What milk do you give your children?

Just seen on another thread.

Mine had full fat until a few months ago and I swapped to semi skimmed so I wasn't buying 2 milks. And I've been informed by oldest (6) its semi at school.

Should I still be giving them full fat? They're both 50%-ish height and weight, can be taller and slimmer when in growth spurts.

Skimmed for me and semi for everyone else. I don’t like the taste of full fat.

TheOriginalEmu · 13/04/2018 14:57

My eldest was a total milk monster as a small child, to the exclusion of most food tbh. My younger 2 would never drink any milk after being weaned from breastmilk at about 18months or so. i used to buy Semi, now i hardly ever buy milk as none of us really drink it, if i do its usually semi.

Snoringhouselion · 13/04/2018 15:01

Anything other than full fat is an abomination.

Awrite · 13/04/2018 15:03

Full fat for all of us. We are all thin.

All the other milks are too sugary.

Cuppaoftea · 13/04/2018 15:05

Blue top.

chimpandzee · 13/04/2018 15:07

Full fat milk is not high fat. In fact it's reasonably low in fat. It's just marketing of semi-skimmed and skimmed millk as healthier that fools people in to thinking full fat isn't healthy.

There's no added sugar in skimmed or semi. Sugar content for semi, skimmed and full fat cows milk is almost identical.

Carboholic · 13/04/2018 15:09

Until recently, full for DS 19mo and cooking, semi skimmed for DH and me. Then we decided that sugar is evil and not the fat, and the fatty stuff tastes so luxuriously creamy after years on semi skimmed, that we are all on full fat. Screw the skimmed stuff.

soupforbrains · 13/04/2018 15:12

I was told by doctors etc to give DS full fat cows milk only until age 5 since then he has had semi skimmed. I don't drink tea or coffee and we don't eat breakfast cereal though so I rarely have any milk in the house (only for baking sometimes) but I know he drinks semi-skimmed at my parents too.

cliffdiver · 13/04/2018 15:15

DDs aged 4 and 6 have whole milk - as a drink and also in cereal.

DH and I have skimmed.

ElephantsYeah · 13/04/2018 15:17

Breast milk and coconut milk. DS is allergic to cows milk. If he wasn't, I'd give him full fat.

ElephantsYeah · 13/04/2018 15:18

He's 2.

RepealRepealRepeal · 13/04/2018 15:19

Full fat.

We're an ex dairy farm so I grew up on milk straight from the tank. Anything less than full fat simply doesn't even taste like milk to me. My DC love goats milk though, so they'll drink that if we have any.

Windy, if you're still about, I'd love to pm, and pick your brains on the logistics of organic farming.

StylishDuck · 13/04/2018 15:21

DD(3) drinks full fat, but she only has it with porridge in the morning and a cup before bed at night unless I've used it in cooking.

We have semi-skimmed but only in tea/coffee and cereal. We're not big milk drinkers. I can't stand full fat in tea or I would just buy one kind.

DD drinks breastmilk but then he's only 3 months Grin

StylishDuck · 13/04/2018 15:22

*DS that should be

NorthEndGal · 13/04/2018 15:25

Homo milk always! We do have to buy two versions, one lactose free, but they get used fast enough they don't clutter up the fridge.
The fats are good for you, and make it taste better.

Mamimawr · 13/04/2018 15:25

Whole milk for all three, 10, 7 and 4 year old. Mainly because of the fat soluble vitamins. It's a low fat drink anyway.

Iceweasel · 13/04/2018 15:27

Full fat milk for both myself and DC (11 years old).

LaurieMarlow · 13/04/2018 15:30

Full fat. Milk isn't high in fat anyway, I'm not sure why semi skimmed/skimmed ever became such a big thing.

formerbabe · 13/04/2018 15:31

Full fat for my dc (7 and 10). I can't be bothered with buying two milks so we use it too.

BlackeyedSusan · 13/04/2018 15:31

Whole milk for Ds . Unsweetened soya for dd.

ThereIsIron · 13/04/2018 15:32

Just stopped full fat. Now semi all around - 8/13/16

rosybell · 13/04/2018 15:33

Organic full fat for all of us.

Apparently full fat milk is still a low fat product.

DialsMavis · 13/04/2018 15:34

Oat or almond or cashew me, Full fat organic for DS and DH & DD flit between plant milk and cows milk... they are coming over to the light (my Wink) side though

Turnocks34 · 13/04/2018 15:49

19 month old mainly has breast milk/semi skimmed milk.

4 year old has semi skimmed milk.

Both also partial to chocolate milk.

mindutopia · 13/04/2018 15:59

Full fat as it’s the only thing we buy in our house anyway. It’s healthy for them to have fat (why we drink it ourselves) and tastes nicer.
