Because I would rather be overdressed?

We are having our families photos done professionally this weekend. I have already picked out a dress to wear. But straight after the photos finish we are going to a friend's get together about 5 minutes away. According to dh I am going to look ridiculous because I will be dressed up and nobody else will be. AIBU to not give a shit? I was once massively underdressed for something and spent the entire night hiding in shame

Gorgeous dress, and surely not that dressy

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 11/04/2018 20:03

It's a beautiful dress OP but I think if everyone else was in jeans and t-shirts I would probably feel pretty out of place, not to mention cold, in something like that. Of course YANBU to wear what you like but I would just take some jeans and a top with me to the photoshoot and use their bathroom to change before leaving.

redfragglebiker · 11/04/2018 20:05

Could you perhaps take a denim/casual jacket and some more casual shoes to dress it down a bit afterwards? Could be a good compromise (says the girl who throws on converse and a maroon biker jacket with summer floral tea dresses)!

TheNoodlesIncident · 11/04/2018 20:06

If you're wearing that, your DH and DS will have to be similarly smart, won't they? It will look odd if you're not equal in terms of levels of smartness imo. It doesn't matter afterwards, your friends won't care and it won't matter then.

Dress is lovely btw

italiancortado · 11/04/2018 20:10

Jeans and shirts are totally fine for your DH and DS to wear while you wear the dress!

I wouldn't worry about being overdressed, it's no ball gown, just a summery piece, I think you will be fine

SmileyBird · 11/04/2018 20:13

Stick a cardi on

Serialweightwatcher · 11/04/2018 20:16

You could wear a pair of leggings under it with flats for after and put a cardi on as someone else said

Mamabear1475 · 11/04/2018 20:16

They both will be wearing black jeans and a shirt so it should look smart, they just won't wear the formal black trousers, both as stubborn as each other Grin
At least I hope

I would take a cardi and just tell people where I'd been beforehand.

Sparklynails7 · 11/04/2018 20:17

If you are so bothered about being "overdressed" then why don't you leave a spare change of clothes in the car?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 11/04/2018 20:19

Even in black jeans the photo is going to look really mismatched Confused

Juells · 11/04/2018 20:22

Why would it? The dress isn't a ballgown.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 11/04/2018 20:25

If the friends are good ones I wouldn't give it a thought. I would probably bring a cardigan though, given the ever miserable weather.

pandorawithtreaclecolouredhair · 11/04/2018 20:25

Dress it down with Converse, and it will be stylish and suit both occasions.

Graduate223 · 11/04/2018 20:27

Don’t people dress up for parties anymore? I do and I can’t see why it would matter if you are overdressed. You will stand out in a good way.

Graduate223 · 11/04/2018 20:28

Don’t put converse or leggings with it! That would look hideous. Don’t feel you have to change.

Mamabear1475 · 11/04/2018 20:31

I'm not bothered about being overdressed. That's why I said I don't give a shit

OP posts:
LipstickHandbagCoffee · 11/04/2018 20:33

That’s a v pretty occasion dress,so if they rest family wear jeans yes you’ll look odd
Why can’t you put on jeans & shirt for photoshoot, and afterward change into dress and nice shoes keep same hair, make up
Your dp then take your jeans & t-shirt home with him and you change

kaytee87 · 11/04/2018 20:36

The photo is going to look weird if they're wearing jeans.
If everyone else at the party will be very casual then I'd probably bring a change of clothes or wear a more casual dress in the first place to match the rest of your family if they're in jeans.

mummmy2017 · 11/04/2018 20:37

Put jeans and shirt in a bag.. Change if you need too...

RoboticSealpup · 11/04/2018 20:41

You're going to be cold...

Bluelady · 11/04/2018 20:44

It's not that dressy, can't see the problem personally.

Mamabear1475 · 11/04/2018 20:48

I should never have asked on mumsnet. Now I don't want to wear it to the photo shoot if I'm going to look stupid next to dh and ds Sad

Dress is fine, nit too dressy at all. However black jeans won’t look good next to it. Can’t they wear proper trousers? Grey?

gamerchick · 11/04/2018 20:56

It’s a beautiful dress and it looks good on you. Life is far too short not to feel good in our clothes. Wear the dress and maybe take something to cover your shoulders for later on, just to keep you warm.

Wear it, you’ll feel amazing!
