to complete.
