Windrush Petition

Theworldisfullofidiots · 13/04/2018 23:29

Please would you consider signing this petition to provide amnesty for the windrush children who either lived most of their whole lives here or in some cases were born here but the home office has lost their paper work. The home office is a shambles but being successful in creating their hostile environment.
These people have lived their whole lives here because we asked their parents to work here. They had commonwealth status and then the rules were changed .

Thankyou, Theworld. I read about this yesterday, and it was just terrifying to see the depths we've sunk to as a country, trying to turn people into non-persons and non-citizens just as they're reaching old age, having been citizens and worked here all their adult lives.
Funny how suddenly Michael Braithwaite's problem was resolved when it looked as if his persecution was going to become public knowledge:
"Within minutes of the article about Braithwaite going online the Home Office had emailed his lawyers to say the documents had been approved." (The Guardian, April 13).
Signed the petition, of course.

Article in the Guardian about Church of England bishops urging people to sign the petition:

This is absolutely fucking disgusting.

peacheachpearplum · 14/04/2018 14:53

My husband would be in this position but in the late 80s, can't remember the year, you had the opportunity to take up British citizenship and were warned that if you didn't your status would change. There was publicity about it, I nagged my husband to do it and I am glad he did.

We have since found the shipping records showing when he came here, he came in 1940s so I would imagine people can trace their arrival date that way.

margaritasbythesea · 14/04/2018 14:58

Thanks for highlighting this. I had no idea. Disgraceful shower this government.

DancingLedge · 14/04/2018 15:10

But proving your arrival date is not enough.
The rules have been changed: you must be able to provide 4 pieces of evidence for each year that you have been in the UK. 4 things . Every year. Eg Council tax bill in your name, utility bill, school registration, etc etc.
For each year, going back to the eighties. The school you went to ,the doctors you were registered at, companies you worked for, even councils you paid tax to, may no longer even exist.

peacheachpearplum · 14/04/2018 15:14

DancingLedge that is why it was better to do it in the 80s when the rules changed, I don't know why people didn't unless they are all like my husband who didn't think it was important.

Ghanagirl · 14/04/2018 15:17

Quite a lot of people were children or v young adults in the 80s

SianRunner · 14/04/2018 15:45

I don't remember any publicity in the 80s. Was it directed at Caribbean incomers only, or all Commonwealth incomers? I was at university in the UK and recall zilch.

peacheachpearplum · 14/04/2018 15:45

I thought it only affected people who came here before 1971 so even if they arrived as a babe in arms they weren't children by the late 80s.

n0ne · 14/04/2018 15:50

Signed! My mum came over in '65 so this is an issue close to my heart.

DoctorTwo · 14/04/2018 15:58

Signed. I despair at how this country treats its poor, immigrants and the disabled.

ArcheryAnnie · 14/04/2018 16:03

Signed, and thank you for bringing this to my attention, OP. There's several local cases of this in my neighbourhood.

pointythings · 14/04/2018 16:12

Signed this a couple of days ago when it was just kicking off. Even the Daily Fail are now running a story about the plight of the Windrush children. It's appalling and shameful that this is happening in a supposedly civilised country, but le's face it - lots of people have just lapped up the anti-immigrant rhetoric and voted for the parties promoting it. Maybe some of them will now see what it is they've been accepting so eagerly and what doing so makes them - racists and xenophobes.

Chesntoots · 14/04/2018 16:16

Signed. Thanks for making me aware.
