What milk do you give your children?

Just seen on another thread.

Mine had full fat until a few months ago and I swapped to semi skimmed so I wasn't buying 2 milks. And I've been informed by oldest (6) its semi at school.

Should I still be giving them full fat? They're both 50%-ish height and weight, can be taller and slimmer when in growth spurts.

Don't drink it in our house. Don't offer it to DS either and probably never will.

Drinking another species milk strikes me as very odd.

I'm not Vegan

Odd indeed

Why does everyone think it's so normal to drink milk, most of the world doesn't do it. Most of the world are not obese.

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 16:48

I don’t know. I drink it, as do my children and DH. None of us are obese either. Or even overweight.
I don’t think milk consumption can be blamed for the obesity problem.

bottleofredplease · 13/04/2018 16:51

It is interesting how the countries that don't drink milk don't have obesity issues though isn't it? The dairy industry don't want everyone to realise this and continue to tell us it's so important for our children, seem to be okay in those countries where they don't drink it though don't they?

RainbowGlitterFairy · 13/04/2018 16:51

DS(13) and I have full fat, neither of us really drink anything other than milk or water and semi-skimmed milk tastes horrible.

DH has semi skimmed, DD(9) doesn't care which she has.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2018 16:52

I'm obese and don't drink milk. Milk is relatively low fat so how could it be the cause?

Slievenamon · 13/04/2018 16:52

It might be interesting if it were the case, but it is not. Which countries is it that you think don't drink milk, and have no issues with obesity?

bottleofredplease · 13/04/2018 16:53

How do you think the calves get so strong and big so quickly? It's designed for rapid growth of baby cows.

Slievenamon · 13/04/2018 16:54

Its not designed at all Hmm

SoyDora · 13/04/2018 16:55

It would only be interesting if there were no other variables. If these countries had exactly the same diets and lifestyles as us but without the milk, then it would be reasonable to assume that milk caused obesity problems. But that’s not the case.

DwangelaForever · 13/04/2018 16:56

My dd is in semi skimmed, she was a big baby and didn't like the taste of full fat, we switched to semi skimmed after a month of trying full fat and haven't looked back.

tomhazard · 13/04/2018 16:56

Semi for breakfast cereal. They don't really drink it but on the odd occasion they do I give them semi for that too.

BeanCalledPickle · 13/04/2018 16:57

Of course it’s designed for baby cows! It would be a bit weird if it were nutritionally perfect for baby humans and not for baby cows?! Obviously it’s become normal for humans to drink and we have evolved to do so but you can’t possibly think that cows milk is not intended to provide complete nutrition to Baby cows?

Mine have alpro soya milk. We aren’t vegan. They have traces of dairy in other things

AreWeDoingThisNow · 13/04/2018 16:57

If we're doing milk = obesity anecdata I've been a healthy weight (or slightly underweight as a teen) all my life and have always drunk full fat milk, when I went home from uni for hols my dad would buy an extra 6 pints on the weekly shop in anticipation!

QueenofmyPrinces · 13/04/2018 16:58

I watched a really interesting documentary once about the issues raised with having cows milk. It was basically saying the milk is designed to grow calves into cows and that there can be repercussions of humans having that fluid in their system. It spoke quite a lot about fertility issues in men and women and how cows milk may play a role as we are basically ingesting growth hormones and various other hormones that are meant for another species of animal. It was really interesting.

I think you need a dictionary. It is not designed at all, it has no designer. It is naturally occurring. It is the first food of baby cows and it is also perfectly suitable for humans with the lactase persistence gene past toddlerhood.

It is not designed or intended because both of those words are inappropriate for a naturally occurring substance.

Lovesagin · 13/04/2018 17:02

Yea, im pretty sure if it was milk that's the problem it would be getting the same treatment as sugary drinks, fast food etc with awareness campaigns and tax etc

Its odd to you, that's fine. I find 'sheese' and how much water it takes to produce one almond odd.

WannaBeWonderWoman · 13/04/2018 17:02

Organic non homogenised full fat here (Ocado).

Tesco organic homogenised full fat in emergencies.

DS1 drinks loads and is like a whippet.

Have never bought the watered down crap.

WannaBeWonderWoman · 13/04/2018 17:05

Wheat is behind the obesity problems in Western countries IMO not milk.

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 13/04/2018 17:05

Full fat non-homogenised off the farm gate. Tastes amazing.

SoupDragon · 13/04/2018 17:07

Have never bought the watered down crap.

It’s not watered down.

Wheat is behind the obesity problems in Western countries IMO not milk.

Portion size and junk food is more likely to be to blame.

I think eating high calorie, nutritionally poor, food and an inactive lifestyle is the cause of the obesity crisis in western counties. Demonising individual food types only leads to dad diets that are unhealthy.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/04/2018 17:12

Full fat filtered and full fat Lactofree in our house. Full fat, full sugar everything (in moderation). All six of us range between slim and skinny. Kids were breastfed until 18 months or so though.

BeanCalledPickle · 13/04/2018 17:13

Ok designed may not be the best choice of word but it is certainly intended for Baby cows and is nutritionally complete for them. It can be tolerated by humans because of us having developed the ability to digest it but it is certainly not intended for humans. It is intended to grow baby cows into big cows.
