This is an attempt to intimidate the innocent family. Flowers should be removed - isn’t it littering?

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 11:44

it’s inaccurate to call the flower taker-downers vigilantes

Thats what they call themselves, so tell them that.

lostjanni · 11/04/2018 11:52

To the posters saying i wanted to give medals, get some glasses and read.
I said that the criminal is getting a tribute / shrine outside the elderly persons house, so why can't a tribute be put outside the travellers camp?
Why, because that would be insensitive, provacative, and cruel. So whyshould they have a shrine outside the other victims house, when he didn't die there. It's like standing outside the travellers camp, with flowers saying such a shame someone was violently robbed lets put flowers down here to remember that. Guess what there would be a public outrage at that, so there should be a public outrage at flowers being outside the mans house.

TSSDNCOP · 11/04/2018 11:52

Down you referred to him as a vigilante. So I’m telling you you’re wrong. So is he if that’s what he’s calling himself.

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 11:53

Down you referred to him as a vigilante. So I’m telling you you’re wrong. So is he if that’s what he’s calling himself

Yes, as he called himself, so why wouldn't I use his own description for him? He's a trouble maker trying to stir up this whole mess.

justanothercreditissue · 11/04/2018 11:57

This whole story is awful. I don't think the homeowner did anything wrong - he was defending himself. But a young man died. And his family will be grief stricken. They might well be a rough criminal family but it is still s tragedy for all those involved.

TSSDNCOP · 11/04/2018 11:58

Because as you now know, it’s inaccurate.

Neither the friends of the dead career criminal nor the flower taker downers are helping to negate a ridiculous situation.

TSSDNCOP · 11/04/2018 12:00

Absolutely Just

Let’s hope the dead career criminal is buried soon so there’s a proper place for his friends to grieve and lay flowers.

I think a problem is that often, due to media reporting or sensationalist TV programmes like MBFGW, there are misunderstandings about the history and classification of what a 'traveller' actually is.
Irish Travellers are ethnically Irish and are not 'Gypsies', though they did have an itinerant lifestyle in Ireland
'Romany' on the other hand is quite an old word used in England for Gypsies who have been in this country for hundreds of years. These people are descended from ethnic Gypsies, though their ancestry is often very mixed between Gypsy and English people. These are the people some us will remember who called at the house to mend pots and pans or to perhaps collect scrap iron or sell pegs. Attend old horse fairs or who would tell your fortune at the seaside. But many of them also settled into housing and became more integrated over the years. I know Romany descended people who are teachers and other professionals.
My point is that being a 'traveller', of whatever kind, is now a lifestyle choice and often does not bare any relation to how travellers were in the past

I might add that English Romany and Irish Travellers do not always get along with each other.

HabituallyOptimistic · 11/04/2018 12:01

I'm sorry if this has already been said, read most of the thread but not all. Am I the only person that thinks that the media is hugely irresponsible showing the face of the man removing the flowers. Are they not putting that man at risk now from reprisals?

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 12:04

Alpine, will you stop trying to educate everyone when you are wrong. They are travellers, they have said so, and everyone who lives there already knows so. They are not Romany. Nobody is confused here except you.

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 12:05

Am I the only person that thinks that the media is hugely irresponsible showing the face of the man removing the flowers. Are they not putting that man at risk now from reprisals?

He videod himself doing it and gave it to the media, so no, I don't think they are irresponsible. He is though.

Springnowplease · 11/04/2018 12:06

Irish travellers used to be known as Irish tinkers. They came over for the summer and travelled about collecting scrap and sharpening knives, lawnmowers and mending pots and pans.

Now many have settled here.

TSSDNCOP · 11/04/2018 12:07

Alpine you’re confusing me with someone that actually cares about the background of the dead career criminal. I don’t.

I do agree with the OP that leaving flowers where they are being left in the obvious form of a statement by his friends is offensive.

Alpineflowers · 11/04/2018 12:07

They are Romany, sure as eggs are eggs. I wish they weren't, please believe me when I say that, but they are

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 12:08

Tinkers: (dated, chiefly Britain and Ireland, offensive) A member of the Irish Traveller community

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 12:09

Sure. Everyone else is wrong, including themselves, and you are wrong. Hmm

DownWithThatSortofTing · 11/04/2018 12:09

Right

stitchglitched · 11/04/2018 12:10

There are other individuals removing them too, who aren't filming themselves but have been photographed.

stitchglitched · 11/04/2018 12:11

I thought it was pretty clear that they are Irish Catholic?

Mydoghatesthebath · 11/04/2018 12:12

patronising mysogyny so only women can be hysterical. Oh dear spectacular own goal there.

Alpineflowers · 11/04/2018 12:13

Please go on YouTube and search
'Romany Gypsies in Canterbury Kent 1939'
or
'Lee Gap Fair Folk in the 1960's'
Who do you think those people in the film footage are please?
If you look further back in the thread you will see other posters who are saying the same thing as me

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 11/04/2018 12:14

Course his family will be grief striken after all there was only meant to be 2 victims in this.. The home owner and his wife. I doubt any thought wouldve been given to how they'd feel after had things gone to plan. Unfortunately for them it didn't turn out that way and so a family grieve.

Don't agree with the flower shrine however especially if treats have actually been made towards the home owner involved. Some may be meant well.. Others probably less so. Other places flowers can be left.

My neighbour caught someone trying to break into their house. Didn't manage but she has heart problems and cause of that ended up in hospital which couldve ended worse. I doubt any consideration or any thought was given towards her which is why hard to synphaise with the burglar in this case. Only a matter of time before broke into the wrong house.

Springnowplease · 11/04/2018 12:14

Did you miss where I said "used to be known as"? You really would start and argument in an empty room, wouldn't you?

Sad.

Alpineflowers · 11/04/2018 12:17

stitchglitched-I thought it was pretty clear that they are Irish Catholic?

Why did you think that?
