What milk do you give your children?

Just seen on another thread.

Mine had full fat until a few months ago and I swapped to semi skimmed so I wasn't buying 2 milks. And I've been informed by oldest (6) its semi at school.

Should I still be giving them full fat? They're both 50%-ish height and weight, can be taller and slimmer when in growth spurts.

Nut milks with occasional Alpro Soya growing up milk (not every day because it's very sweet). They mostly have cashew or almond.

noeffingidea · 13/04/2018 12:46

semiskimmed milk lacks nutrients because a lot of the fat soluble nutrients are skimmed off with the cream
That would only be relevant if milk was the only source of these nutrients. It isn't though, so they can be obtained from other foods.
We don't buy much milk now, but when I did I bought full fat until they were 5, then semiskimmed. None of us like full fat milk, to put it politely.

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 12:48

Laughing at the vegan expressing incredulity that people “really think we are meant to drink milk from cows”. Surely this thread isn’t the first time you have noticed what a popular drink it is? Hmm

LittleOwl153 · 13/04/2018 12:48

Thanksforallthefish Its school attitudes like that which make my blood boil! My dd8 came home spouting their 'healthy eating' bollocks. I spent the following weekend re-educating her on balanced diet and real nutritional based healthy eating. We looked at a few yoghurts - low fat and otherwise and worked out the sugar and calories in each, we also looked at the artificial ingredients - if you can't easily read an ingredient name you should probably check out what it is before expecting your body to handle it!

My kids are both sporty and a rule I have is if you don't eat whatever the previous meal is then you can't do the activity. For example if you don't eat breakfast then you cannot swim as you will not have the necessary energy.

Milk has lots of vitamins etc. I used full fat milk as I prefer the taste - we use skimmed to make frothy choc etc as it froths better. If you are worried about kids weight then they need to be more active not worry about what they eat!

Lovesagin · 13/04/2018 12:48

Full fat here for all of us. I sometimes water it down a bit if I'm using it in one of my breakfast drink things though.

Lovesagin · 13/04/2018 12:49

(ignore the detailer people!)

HarshingMyMellow · 13/04/2018 12:50

Me and Dd drink almond milk, she still has a glass of semi-skimmed every now and then but tends to lean towards the almond milk the majority of the time.

PrettyLittIeThing · 13/04/2018 12:51

No milk for mine, I bf all till 2 year + and never introduced milk as a drink after stopping. They have it on cereal and that but not as a drink.

JessieMcJessie · 13/04/2018 12:52

But surely almond milk is only for baby almonds? Wink

MrsPreston11 · 13/04/2018 12:53

Thanks for the helpful input all.

People with the whole "cows milk is more baby cows" stuff can calm down.

My kids breastfed until they were 3.5 & 4. Both self weaned. Didn't drink any other milk until then, but had blue milk (or almond as that's what I have) in cereal etc.

So I am aware what milk humans are meant to have, thanks.

But short of sucking on my own boobs, and pumping myself forever for my kids who decided they no longer wanted to breastfeed I'm happy with an alternative......

None. DC now 7 and have refused all types of milk since 12 months. Don't blame them, I think it's rank. Milk is certainly not essential.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 13/04/2018 12:59

Unfortunately OP, it's inevitable if you ask a question like this you're going to get a load of dipshit comments about humans not being meant to drink the milk of another species, apparently from people who don't understand the concepts of evolution or lactase persistence. I don't know why. I know a vegan evolutionary biologist, so being opposed to milk drinking and being stupid aren't inevitable bedfellows.

Humans are omnivores. Some, not all of us evolved the lactase persistence gene, which has been a considerable evolutionary advantage if you look at how fast it's spread. This is not to say one should drink it, of course.

Some people have ethical issues with drinking the milk of another species, which is a personal call and they have every right to think that. Others of us, like me, don't have a problem with it and have the lactase persistence gene, but don't drink milk because it tastes fucking minging.

In answer to the OP, full fat as the kids are young.

halfwitpicker · 13/04/2018 13:05

15 month old has full fat, 4 year old has the same as me and DH, 1%.

stargirl1701 · 13/04/2018 13:07

DH, DD1 and I drink blue top milk. DD2 drinks oat milk.

Coolaschmoola · 13/04/2018 13:10

bottleofredplease - "Hope that's not too goady Grin"

No not at all! By the third post you were definitely being a total goady fucker though.

HTH next time you are trying to discern levels if goadiness.

Bodicea · 13/04/2018 13:13

Full fat here for us all. It’s more nutrient rich. Fats are good. It’s carbs and sugar that are making us all fat. I do have skimmed in my tea but that’s just because I prefer the taste specially in tea only.

Pinkvoid · 13/04/2018 13:16

Semi skimmed but purely because I hate the taste of full fat and don’t want to buy both.

Ractify · 13/04/2018 13:22

DS (20 months) alternates oat milk and rice milk on his porridge and refuses to drink any type of milk - he is allergic to cow, goat, & soy milks. He has some coconut yoghurt, coconut ice cream or coconut cheese daily, but will only drink water.
I use almond, rice, coconut or oat milk depending on what I'm cooking, but don't just drink it (also allergic to dairy and soy).
OH has skim milk usually.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 13/04/2018 13:25

Dr drinks blue top, dh and I drink red and ds has soya, almond or hazelnut milk.

MollyDaydream · 13/04/2018 13:31

DC1 (skinny) switched to semi skimmed at 6.
DC2 (chunky) at about 3.

snowballsandsunshine · 13/04/2018 13:35

DD (2) has full fat, DH has semi skimmed and I have skimmed so I buy all three.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 13/04/2018 13:35

We all drink semi skimmed here. Used to give the kids full fat when they were under 2.

knottybeams · 13/04/2018 13:38

Blue top here, as the adults are trying to cut %carbs, so DD (3) is still on blue top too. She has it on weetabix and as a drink, DP (41) and I (39) have it in drinks and sauces only anyway. DS (5m) is still on finest boob juice.

Brillopad78 · 13/04/2018 13:39

@Windy1234 are your calves kept with the mother from birth? Or are they removed and bottle fed? I dont buy milk as it makes me sad that newborn calves are removed from their mother as soon as they are born and many male calves are shot at birth. We used soya milk.
