Tutors for SATS?

I don't understand this. I thought SATS results were really just to check that the school's meeting expected standards? Why would you book private tuition for your child, to prepare for them?

Two families I know are doing this, but the two children involved are achieving way above average in Maths and English.

Am I missing a trick here? Thanks

3asabird’s first post demonstrates perfectly how overly invested we have become in our children’s education. I could feel the anxiety pouring from that post. This modern phenomenon of over tutoring stems from that kinds of anxious over investment, and a refusal to accept that most kids will simply be average.

You're not really missing anything. SATs are primarily used to measure school performance and to give secondary schools an indication of where children are academically. For most children, there's no need for intensive tutoring if they're already doing well.
That said, some parents use SATs tuition because they also have one eye on the 11+ or simply want to build confidence before secondary school. My child did a few SATs revision sessions with Pass 11 Plus Grammar, and it was more about filling in small gaps and getting familiar with the question style than trying to boost scores for the sake of it.
For a child who's already working well above the expected standard, I'd probably just encourage regular reading and practice at home rather than lots of extra tuition.
