If the council in Windsor wanting to clear homeless out ?

I mean why don't the royal couple open a shelter instead given they are 'humanitarian' ?

Im just not a fan of the institution at all. I don't think it has any place in a modern democracy. The queen has been paid handsomely for a job well done so I'm not sure any special praise is due.

As for tradition, Im afraid it doesn't mean much to me.

nursy1 · 12/04/2018 11:40

She’s a hard working, conscience , grafter

Really? Is being a Queen that hard compared to the life of most? Try getting up before dawn for a 12 hour shift and do it day after day. Nobody to bring you breakfast or lay out your clothes for the day. That’s a hard working graft done by millions and it’s what really contributes to the economy and well being if the U.K.

biscuitraider · 12/04/2018 11:41

I don't think it's the envy of nations. I really don't. I think most nations find them rather like a circus act, an odd curiousity which they like to observe but would hate to have for themselves. Why would anyone envy a country that has as its head of state an unelected "queen". It's absurd and is a reminder of our inglorious bloody past.

Fruitcorner123 · 12/04/2018 11:41

I hope they can get them into shelters for their own sake.

Of course you are right but they should be doing that anyway not just for this.

Laiste · 12/04/2018 11:43

bertrand i agree. Who on earth decided it was a good idea to try to push this agenda of their 'normality' to justify their existence as it stands at the moment? It's a complete shot in the foot IMO.

Oh look at them! So royal and wonderful. Lets all pay to keep them.
Oh look at them! So ... normal you say? ... hang on ..... Confused

@Wdigin2this I would change things by abolishing the monarchy. I'd turn the Crown Estate into a sovereign wealth fund and nationalise the Duchy. I don't really care where the Royal Family goes and lives, or what they do with their lives, not sure that's anyone else's responsibility.

biscuitraider · 12/04/2018 11:43

The idea of the queen being a "hard working grafter" Grin

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 11:45

@biscuitraider Grin I know!

There is always a crazy idea that the more money people have, the more they've grafted. When in reality it's usually the complete opposite and high earners would mostly last about 5 minutes working as a cleaner or a carer or a Gregg's operative.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/04/2018 11:45

Not interested in them or their wedding.

Wdigin2this · 12/04/2018 11:46

Ah that's the rub isn't it, tradition is out of favour, maybe it's because I'm older, that I want to uphold it, and all it stands for! But, I'm fully aware that when the Queen dies, radical change will take place!
Charles (like it or not) will become King, Camilla will be styled Princess Consort and Wills, Harry and their families will be stepping up to the plate, to take on more (mostly boring) duties, in order to prove their worth!
When it comes William's turn, who knows what'll happen, but I doubt I'll be around to see it....or maybe as I'm a bit younger than Charles, I'll be in my bath chair, waving my little Union Jack, as Wills passes regally by!

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:46

The younger royals have had access to the best education that money can buy. They can use that to make their own way like the rest of us.

The80sweregreat · 12/04/2018 11:46

I too think that Meghan will miss her old fairly carefree life - she wont have the attention that Kate has, but it will still be difficult for her to do as she wants and she might find that hard to adjust to , as anyone would if your born to it. To be fair though, Kate has seemed to, but she is a different kind of person i think and dated William for years before they married, so she did have a taste of that lifestyle before they got married so she knew what to expect.
Schools hospitals, places for the people , they can rot, but money needed for palaces and royal homes and all the rest of it, no problem.
no wonder people feel bitter towards them.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/04/2018 11:46

A circus act? Lol

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:49

I think Meghan will have as much attention as Kate if not more. She's a more divisive figure.

nursy1 · 12/04/2018 11:49

If the Royal family were abolished they would still be wealthy and have privileged lives, if they were careful it would last them down the generations. They already seem wise to the tax avoidance, dodgy investments the rest of their class use all the time.
The country would have B Palace, Windsor etc for the tourists. France still has Versailles. I don’t think it would be that much of a loss.

LillianGish · 12/04/2018 11:51

the RF have a choice of palaces, all with chapels, they could have got married in one of those - that's exactly what they are doing. St George's Chapel is within the grounds of Windsor Castle. I tend to agree with Bertrand if we must have a royal family then let's have one. If they want to pretend to be ordinary people we might as well get rid of them.

CaptainCardamom · 12/04/2018 11:53

I agree the royals will never know what it's like to be poor and to have to work to eat. And that causes resentment.

BUT that doesn't mean it's an easy life - easy materially doesn't mean there is no downside. I think it must be horrendous, being so restricted in what you can do, say, wear and be seen as. Being a public figure from birth, criticised for whatever choices you make, and expected to provide an admirable spectacle on all occasions. That is a hard job and the queen has done it well.

Of course it's a bloody weird job and bonkers that it exists at all, but I am sorry for them - yes even given they're not poor.

Laiste · 12/04/2018 11:53

The impression i get is that it is seen as quite unseemly to take a lot of credit or pats on the back for working hard for charitable causes once you're IN the royal family. It's always trotted out how Anne works so hard quietly 'behind the scenes' with no big pats on the back. It's the main positive thing said about her!

Can i see Meghan happy to work hard 'behind the scenes' with few realising how much 'good work' she does? Hmmmm.

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:53

I do like the fact that Meghan comes from an ordinary background and has grafted and "hustled" to get to where she is.

In that sense I much prefer her to Harry's other partners. It's a refreshing move away from that privileged set.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/04/2018 11:54

I wonder why they didn’t try for a big fuss st St Paul’s or the Abbey? Or maybe they did...

EdithWeston · 12/04/2018 11:54

"I'd turn the Crown Estate into a sovereign wealth fund"

So not essentially different from what it is now? Any profits being given to exchequer, getting back sovereign grant to defray the expenses of being head of state. It's a remarkably good deal for public finances.

Or did you mean something else?

pigsDOfly · 12/04/2018 11:54

I really have no interest in the royals and would prefer that the whole system be allowed to die out.

But I do love the way posters come on here and declare that this latest marriage won't last and in a few years, after a couple of kids, they'll be heading for the divorce courts.

I take it the people posting such comments are on extremely intimate terms with at least one of the people getting married in order to be able to make such predictions and to state with such certainty that they are totally unsuited as a couple.

With regard to the Queen being a hard grafter, it's all relative!
She's turned out for thousands of ceremonies, stood up and shook millions of hands, always looked and presented herself immaculately, (who'd want to have to look their party best 24/7). She's travelled (allbeit in luxury) without her husband, or her children, to places all over the world, for more than half a century, representing this country and fostering good relationships. She has a ton of paperwork on her desk, which she deals with every single day, and she puts duty before self at all times!
I know I'm in the minority on this thread, but I value the Queen and the royal tradition!

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:55

We only see the royals on public engagements. We all have to "behave" at work and do a good job.

Behind the scenes it's no secret that they get to let their hair down (and what's more they do so in locations that ordinary Brits can only dream of).
