If the council in Windsor wanting to clear homeless out ?

I mean why don't the royal couple open a shelter instead given they are 'humanitarian' ?

findingmyfeet Fearne Cotton would be barbecued in the fire pit if she turned up. No nonsense about dressing up (well the DC do but that’s different) just drinkin’ and eatin’.

The80sweregreat · 12/04/2018 11:10

True captain - Harry’s outfit and his brother will be thousands too I suppose. I’m no fan but you do make some good points. I’m just outraged at the cost of the security - it is obscene ( even if it was ‘only ‘ a million or whatever the bill is)

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:10

Spending huge amounts of money is distasteful when your sole job is as a figurehead for a country where increasing numbers of people are living on the breadline.

LaurieMarlow · 12/04/2018 11:10

Charles is paying for it from his private income.

Do you mean duchy income? Because that isn't private.

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:13

I love the idea that they have private incomes because they or their ancestors were titans of industry, inventors, etc and have amassed this wealth fair and square through shrewd business deals.

octonaught · 12/04/2018 11:16

MM seems very keen on pushing her humanitarian / feminist agenda. During the Royal Foundation interview, even Harry reminded her that there was a wedding to organise.

I think MM will get a shock at the restrictions of being royal. It may be high profile & a life of luxury, but if she wanted to change the world, she should have snagged a tech billionaire. Harry has made no secret of wanting kids and I think he would be an excellent father. Will Meghan be happy with a traditional wife & mother role; because that’s what she has signed up for

EdithWeston · 12/04/2018 11:17

The Cambridge's wedding cost £24m on security, including open air parade throuch central London and head of state guests, all on a Bank Holiday (which is a major increase in staff costs a time and a half or double), and no perimeter to the building in which the ceremony took place.

If the 'estimates' the tabloids are running with is inflation on top of that, then they're using wrong assumptions.

Smaller event, fewer guests who qualify for state-funded close protection, and shorter/less elaborate carriage ride.

What is the actual source of the £24m+ figure? Quite a lot of the papers 'estimates suggest' and similar wording, but I've yet to see one which says where the estimates come from.

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 11:18

Crikey, some people are over invested in their lives.

biscuitraider · 12/04/2018 11:18

On the whole nobody makes any money out of a royal wedding. If you offset it against lost revenue because of a public holiday it costs the country a fortune, as did Williams wedding. People need to stop fooling themselves that the royals bring in money. Quite the opposite, they cost us an ill afforded fortune.

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 11:20

We'll never really know the true cost of the security. The police overtime bill wil be a fortune between this and the FA Cup.

Wdigin2this · 12/04/2018 11:20

As far as I can work out, the Queen is stumping up for the whole shindig, and yes we pay taxes to keep the royal family, but it's estimated to be less than £1 per capita, per annum!
Considering, the revenue they bring into the country, and how many people make their living via royalty....I think it's a good deal!

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 11:20

@biscuitraider You got my hopes up there about a public holiday but it's on a Saturday, isn't it?

BrendasUmbrella · 12/04/2018 11:22

I don't like that Megan. She makes out she's doing you a favor by allowing you to breath the same air as her

You sound like she's a work colleague you dislike Grin I honestly doubt she spends any part of her day resenting that you get to breathe...

findingmyfeet12 · 12/04/2018 11:23

At £1 per capita per annum it is a good deal if you think it's worth it to perpetuate the idea that a life of privilege funded by a state is a birthright and some people are just born "better".

Wdigin2this · 12/04/2018 11:26

Nike given the choice, I'm sure Harry would have preferred a small intimate wedding, but as Prince Henry of Wales, he doesn't get to have a choice, in this and so many other matters. Being royal doesn't come as easy as it looks.....no matter how many millions in the bank!

biscuitraider · 12/04/2018 11:26

I don't agree they're a good deal. I think the country would make far more out of tourism if they weren't there, as does France. The pound or whatever they cost is no justification for keeping them, that could be put to good use to benefit others rather than one family, and provide worthwhile employment rather than pampering one entitled family.

ParisUSM · 12/04/2018 11:26

Does that £1 a year cover the 66% pay rise the Queen received to pay for Buckingham Palace to be done up?
The sovereign grant is the funding formula under which the Queen normally receives 15% of the annual profit from the crown estate. The trustees recommend she receive 25% for the 10 years the work is taking place and the grant should be returned to 15% when building work is finished in 2027.

In an age where we can't afford anything and everything has to be cut back, this really sticks in my throat.

BertrandRussell · 12/04/2018 11:30

Actually, if we have to have a monarchy, i’d much rather have a proper one, wearing crowns all the time, dripping with diamonds and eating two bites of a roast swan and throwing the rest to the peasants, and driving round in gold coaches pulled by 16 perfectly matched grey horses. This rather tedious attempt to look like any other upper middle class family is just as expensive. ineffective, boring and doesn’t even give us anything pretty to look at.

The80sweregreat · 12/04/2018 11:30

I think that the Queen has done her job well overall , she took the job on when things were a lot different and many more people were ' royalists' i think- but i do see a real sea change when she dies and the monarchy has to move on with a new King in charge and more and more people not happy about the money they cost and the lifestyles they lead. I cant see a revolution as such, but just a general feeling of unease maybe?

nursy1 · 12/04/2018 11:31

I can’t be bothered with it.
I wish them well and all that. They will never have an issue getting a mortgage, they will never have the 9 to 5 stress of work/ life balance, in short they have every chance of having a good marriage. Great! Just don’t feel the need to get over to Windsor and wave me flag.

changemyname1 · 12/04/2018 11:33

I've no interest either and don't see it lasting.

It wont take Meghan long to realise being a Royal Duchess is boring and claustrophobic, bound by traditions, protocols and rituals that make very little sense in the 21st century.

She will soon realise that just being Duchess of ............. without the HRH (because that will go in the divorce) will still open a lot more doors/opportunities that just being Mrs Rachel Engelson or Ms Meghan Markle ever could.

Its a shame as he does seem smitten, her less so.

suzy2b · 12/04/2018 11:33

They can't do right for doing wrong,if they had a small wedding that would be wrong .I am a royalist and will watch it on tv,when Dianna got married I was living abroad I took the day off work to watch , I might think Charles is a dick head, but i'm still a royalist,my mother was absolutely not

Wdigin2this · 12/04/2018 11:33

Finding I just don't see it like that! Being honest now, would you really want the life of the Queen or her immediate family?
We have a royal tradition stretching back centuries, and (I know I'll get flamed for this) it's the envy of many nations, particularly America! The Queen herself is in her nineties, and she is still dedicated to a life, where her duty to the UK comes first, she's a hard working, conscience , grafter, who has put in the effort, as have her immediate family.
Now the hangers on, such as The Kents, yeah, they can go and earn their own crusts, but I support the nuclear roya family wholeheartedly!

nursy1 · 12/04/2018 11:36

Paris
I totally agree with you on money always being found to fund Buckingham Palace renovations ( or J Rees Moggs stately Home come to that).
When hospitals are understaffed and underfunded, school buildings are inadequate not to mention all the rest of the creaking infrastructure in the U.K. it makes me feel a bit pissed off to say the least. I’d be happy to give another £5 a month to fix that!

Wdigin2this · 12/04/2018 11:37

Paris yes I'm pretty sure it will revert!
So, to all the anti royalist, what would you prefer in its its place, how would you change things, and what would you have the royal family do/go/live?
