Just seen on another thread.

Mine had full fat until a few months ago and I swapped to semi skimmed so I wasn't buying 2 milks. And I've been informed by oldest (6) its semi at school.

Should I still be giving them full fat? They're both 50%-ish height and weight, can be taller and slimmer when in growth spurts.

Adding in, they tend to have porridge for breakfast, or rice krispies, and then some days have a glass later, so they're not having tons of milk. (Extra carton on school days)

10 year old on semi and has been since he turned 2.

7 year old and 10 month old (for cereal) on full fat. 7 year old is skinny as a rake and skirts close to the low end of his healthy weight so needs all the fat he can get IMO.

The8thMonth · 13/04/2018 12:09

We use full fat milk in our home. We don't have milk as a beverage. So it's only in food: porridge, white sauce and pasta, etc.

Coulddowithanap · 13/04/2018 12:10

Ours have semi skimmed, it's the only milk we buy unless the shop runs out then we get full fat.

SecretBum · 13/04/2018 12:10

For kids on the 50th percentile weight I would switch to semi skimmed at 2.

Coolaschmoola · 13/04/2018 12:10

Full fat for DD6 and DH. Semi for me and cooking.

HeadSpin5 · 13/04/2018 12:11

Same as CoolaSchmoola - Full Fat for DD5, semi or skimmed for me and DP.

bobstersmum · 13/04/2018 12:12

I give mine (4+5) full fat but I am fully aware they can have semi skimmed. If their weight was an issue I would give semi but one ds is very skinny and the other normal and very very active. So full fat it is.

bottleofredplease · 13/04/2018 12:12

I don't think cows milk is good for people. It is for baby cows. It is made to make them grow rapidly. Only the countries with obesity problems drink milk.

Hope that's not too goady Grin

Shannaratiger · 13/04/2018 12:13

Mine have semi-skimmed, however recent research says would be better with full fat because of all the fat soluble vitamins. Also fat is a much healthier source of calories than carbohydrates.

seafoodeatit · 13/04/2018 12:13

We only buy full fat milk so what's they have.

fuzzywuzzy · 13/04/2018 12:13

Full fat for everyone.

drspouse · 13/04/2018 12:13

Plenty of individuals are obese and don't drink milk.

Makingworkwork · 13/04/2018 12:13

Oatly barista milk. The closest non dairy milk to full fat.

drspouse · 13/04/2018 12:14

(Semi for everyone over 2)

bottleofredplease · 13/04/2018 12:15

It's also a very cruel industry, worse than the meat industry in many aspects.

Kim82 · 13/04/2018 12:16

Semi skimmed for all once over the age of 2. My 3.5 year old drinks unsweetened almond milk though as she has a dairy allergy.

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 13/04/2018 12:16

I buy red and blue sometimes the really creamy gold one, baby has formula older children drink whatever milk they fancy , i use red

RitaMills · 13/04/2018 12:16

We use whole milk, DS is really skinny so he gets full fat versions of everything. He drinks it and has it in cereal. Whole milk tastes better as well in coffee and sauces.

SaucyJack · 13/04/2018 12:16

I buy full fat, but DD3 is the only one who drinks just milk and I water it down for her.

Cath2907 · 13/04/2018 12:18

Skim for me and hubby and gold top for the underweight 7yr old DD.

QueenOfMyWorld · 13/04/2018 12:18

Semi skimmed same as us

Pinkkahori · 13/04/2018 12:19

Full fat here. Kids are 9 and 11. I think sometimes people think full fat means full of fat. The milk we drink has 3.5g of fat per 100ml.
They don't drink a huge amount of milk as it is and daily recommended intake of fat for children is I think between 40g - 70g a day depending on age of child.

Below is from NHS guidelines:

Fat
High in fat: more than 17.5g of fat per 100g
Low in fat: 3g of fat or less per 100g

Saturated fat (saturates)
High in saturates: more than 5g of saturates per 100g
Low in saturates: 1.5g of saturates or less per 100g

Babyplaymat · 13/04/2018 12:19

We are not a big milk drinking family. I take all drinks black and may have a dribble on cereal. Kids don't really drink it but have it on cereal. DH has in tea. It only really gets used in porridge and his hot drinks.

I buy full fat organic

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/04/2018 12:20

DD is 17 months and on blue milk. She's on 50th centile for height and weight and If she still is then she'll go onto green milk after she's 2.
