To ask if you've heard of a potato scallop

When I was a teenager I'd quite often buy a potato scallop for 20p from the chippy on the walk home from swimming. It was a slice of battered potato and was delicious. Where I live now no one has heard of them. Have you and if yes where do you live? :)

Yorkshire here, and scallop and chips was a regular order in our local chippy. Fried Potato slice served with fried potato chips - yum!!

PyongyangKipperbang · 16/04/2018 16:50

Spam Fritters are dirty and delicious!

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 21/01/2019 05:32

Kent girl born and bred and no stranger to the fish and chip shop although we don’t really have a regular or weekly ‘chippy tea’ culture like oop north.

Never heard of a battered potato scallop.

Scalloped potatoes as a baked dish For the table, I have heard of. They seem exactly the same as Dauphinoise potatoes to me. Why they are called scalloped instead of sliced is anyone’s guess. Confused

SD1978 · 21/01/2019 05:33

Potato cake. In Aus and that's the name of them round these parts. There's a divide on what you call them, determines where you're from!

TheSerenDipitY · 21/01/2019 05:37

we have them here in nz too,
potato fritter/pattie , which is a battered slice of potato and then deep fried
we also have scalloped potatoes, which is a potato bake, thinly sliced potatoes with onions, some cheese, cream, stock and seasonings and then tosses in an oven until golden on top and so good ( sometimes also called potato gratin )

KirstyAllsoppsFatterTwin · 21/01/2019 05:40

We used to have Spam fritters regularly for school dinners. My heart sank whenever I saw those ahead of me in the serving line. Bleugh. Nasty. 🤢 I was the weird kid that always picked the pilchard salad and loved a big pile of cabbage and gravy.

Why on earth would anyone order a big lump of potato to go with their chips?Confused Even as a greedy child I think I was probably too sophisticated to se the point of this. 😂

bellinisurge · 21/01/2019 05:44

Manchester area. Deliciousness in potato form.

cricketmum84 · 21/01/2019 06:06

All chippys do scallops up here in Yorkshire. A scallop sandwich is amazing, like a chip butty but without random chips falling out 😂

PBobs · 21/01/2019 06:10

Love potato fritters - only ever had them in Australia and NZ and that's what they call them.

CupoBlood · 21/01/2019 06:24

@InsomniacAnonymous yes my mum used to make that

Fritters here and one of my favs. Never noticed a chippy not selling them.

irnbruforlife · 21/01/2019 06:33

Fritter here in Scotland. They used to be 5p each when I was growing up. You could get a fritter roll for 30p. I don't think you can get a fritter for 30p nowadays 🤣

LadyChatterlysLoofah · 21/01/2019 06:41

Fritters in NE. Never seen in a chip shop, but was a regular home cooked treat growing up. Loved them, may have a go myself!

Gotstuckwiththisname · 21/01/2019 06:44

Yep I've heard of a scallop. Much nicer than chips! DM used to get cod roe and a scallop from the chippy whenever we went.

JenniferJareau · 21/01/2019 06:47

Never heard of it.

tryinganewname · 21/01/2019 06:47

Yep - Yorkshire.

My favourite thing to get from the chippy! In a breadcake with chips, mushy peas and alllll the vinegar.

cuspish · 21/01/2019 06:54

I grew up in coastal Lincolnshire, and a scallop was two thick slices of potato with a thin slice of fish between them battered. Always considered abit posh

PenelopeFlintstone · 21/01/2019 06:56

I am in western NSW and they're called scallops here.

Mayrhofen · 21/01/2019 07:01

Yes I’m from Yorkshire, you can buy these at the chippy and have been able to since I was a child (I’m 53).

UrsulaPandress · 21/01/2019 07:03

What a weird thread to resurrect.

sandgrown · 21/01/2019 07:07

My mum used to make amazing Yorkshire fish cakes which were two slices of potato with fish in the middle then battered. They did not have much money so it made the fish go further and they were delicious!

tillytrotter1 · 21/01/2019 07:08

Delicious in a teacake with loads of salt and vinegar

Teacake, another item that varies regionally! I recall being offered a teacake with ham on by my future MIL and being very puzzled, where I was from, t'other side of the Pennines, a teacake was sweet with fruit, what she was offering was a bread cake/barm cake

Gigglebrain · 21/01/2019 07:13

YES! They were delicious, I've not seen one for years.

TheSubtleKnifeAndFork · 21/01/2019 07:25

We don't have these where I live, which is quite upsetting as they sound delicious.

I used to live in Cumbria and you could get a big ball of deep fried mashed potato (with cheese and onion mixed in) - I can't remember what they were called, but by God I miss them!

namechangechanger · 21/01/2019 07:27

Yeah used to get them for 12p in North Wales. Haven't noticed them on menus for ages though Shock

HavelockVetinari · 21/01/2019 07:28

Manchester here, they still do potato scallops! I wouldn't eat one nowadays though cos callories.
